Latina Actress Blacklisted for Supporting Republican Candidate

Posted on | January 18, 2014 | 60 Comments

If I had ever heard of Maria Conchita Alonzo before now, I don’t remember it, but I know I’ll never forget her after this:

A famed actress is facing backlash in San Francisco’s Latino community, after she voiced support for a conservative candidate for California governor.
Maria Conchita Alonso starred in a campaign ad for Assemblyman Tim Donnelly of San Bernardino County, a Tea Party favorite who is seeking the Republican nomination. . . .
“Politicians and big government are killing our prosperity, pushing welfare costs through the roof and driving our schools into the ground,” Donnelly said in the ad.
Standing next to Donnelly, Alonso jokingly translated in Spanish, “We’re screwed.” . . .
Alonso is an actress of Cuban and Venezuelan descent. She is perhaps best known for her role in the movie “Moscow on the Hudson” which also starred Robin Williams.
The actress was to perform next month at the Brava Theater Center in San Francisco’s Mission District in a Spanish-language version of “The Vagina Monologues,” scheduled for a run from February 14th through 17th. The show is being produced by none other than Eliana Lopez, wife of San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi.
“We really cannot have her in the show, unfortunately,” Lopez told KPIX 5. . . .
“Of course she has the right to say whatever she wants. But we’re in the middle of the Mission. Doing what she is doing is against what we believe,” Lopez said.

Regular Right Guy notes the irony that Alonzo escaped totalitarianism in Cuba only to suffer political repression in San Francisco.

A couple years ago, Alonzo called Sean Penn a “communist a–hole,” a statement that everybody knows is true, but which has so much more authority when it is said by a refugee from Cuba.

By the way, Michelle Malkin had a very heartfelt column this week about the hurtfulness of left-wing identity politics. It is sadly remarkable how some “progressives” think it is clever to deride Malkin — an Oberlin College alumna who is one of the most successful businesswomen of the New Media age — with such grossly derogatory slurs as “Manila whore” and “Subic Bay bar girl.”

This is pure totalitarianism. Hollywood has turned into the Soviet Union practically. You don’t follow the line you’ll get punished and maybe punished hard.

I never met any Subic Bay bar girls, just the Angeles City (former) bar girls… life and reality are what they are, and I’d have been a repulsive human being if I held it against them. They were my friends.

Why do liberals hate with so much venom?

The piece says she is best known for Moscow on the Hudson, but I think more people would remember her from the Schwarzenegger movie, The Running Man.

The Hollywood Blacklist is alive and well. They love to demonize Joe McCarthy and then engage in their own blacklist all the time.

    January 18th, 2014 @ 5:56 pm

This is why most conservative actors and musicians tend to keep their politics to themselves. The “blacklist” effect against conservatives is far more comprehensive than the ’50s blacklist against communist sympathizers ever was.

Do note that the production from which she was dropped was “The Vagina Monologues,” so it isn’t as if it were serious art.

Liberals are all for “diversity”…except when it comes to opinions. Imagine if a conservative employer fired a Latina actress for supporting Jerry Brown (or any other “progressive”, for that matter)? #Trollmageddon #MSNBCMeltdown #WarOnWomen #Boycott #CueJesseAndAl #HolderFilesSuit #Racism etc. etc. etc.

If she was an abortion advocate, believed plastic bags caused global warming and called Sarah Palin a c—t, she would be considered a “wise Latina” by the left.

Thanks RS, sorry I got the original image wrong. Alonso has been on, I think, Cavuto, which is the only place I remember seeing her. Important though that she came here to escape exactly this kind of bullsh*t.

I think it’s safe to assume that she was probably a Feminist, given that she was to perform in the Vagina Monologues. Note how Identity Politics inevitably leads to tribal warfare and cannibalism among the various groups as they struggle for supremacy in the Battle of Victimhood.

Nice to remember about Harvey that he got his start releasing movies in the US like England’s “I’m Not Feeling Myself Tonight” (also known as “Sex-Ray”), a “comedy” that feature three sexual assaults for laughs in the first fifteen minutes.

Harvey has never been a big deal macher. He is a big deal to apsiring actresses since he does smaller budget films that they can get exposure on (provided of course those actresses expose some extra to Harvey). He was always second tier, at best. That is why he is such an asshole (he is insecure).

The original Hollywood Blacklist of communists in the postwar period actually had nothing to do with McCarthy, whose Wheeling speech denouncing the State Department wasn’t until 1950. It started when the publisher of the Hollywood Reporter denounced a group of screenwriters and producers as communist sympathizers.

The House Un-American Activities Committee did investigate, and ten people were convicted of contempt for refusing to answer questions. Besides that, the blacklisting arose in and was conducted by Hollywood itself.

  45. Adjoran
    January 19th, 2014 @ 2:30 am

Not really. These are private companies that are in effect enforcing their own speech codes. Government isn’t involved.

Citizens can vote by refusing to buy movie tickets, DVDs, or downloads from the studios that practice this (which is, unfortunately, most of them).

  46. ihazconservative
    January 19th, 2014 @ 9:33 am

McCarthyism actually involved abuse of government power, not ‘I don’t want you in my production of The Vagina Monologues’. A little bit different.

Did she resign or was she fired? If she was fired, that is illegal in California. Can’t fire someone for their political opinions. Lawsuit just waiting to happen. But if she resigned, then she is out of luck. The moral of the story is to never quit, let them fire you.
