I … See … Crazy People

One of the amazing things about the whole debt-ceiling episode is how it has caused liberals to say stuff even crazier than the crazy stuff they usually say. Michael Lind at Salon:

The debt ceiling crisis is the latest case in which the radical right in the South has held America hostage until its demands are met. Presidents Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln refused to appease the Southern fanatics. Unfortunately, President Obama and the Democrats in Congress chose not to follow their example and instead gave in. In doing so, they have encouraged the neo-Confederate minority in Congress to find yet another opportunity in the near future to extort concessions from America’s majority by sabotaging America’s government.

That’s some 180-proof crazy. But when it comes to pure high-octane crazy, nobody beats Amanda Marcotte:

Now it’s time to reflect on how our country has gone so far off track that we can’t even handle the basic responsibility of keeping the country from plunging into a manufactured crisis that nearly led to economic collapse. There are multiple causes, but one that hasn’t been discussed much is abortion.
Yes, abortion. Or, more specifically, the sustained sex panic that has been going on in this country since the sixties and seventies, when the sexual revolution occurred and women secured their reproductive rights. . . . [I]t’s sex panic that helped create the modern right-wing populist, and it’s the modern right-wing populist that created the current crisis. . . .
The genius of conservative leadership was that they were able to take all this anger about sexual freedom and desegregation and put the blame on two enemies: Democrats and the federal government.

So it’s neo-Confederates and/or “sex panic” that cause people to, uh . . . . Wait, what are we talking about? The federal debt.

The only way to exempt yourself from these bizarre accusations is to support infinite deficit spending. Otherwise, you’re like a giant inkblot in a Rorshach test, onto which Michael Lind and Amanda Marcotte will project their paranoid fears. You can’t simply debate fiscal policy with people like Lind and Marcotte, because they are endowed with the Magical Mind-Reading Power of Liberalism, which enables them to discern that you’re really a sex-panicked neo-Confederate upset about desegregation and “reproductive rights.”

It’s like having Charles Manson call you a psychotic.

UPDATE: Here’s a classic. On Sunday morning, Marcotte proclaimed to the world that “sex panic” explained the debt-ceiling dispute. But Tuesday, once she’d seen Lind’s neo-Confederate theory, she suddenly decided his theory was exactly right:

Southern whites have disproportionately tried to fuck up everything great about this country, all because of their racial resentments and backasswards views on gender . . .

Notice that “backasswards views on gender” now emerge as a uniquely regional trait of the South, as Marcotte evidently hopes to engraft her “sex panic” theory onto Lind’s Dixiefied theory. But either way, it’s the same thing: If you don’t agree with liberals, it can only be because there’s something wrong with you.

Your disagreement therefore licenses liberals to diagnose your disorder, a prerogative to which they are entitled, because they are your intellectual and moral superiors. And I remind you that this habit — diagnosing dissent as pathological — has been a signature trope of liberalism for more than half a century: Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

Sex panic? Are we sure Marcotte isn’t blogging from a padded cell? When I worked in group homes, I handed out prn tranquilizers for far saner theories than that one.

But it comes down to the left believe with all their heart and soul that they are 100% right on every issue (not 80%, not 90% but 100%)

Therefore with this starting premise anyone opposed to the issues is insane or driven by some “other” reason like racist, sexism, neo-confederalism  or sexual repression or something.

But look deeper why this is so dangerous and why the left is so dangerous. Throughout history when political movements declare the opposition 100% wrong, they then become evil and once they are declared evil you are ACTUALLY doing good to eliminate them.

Don’t believe me look at all the recent examples of eviro-wackos wanting global warming deniers locked up or “branded” for their heresy.

Part of this is they are struggling to find a saleable negative meme to hang on us. Perhaps even they could see the irony of being accused of terrorism by people who refuse to call actual terrorists, terrorists.

I looked at the source of the spiffy chart and graph for the Salon piece and it’s a list of House reps by state (from CNN) showing which reps are considered Tea Party caucus. So Salon just added up the reps from each state and, voilà, the complete demographics of the Tea Party nationwide! All I can conclude is that Salon author Michael Lind went to public schools. He did do a nice job presenting the graphics, though. Almost makes them seem legit. Sigh.

The nerve of the minority, trying to extract concessions from the majority!

It’s as if these liberals have no idea how the Constitution is supposed to work, and the concern the founding fathers had to prevent mob rule by a runaway majority. I guess that’s asking too much — the document is, like, a hundred years old or something.

    Even crazier:

When the Republicans are in charge, with an annual deficit less than 10% of Obama’s, the deficit is evil and irresponsible, and raising the debt ceiling is a “failure of leadership.”

…and the media props up the lunatics who utter these crazy contradictions with a straight face.

Hey, is there any such thing as bad publicity. If Democrats don’t watch out, they might say this stuff and a lot of people might say, hell these sound like my kind of people. I think most Democrats haven’t really caught on yet that most people deep down don’t really like the damn government.

Hood grenade and pistol killer of thirteen US soldiers a terrrorist. With the rabid left-wing moonbats, lexicographers and grammarians are useless—these committed lunatics are living in brains as deranged as Marcotte’s, who’s thrown me off two of her nanny-statist blogsites for actually making sense amidst the bedlam of her NOW d-bag chug-a-luggers…!!!

Try to read Lind’s piece then, Adobe.  you know, where he points out that over 60% of the Tea party caucus is from the Deep South.  Much like the good ol’ days of the 50’s when Southern Segregationist Democrats like Russell and Thurmond could count on the occasional support from Midwestern Republicans (like my Senators), the now Southern Republican Tea Partiers can count on Bachmann and 11 whole other Midwesterners.

Still, I see hoe you could miss that point, since you decided reading the linked essay was too much work

Since his piece is ABOUT the number of Tea PArty Reps from the Deep South, it would seem his methodology is rock solid.  If he were to claim that 60% of Tea party members are FROM the former CSA, you might have a beef.

As this long ago NYTimes poll on Tea Partiers pointed out, there are 18% of them, they are overwhelmingly Republican, male, and over 45.  It’s just a re-branding of the GOP base and that base is Southern.

I read the nitwits piece and linked it in my comment in the preceding post. It’s not surprising that after the failure of your peoples efforts stigmatize the conservative movement as terrorists that your pathetic efforts to find villainy in freedom has returned full circle. As usual Bolshevism assumes that the average American is too stupid to remember that y’all have already tried accusing us of raaaaacism, to little effect. But go ahead and keep trying to manufacture some new calumny. After all you haven’t tried hanging the Lindbergh kidnapping on us. Oh I know you folks haven’t accused us of giving smallpox infected blankets to the poor yet either.

“…all because of their racial resentments and backasswards views on gender….”

    What exactly does that mean?

    Does she mean that whatever she thinks southern white men believe about women is actually true about men, for example, that men should be barefoot and pregnant;

or does she mean that if southern white men think women should be barefoot and pregnant, then women should never be barefoot and pregnant?

And if so, how does that affect what I thought was the central tenet of feminism, that a woman’s choices should be maximized – here, she is trying to eliminate a woman’s choice to be barefoot and pregnant?

And, further to the point, if she thinks that southern white men expect to subjugate racial minorities by destroying the country, why is it that southern white men disproportionately protect the country by serving in the military?

I am trying to see her logic, but I can’t understand.  Perhaps I should be happy about that.
