Pakistan: Friend or Foe?

In the wake of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza issues a threat:

“Pakistan reserves the right to retaliate with full force. No one should underestimate the resolve and capability of our nation and armed forces to defend our sacred homeland,” Gilani said.

However, the U.K. Guardian reports that Pakistan agreed 10 years ago that the U.S. would be permitted to stage such a raid if bin Laden were located in their country. (Via Memeorandum.)

However, former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf denies that any such deal ever existed:

The answer to your question is “both.” And it is not much of a secret deal if people talk about it, is it?

    Pakistan is a complex place.

Lot of people in the West do not understand the region.

I find Pundita blog has one of the best coverage about Pakistan.

One problem in talking or thinking about Pakistan is the terms used in the discussion. References such as the Government of Pakistan or the Army or the ISI imply unified entities that simply are not. The notion that our mutual national interests are the same are also false. The single most important foreign policy goal of Pakistan is annexing the Kashmir region from India. The various terrorist attacks that occur within Pakistan are done at the behest of ISI and or Pak Army elements. The Pakistani political leadership serves at the sufferance of the Military and have no independent base of power significant enough to counter the Military or Intelligence forces.

Get Machiavellian on them. Pull out, wreck the bridges and such on the way out, hand their boodle over to the EEEEE-vil Indians (so that they can ‘secure the Kashmir’), and stand back while the place bursts into flame. Wait for the riots to hit their peak, nuke the Waziristan hideouts of the Vaunted Pak Nuke Force.

The problem with using nukes in the AfPak area is fallout would drift over India. As my son pointed out this could disrupt tech support.

And now they’re threatening to hand over the tail of the downed helicopter to the Chinese. If only we had fast, pointy flying explosive thingies that could land on whatever storage hut has the tail section in it.

    If only.

Or get really friendly the Indians. POINTEDLY friendly.

The Paks might get the message.

    MIGHT.
