Stunning

Last week’s National Press Club press conference by awesome conservatives who happen to be black was all over the blogs. Read the follow up, though.

The press conference revealed an extraordinary truth. My brother who is conservative brought my 83-year-old dad, who’s a staunch Obama supporter, to the press conference. My dad admitted to my brother that the content of the speeches was indisputable. However, the emotional scars from the humiliating racism he endured in his youth are so deep, he could never forsake America’s first black president. Dad said just thinking about the humiliation he suffered in his youth still brings tears to his eyes after all these years.
Dad’s admission opened my eyes. It explains how he, a committed Christian, could support a president whose policies and attitudes border on being anti-Christian. Dad’s loyalty to President Obama is solely emotional, the realization of an unimaginable, impossible dream. Only through prayer and God’s miracle working power will my dad and many black seniors’ hearts be healed enabling them to truly forgive America for her sins of the past.

We can all rejoice in the fact that a man who happens to be black is our President, irrespective of our degree of agreement with, well, anything else about the fellow.

Christianity is about forgiving, as we’ve been forgiven by Christ. Furthermore, my in-country relatives at the time fought for the Union, FWIW. Cue the Keb’Mo’:

. . .I have no shame,
And I have no blame–Oh!
It’s time for us to be moving on.

I don’t buy it. Any black person under the age of about 45 has been treated with kid gloves their entire lives. Any black person under the age of about 65 their entire adult lives. Racism does not explain black behavior or political loyalties.

    @Evan,
No, really: we have a Constitution, held an election, and this was the result.
Is this such an arrogant ‘speaking for all of us’ claim, as you seem to imply?

Thinking about it a little further, and knowing how my own grandmother is about black people, I don’t doubt that that old man was truly humiliated by racist behavior. That’s so not what I meant that I had to come back and clarify.

My point is that if having a black man, any black man at all, in office is so important that the old man is willing to see a nation destroyed and the God he supposedly serves subverted, then race has become religion for him. Not at all to say that I don’t think that he has been affected by white racism, but black identity trumps everything for him. That’s racism, isn’t it?

Until the “old guard” dies out, there is almost no potential for a color-blind society.

Not hoping for Al and Jessee and Louis to die, for sure, but, the country will be better off when they do.

so let me get this straight … if my father was killed by someone of the “other” color its understandable for me to harbor racist views about every person of that other color ?

Or is it only ok for me to hold rasict feelings if I was directly effected by racists ?

I’m confused, I thought assuming that the behvior of some members of a race applied to all members of that race was actually kind of racist …

Wait … Oh, I understand it now … it turns out I may actually be a racist (and a chauvinist) but I “don’t realize it” because my behavior is so “ingrained” that I can’t see my own inherent racism and chauvinism …

Ah, its so much easier to let my betters explain to me how I think and act than to actually be aware of and responsible for what I do … thats the ticket …

It’s funny how this blog has it both ways–it can come out foursquare for revolt, cite the erosion of our Constitutional liberties and the effective inoperability of the founding, quote the magnificent Codevilla essay . . . and then issue pat liberal nyah nyahs when talking around–surprise!–the feelings and esteem of a protected victim group.

Do we have a Constitution or don’t we? Maybe stake out a basic position on that point before making your journalism your career. Not that it will stop you.

And Smitty, the issue isn’t that he’s elected (in a distorted post-American mass democracy, which appears to you to be a Constutional setting). It’s that, according to you, we’re all rejoicing, and doing so because he’s black. It’s there, in your post. You put it there. Not me.

Cindy, and Joe, good comments. I attend a predominantly black Baptist church. They are a Bible believing, teaching, Evangelical church.
However, the past is still seared in the older members souls. They voted for O-bah-muhh, and will support him come what may. Most believe attacks on the President’s policies are attacks on the Black ‘race’ in it’s entirety. This from a church that knows full well Galations 3:28. I just hope O-bah-muhh doesn’t ruin America’s chances of ever electing a Black Conservative President.

the notion that BO is subverting Christianity and destroying the country is nothing more than a Conservative talking point, i.e. a political tactic.
I wouldn’t accuse BO of subverting Christianity to any greater degree than anyone else in American society, but that’s really more of a cultural than political observation.
Christianity is as subverted as it allows.

it may be a cultural observation, true. But not unlike other Conservative social issues, it is used by politicians and pundits alike as a political tactic.
My point about subversion of religion is that it is so easy to use as fodder. JFK’s Catholicism was used against him in similar ways. The problem is that the poisonous “divide and conquer” tactics as per religion are doing devisive , which is counter to the purpose of said religion.

Perhaps when you actually accomplish something in life( and I would start with punctuation if I were you) then you would get my serious consideration.
