Kaitlyn Hunt’s Lawyer, Having Failed Her Client, Now Scapegoats the Prosecution

Kaitlyn Hunt: Now she’s where guilty perverts belong.

Anyone who watched Tuesday’s hearing in the Kaitlyn Hunt case knows two things: “Free Kate” is guilty as hell, and her lawyer is an idiot.

Let’s admit that even a good lawyer would have difficulty representing a client as guilty as Kaitlyn Hunt. Bad cases require bad arguments, and if the guilty client insists on fighting the case all the way to trial, any attorney who accepts the fee is going to be obliged to look like an incompetent idiot from time to time. But read this statement issued by Kaitlyn Hunt’s lawyer today and see if you can spot a certain — what shall we call it? — ironic lack of self-awareness:

Translation: “My perverted client is guilty as hell, and it’s so unfair of prosecutors to keep pointing out what a guilty pervert she is!”

SHE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE PLEA BARGAIN!

Calculated or not, it appears to be part and parcel with an abusive relationship.

Miss Hunt doesn’t strike me as being foresightful enough to plan that – I suspect it started “innocently” enough to be able to pass information back and forth, and escalated as nobody caught on into far more.

The whole transcript would be very interesting, especially as it revolved around public events, prosecutorial disclosures, and such – to see how much spin control/intelligence was sought out.

They have assets? Some of them probably have lacerated sphincters, others have collections of antibiotic resistant microbes. A few have herpes sores in the facial area. Many have rare jail ink collections. I guess you could call those assets, but I don’t think the Smiths would want them.

I share your concern. Everything else aside, the way this case has played out, there will no doubt be a chilling effect on other parents who wish to seek legal help for children who become caught up in these situations. Part of the long term plan, I think. (BTW, you’re doing yeoman’s work on this. Well done.)

Many have homes and jobs. Wages can be garnished. These people need to be taught a lesson or other parents will be dissuaded from reporting crimes like this. Which, by the way, is another reason we have statutory rape laws – to encourage people to report these crimes instead of hiding them.

Yes, I think it was just a way for Kate Hunt to flout the law and keep tabs on the victim – make sure she’s not cooperating, etc. But now, I really do think they’re going to rip the victim’s family to shreds, and whatever info they release on the victim, including sex videos, will just be collateral damage. (And of course, I’m just outright guessing about videos or any similar material from the victim to Kate Hunt, but the guess is based on the concept that you don’t send that stuff where it’s not welcomed and reciprocated. Which *does not* mean I’m saying the victim deserves to be doxxed or is less of a victim… just that 14 year olds are idiots without any real concept of long-term consequences, and when they want someone’s approval, at that age they go far to get it.)

“by keeping it, she has enabled Miss Hunt to commit further crimes”

This is why we have such things as statutory rape laws.

But “Enablement” isn’t the issue here. The Hunts – both Miss and Mrs were aware of – and utilized – the contact to violate court orders and damage the victim.

Even if “she was asking for it” and “Looked 18!” – they, _at the very least, after the arrest_, knew better, and knew it was wrong.

Sure, if they’re caught at it. But they don’t have much history of obeying the law just because they’re worried they’ll get caught breaking it. Look at the dad, a disgraced cop who intimidated a witness. And now Kelley Hunt Smith and Kate Hunt both tried to get the victim to destroy evidence and lie to prosecutors. They just never seem to expect to get caught, and if caught, never seem to expect actual consequences.

  23. SPQR9

The Hunt family strategy of going for big public outcry is usually a loser argument. Sure, prosecutor offices are political but its really rare for them to abandon a prosecution because of public outcry.

The problem for the defense attorney is that a large public outcry leads the client to falsely believe that public support translates to success at trial. It almost never does. So bad decisions are made with respect to pleas.

Ok, I’m finally beginning to feel sorry for Kate. Without a doubt she is naive, ill-informed and lacking in practical intellect.

Those advising her, however, be it parents, lawyers or Stat. Rape Inc. (aka #freekate) are grossly culpable in their misleading advice to her and without a doubt should be shouldering the majority blame for any poor outcome delivered to Kate and by definition for the pain and suffering of the victim and her family.

Kate is guilty of being an idiot (and breaking the law). Her fan club are guilty of ruining her life.

I love the irony in the last sentence of the lawyer’s letter: “The defense of Kaitlyn Hunt will continue until the matter is either resolved or determined in a court of law, not public opinion.”

It seems to me that it’s the Free Kate crowd who’s trying to get Kaitlyn Hunt acquitted in the court of public opinion.

Interestingly enough, this so-called attorney makes a great point for the prosecution regarding how incompetent the victim was to give any sort of consent in the final substantive paragraph — she just can’t understand the seriousness of what is going on (which is why we have the age of consent laws in the first place).

By the way — how does that explain the masturbation video that Kate sent to the victim?
