Will De Blasio Get Away With This?

Posted on | January 6, 2014 | 95 Comments

“You’ve got a group of people who are being fed nonsense. The guy who’s funding all this is a real estate guy. . . . He’s interested in buying the land. The stables are located right by the Javits Center and they want to put hotels up in there.”
David Koch, New York carriage driver

Real estate developer Steve Nislick

“The bad guy in this drama, according to the carriage drivers, is Steve Nislick, chief executive officer of a New Jersey-based real-estate development company, Edison Properties. The company ’employs legions of lobbyists to influence city decisions on real estate and zoning in its favor,’ journalist Michael Gross reported in 2009, pointing out that two of Edison’s businesses ‘have multiple locations in the same Far West Midtown neighborhood as the stables where the Central Park horses are housed.’ An anti-carriage pamphlet Nislick circulated in 2008 made this interesting observation: ‘Currently, the stables consist of 64,000 square feet of valuable real estate on lots that could accomodate up to 150,000 square feet of development. These lots could be sold for new development.’
Gross asked the obvious question: ‘What are the odds that good neighbor Nislick, the out-of-state real estate developer, simply covets those valuable, underdeveloped New York lots — and has teamed up with ambitious pols to use the emotions of animal rights activists as fuel for their own agendas?'”

Robert Stacy McCain, The American Spectator, “DeBlasio’s Horse-Drawn Carriage Ban: Is It Really About Campaign Cash?”

It was right there in the open: A story that, if it didn’t exactly “write itself,” as they say, was not very difficult to put together. All you have to do is go to SaveNYCHorseCarriages.com and start clicking links. Everything is right there, including links to news coverage of the shady background of the anti-carriage crusade:

Anyone can go see the “Timeline of a Scandal,” and anyone can find out how to contact carriage industry supporters for interviews. So why isn’t this sleazy hustle — real-estate money bankrolling politicians to push a phony animal-rights issue — front-page headlines in the New York Times? They won’t do it, so we’ll have to do it ourselves.

De Blasio is just pissed at the horses because he stepped in it one time with his Alligator shoes.

He has two other businesses in the area? What are the names of these businesses? The carriage drivers should probably picket these businesses to let others see what is going on. “Nislick stay out of politics!” sounds like a good chant to me.

Sounds completely plausible. When I moved to CO 13 years ago, people told me about ‘open space’- large parcels of land left undeveloped and in their natural state- and how local authorities and activists believed that preserving ‘open space’ on the fringes of suburban Denver was important as a quality of life issue. I remember telling folks that this open space would remain ‘open’ right up to the point someone came up with enough money to change the right people’s minds. And it has come to pass. Parcels of open space in northern Jefferson County CO are now being developed as industrial parks, office parks, townhomes, and luxury single family homes.

So yeah- the idea that someone covets the land in NYC for real estate development, and will hide their true motive behind some ‘animal welfare’ BS makes perfect sense.

    Follow the money.

Its funny, i was just reading a similar scam in my local paper in the UK: developers have got the horse society to lobby for a right of way, which developers want so the can build another 250 houses on protected “green belt” 30 miles land east of London. http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/local_news/10912380.Campaigners_alarmed_that_plan_for_new_route_could_pave_the_way_for_housing/

I came to the US on my own in 1979 when I was 16. I came here from Ireland to work for the summer and take home some money to make college life more fun.

My first week in NYC, I took at room at the YMCA at 34th and 7th, and set out to see all the evil that had been denied me in the west of Ireland.

I saw fist fights on 42nd St. at Times Square, prostitution, porn, drug use. I met some Moonies. I even walked from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to the Y at 34th and 7th – after dark.

I ended up working for some Greeks in Asbury Park, NJ. Love those Greeks.

I found NYC very kinetic and exciting, but I was happy to be a simple visitor.

Stacy and Smitty..you guys rock! After watching these lovely, earnest people soldier on under extreme daily sadistic ruthless persecution it’s a great relief to know that finally they’re being heard. It’s bad enough to be bullied by the dregs in the general population. But when your own local government turns on you rabidly and treats you like dirt beneath their feet for the crime of making a life working with your animals…well, it must be awfully good for them to know someone out there is listening and cares.

“Thoughts and Facts about the NYC Carriage Horses…”

“NYC Carriage Horses” and some of the Real Truth one should understand …”
    … & More.

One does not condemn an entire industry, for a few and very
rare occurrence’s of either mishap, accident or let’s just say a
    tarnished apple.

One does look at the betterment as a whole.
The NYC Carriage Industry as a whole, has continually upgraded all along. And not because they were mandated
to do so, but because it was in their best interest.
    Their
stables, and yes they have always been stables, are above code. The
monies spent in renovation, done because they care, and admire their
horses. They are not lacking in what they strive to do, in the upgrades
they have done. For they understand, the betterment of keeping up is
actually less expensive in the long run of keeping health and stable
    related costs down.

The newly elected mayor has refused several
invitations to tour the stables, even before his first day in office
came to be. Yet, the invite has always been there.
    The Public at
large has been invited for years now, to the Horse & Carriage
Association of NYC’s annual “ClipClop-NYC” weekend event. Which included
complete tours of the stables, question and answer sessions, and shown
the updates and told of the Heritage, History & Tradition of the NYC
    Carriage Horses & their families.

    And of those “In-Humane,
Cruel, or Abusive” photos the anti-horse folks like to spread around,
well a photo is a mere second in time.

And though the photo itself may be real, is the actual story behind it so?
Is the complete story attached to it?
I have found that not to be the case, in many of those “poster photos” the activists like to wave as signage.
There is certainly more to the truth of the matter then being shelved out let’s just say…
And one should remember to take in the whole perspective before making a judgement.
    For
every one of those “Abuse photos”, I can show you literally 100’s more
of the actual true photos of well kept and loved – Iconic NYC Carriage
Horses. And there is most definitely another side to the story to be
    shared.

    https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/1526602_10202257561256975_1740366255_n.jpg

There have been other studies, to which the anti-horse folks do not like to share.
Here is just an example, taken from a very lengthy and well written position statement by Blue Star Equiculture. And I will leave the link for the entire statement below, to which this entire study can be retrieved from.

    “An
informal survey of 130 of the New York City carriage horses was done in
2008 by Dr. John E. Lowe, DVM, a well-respected equine vet. Dr. Lowe
found that of 130 carriage horses, 50% were normal weight, 45% were
overweight, and 5% were thin, but not unhealthily so. He also found that
when trotted on pavement 124 were absolutely sound, while 4 were
slightly lame (1 on a scale of
1-5) and 2 were more significantly
lame (those two horses were sent home and not allowed to work). Dr. Lowe
also remarked on the coat condition of the horses, their overall
tractability and behavior, and their lack of respiratory ailments,
    normally common in stabled horses.
    Read his report here:
    http://www.equiculture.org/…/DrLoweJoggingReport.pdf

    Dr. Susan McLellan, DVM

    As
a veterinarian, I was appointed to the five member Rental Horse
Licensing and Protection Board for New York City in 2007, and served as
its chairperson until April 2013. The Board is charged with overseeing
the welfare of the carriage horses and rental horses in riding stables
throughout the five boroughs. We inspected all five of the stables
housing the carriage horses, as well as considering all other factors
    contributing to their wellbeing.

    We found the
conditions under which the carriage horses live and work to be quite
good. These horses and their owners and handlers have been scrutinized
for years by the Department of Health by whom they are licensed. In
addition, the ASPCA regularly observes the horses while they are working
and in their stables. Extensive regulations exist concerning the hours
they can work, the temperatures and other weather condition restrictions
when they must not work, and many other regulations concerning their
housing, veterinary examinations, vacation schedules, licensing, and
other factors affecting their well-being. These regulations are strictly
enforced. Because of the pressures they have been under for years from
humane groups, the carriage industry has strived to maintain these high
    standards.

Despite all this, these humane groups have
continued to demand that the carriage horse rides be ended. Under Mayor
Bloomberg this was unlikely to happen as he supported them, but with the
new mayor’s open opposition, they are facing the very real possibility
that they will be forced out of business. It is very easy to convince
the general public who know nothing about horses or carriage driving
that these horses are being mistreated.

    I have had the
opportunity to observe these horses both at work and in their stables
and I am convinced that they are well-treated, that they enjoy their
work, and that they certainly would *not* be better off if they were
forced into “retirement”. Not to mention the many people who have been
in this industry for years, some for generations, who would lose their
    livelihood.

Please try to support them in any way you can.

Indeed, when Dr. Harry Warner and several other veterinarians who
specialize in the treatment of horses accepted an invitation a few years
ago from owners of New York City’s horse-drawn carriages to inspect
their operations, they found no evidence that the animals were being
mistreated. He also rejected the notion offered by de Blasio and animal
rights groups that horses were unable to adapt to modern city life.

“I didn’t see a single horse that didn’t show all the signs that we associate with contentment,” said Warner, former chairman of American Association of Equine Practitioners’ (AAEP)
    Equine
Welfare Committee, in an interview, adding that, like people, there are
horses that don’t have the right temperament to live in the city. “No
it’s not too much stress. … There are horses who don’t want to be a
race horse. There are horses that don’t want to chase cattle.”

Werner, who has 40 years experience and a practice in North Granby, Conn., said none of the veterinarians
who took part in the inspections received any compensation from the carriage operators and paid their own expenses.”

    **
the above is a statement of fact as quoted. And is one of those truths
that the Humane Society, the ASPCA, NYCLASS, and The Coalition To Ban
(All) Horse Carriages, and other anti-horse folks will not share or tell
    you.

Makes one really think, does it not?

    “From a National Poll on AutoBlog.com ”
    http://www.autoblog.com/2014/01/02/nyc-mayor-de-blasio-ban-central-park-horse-carriages/
In his dozen years in office, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg
did his best to cut down on traffic congestion and spearheaded the
conversion of the city’s taxi fleet to hybrids. But his successor is out
to eliminate another kind of vehicle – the horse-drawn carriage – from
    the streets of Manhattan.
The carriages have been a staple of New
York’s Central Park since it opened in 1858, taking untold numbers of
tourists and locals alike for rides around the sprawling green space in
the heart of Manhattan. But the freshly sworn-in Bill de Blasio
says the practice is cruel to the animals and needs to go, announcing
his plan to replace the handsome cabs with “antique-style” electric
cars, though no specifics were given on just what those cars will be.
The development comes as welcome news to animal rights activists who have long campaigned
against the horse-drawn carriages. The drivers of said carriages,
however, claim that the horses are treated well, and retiring them to a
life of inactivity would be the crueler fate. The drivers reportedly
intend to fight against the measure, by court and by lobbying the City
Council that would have to approve it, but for his part, de Blasio seems
committed to making Central Park horse-drawn cabs a thing of the past.
What do you think, is it time for the horse-drawn carriages to go?
Cast your vote in our poll below, and if you have an idea for what they
should be replaced with, share your thoughts in Comments.

“The American Spectator” summed up the whole controversy quite well:

De Blasio’s Horse-Drawn Carriage Ban: Is It Really About Campaign Cash? By Robert Stacy McCain

    “Mayor
Bill de Blasio’s promise to ban New York City’s iconic horse-drawn
carriages could backfire, exposing what the newly-elected mayor’s
critics suggest is a corruption scandal masquerading as an animal-rights
crusade. Defenders of the carriage industry point to a real-estate
executive who is one of de Blasio’s major campaign donors as the driving
force behind the effort to abolish the carriages.

    “It’s got
everything a scandal could ever want,” says Eva Hughes, vice-president
of the Horse and Carriage Association of New York City. Hughes spent 16
years driving carriages, her husband still drives a carriage, and she
says they are fighting a “David and Goliath” battle against the mayor
    and his big-money backers.”

Broken Promise … for the sake of a horse statue?
Over 150 years of Tradition, Heritage & History to be thrown away?
    The Broken Promise…
    “Every Family has a shot.”
Quite simply stated: “When de Blasio became mayor Wednesday he cannot
declare horse carriage rides illegal. But a bill is before the City
Council. If the council passes the bill and de Blasio signs it, it could
close down the horse carriage industry.
Carriage drivers and owners made a public request of the new mayor:
“Come meet with us and the horses and see where they live and how they
    are treated.”
Horse folks, barns & stables… do not think that this is not your
problem, as activists will continue to roll onto other horse related
venues… There have been numerous online articles covering this story.
The latest, and maybe the two most important because of National
    readership are:
“Time magazine” online, and also the
    “Newspaper – NY Times” online.
I have left my commentary for all to read, along with some others in
this horse world. But I do ask folks, as Blue Star has done, to get
    involved in this.
The words Inhumane, Cruel and Abusive are the cry of the anti-horse
people. These activists want the horses gone from NYC. But, if you
actually delve into the facts, you will find out these folks have never
been inside the carriage stables nor know the actual great condition the
    horses are in.
As with any discipline or horse venue, yes there may be a tarnished
example. But, when you understand that approximately 30 million outings
over the last 30 years, and the “Best” record of safety of any horse
discipline anywhere… Well then you might just understand the case of
    the carriage drivers.
I have written my personal Notes and have shared them. I have taken over
600 photos to date of everything conceivable from the stables to the
drivers, to the carriages in the park and at the hack line. Of
passengers and families enjoying their outings.
And when you consider, this newly elected mayor, who has been invited to
tour the stables a few times and has refused to do so.
Well just where is the fairness?

Over the past five years, I have not only visited every aspect of the
NYC carriages & horses, I have been throughout the stables from the
    ground floors to the rooftop…
I have also visited some of their horses who were away on furlough / vacation in either upstate NY or Pa.
I have viewed the hackline, and have seen the activists taunting the carriage drivers and their fares.
I have written numerous Notes / articles pertaining to, and taken over some 600+ photos to date.
I have never backed down, nor away from the activists.
For they have not the knowledge nor the insight that I have acquired of these
“Iconic Horses” within NYC, and of their teamsters… and the families to which they provide for.
    To
lose such Tradition, Heritage & History for the sake of mis-truth’s
being fostered, would be surely the Crime of the Century…
    New York City…
This is Your heritage, of over 150 years.
These “working horses” are Living History in your city…
Your children, your families have a right to continue to enjoy their presence.
They are the last of the many wonderful working horses which actually built your city.
    Please think about that…
Talk with a carriage driver, or seek out the officials of the
Horse and Carriage Association of NYC for the actual truth…

Dude- you lost me on paragraph #27.

I appreciate your commitment, but that’s a sure way to lose an audience.

Lots of people thought something was up when De Blasio pushed the ban as soon as took office. Thanks for reporting this.

Dang, Smallville just ended a year or so ago, and the guy who played Lex Luthor is already looking ten years older.

This is about The Big Lie, of course.

I wrote a fairly in-depth article about the rise of deceit in our society. It’s over at the ArticleFiveProcess site.

The point of the article is to lay our the drivers of deception, and what we can do about it. (It’s the kind of article that goes deep, so I tried some formatting and footnoting tricks to see if I could make it more digestible. I’d be interested if those tricks helped.)

Bottom line, yes there are things we can do to fix it.

Edison let some jerk steal my car. It was returned months later with $5,000 worth of parking tickets. Edison didn’t inform me and I ended up in court. Fortunately a dear NYPD officer – whose car was later run into a tree – found the ‘alarm’ or theft report.

The horses are stabled in the sixties near the FDR drive. Great view of Alinsky Island from there and mega traffic noise. Two reasons not to rent!

They’ll still have to dodge the tables and chairs the anti smoke Bloomberg has put in traffic lanes so that new yawkers and guests can inhale DIESEL FUMES!

It’s already there. Once they let the Illinois RAT Hellary take Senator Moynihan’s Senate seat – in exchange for standing by her pillock of a ‘husband’ – Chicago and NY are as one!

Hillary will regret opening the door for Obama – when he blocks her Presidential ambitions a SECOND time!

Was not Mr De Blasio the former comptroller of NYC government?
Is there not some irony in the fact that a man who in a past job was the man supposed to root out corruption and fiscal mismanagement of NYC government BUT now accepts the money of a contributor whose electoral contributions to both primary and general elections run roughshod ( if you pardon the pun) over NYC electoral law.
I smell something. It is not the smell of horse shit.It is the stink of a hypocrite

I know what you mean. Once we built a new house two miles west of the western edge of town, out in the beginnings of horse country (this was in Michigan). When we sold eight years later, we were ten miles East of the edge of the developed area.

(We still had wooded parcels and a few empty fields, but it was McMansions and open-plan neighborhoods for mile after mile. Traffic was horrible.)

Making this a left/right issue disserves the horses. NYC is a Democratic city. If you really care about the horses you need to put partisan politics aside, stop sniping about property rights and “liberals,” and point out to the public how the radical animal rights activists are lying when they allege abuse and cruelty and that horses with jobs have the most secure future. But thanks for speaking up on this issue.

By going all bi-partisan about it you miss the most salient and overarching point about it. Google “Fen’s Law.” See what you get back.
