Constituent Says Corruption ‘Regular Practice’ in Charlie Rangel’s District

Not like there’s any risk he could be voted out of office:

The charges against the 80-year-old Democrat include allegations he traded favors for donations to a program he founded at City College of New York, improperly obtained a rent- stabilized apartment and failed to report income from a Caribbean vacation home.
“In Harlem, he’s not going to be judged on that; that’s a regular practice here,” said Jack Broughton, 38, as he sold T- shirts from a sidewalk table on 125th Street.
Voters will remember how Rangel helped them, Broughton said. “My sister was facing eviction with three kids, and his office made one phone call and got her a place she’s been living at for 15 years,” he said.

The spirit of Tammany Hall lives on.

well, maybe he helped a few people in his district, but HELLO: the rest of the nation sees a man who’s abusing his position and swindling money. Bottom Line. He’s crooked. Like so many others. And like so many others, they need to go.

Is it so hard to help his constituents and NOT feel entitled to skim a little off the top, or take an unethical favor?

Or is he just “helping” these constituents to muddy the waters over his unethical activities?

Most of the people who’ve stayed in office for long periods of time did it mainly with constituent service. Got a problem with the federal government? Call your Senator or Representative.

In South Carolina to this day it is hard to find a person who wasn’t either helped themselves, or a family member helped, by either Strom Thurmond or Fritz Hollings, and many can say “Both.”

Now, unless the eviction was from federally-administered housing, Rangel’s influence may have been improperly received, but you can see the residual effect when some street vendor is still grateful for something done for his sister 15 years ago.

Oh, and I’m not at all shocked that corruption is a regular practice in Harlem. They’re probably inspired by Washington, DC.
