Because liberals hold a patent on Civility™ they are the sole arbiters of who is or is not in violation:

Andrew Brietbart’s ad hominem attack on Van Jones in The Daily Caller — right down to calling him a “commie punk” and “a cop killer-supporting, racist, demagogic freak” — violates the tenets of debate and civil discourse we have strived for since the day we launched. As a result, [Huffington Post] will no longer feature his posts on the front page.

Dave Weigel notes (a) Breitbart helped develop HuffPo in 2005, (b) the “ad hominem attack” was not posted at HuffPo, and (c) if such remarks in other forums are disqualifying for front-page status at HuffPo, “Boy, good thing Breitbart doesn’t have an army of contributors who can comb HuffPo authors’ published and spoken work to see if they’ve done that.”

In other words: We can fact-check your ass.

UPDATE: Wow, that was quick: HuffPo contributors Ed Schultz and Jason Linkins both have a history of “ad hominem attacks.”

This is off topic, but indulge me.

    http://althouse.blogspot.com/2011/03/man-should-never-wear-shorts-in-city.html

Althouse had Tom Ford’s five rules for men:

    1. You should put on the best version of yourself when you go out in the world because that is a show of respect to the other people around you.

    2. A gentleman today has to work. People who do not work are so boring and are usually bored. You have to be passionate, you have to be engaged and you have to be contributing to the world.

    3. Manners are very important and actually knowing when things are appropriate. I always open doors for women, I carry their coat, I make sure that they’re walking on the inside of the street. Stand up when people arrive at and leave the dinner table.

    4. Don’t be pretentious or racist or sexist or judge people by their background.

    5. A man should never wear shorts in the city. Flip-flops and shorts in the city are never appropriate. Shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach.

I think that old school advice makes a lot of sense. I have certainly violated #1, #2 (I try to do this, but sometimes I forget), and #5. I once went shopping at the supermarket in pajamas, a bathrobe, and slippers and completely horrified by wife (who only saw me when I came back with the groceries).

But I think that HuffPuff may have just violated #4 with Brietbart. If HuffPuff had a legitmate beef with Breitbart (which over Van Jones I do not think it has) it should handle it in a civil and polite manner.

And I think when you are in NOLA, you should get a pass on shorts.

I was following this story over at the DC. I’m wondering what Breitbart’s plan (I’m assuming he didn’t just lose it) is. After HuffPo refused to acquiesce to the Color of Change demands which must have been hard for HuffPo Breitbart must have known they’d take the first excuse they got. Even though the “ad hominem” occurred in another venue Breitbart had to foresee the results.
The unashamedly partisan (even if they deny it) news and opinion outlets are enlisting antagonists and clearing the decks for action in preparation for 2012. If one thinks about it, all the feigned and genuine calls for civility had to presage it’s utter abolition. Can’t come soon enough for me.
Hot and cold running vitriolic rhetoric in every room please.

How much civility can we reasonably expect from HuffPo, the only major blog to call for the assassination of George Bush?
