Gay Movie Director Drugged, Raped Teenage Boy in 1999, Lawsuit Alleges

Posted on | April 17, 2014 | 59 Comments

Bryan Singer, the openly gay film director best known for X-Men movies, has been accused of molesting a teenage male model in 1999. The lawsuit is described by the Hollywood Reporter:

Bryan Singer, director, producer and writer of more than two dozen productions including the X-Men films, was accused Wednesday in a federal lawsuit of having sexually abused a 17-year-old boy at estates in Los Angeles and Kailua . . .
According to the suit, the Los Angeles parties were held at a mansion in Encino referred to as the M & C Estate, whose residents were Marc Collins-Rector and Chad Shackley, whose younger brother Scott Shackley was in [victim Michael F.] Egan’s high school class. Collins-Rector and Chad Shackley were principals of Digital Entertainment Network, an early online streaming video company. The complaint asserts that Collins-Rector sexually abused Egan and threatened him with a gun, but does not name him as a defendant.
(Collins-Rector subsequently was charged and pled guilty to transporting minors across state lines for sex, and is a registered sex offender.)

Details from the federal lawsuit:

The parties were typically sordid and featured sexual contact between adult males and the many teenage boys who were present for the parties. Further, the parties included the distribution of drugs and alcoholic beverages to the teenage boys at the party. Upon information and belief, the nature of the parties was well-known and notorious among many men in the Hollywood entertainment industry. . . .
During the infamous and degenerate parties at the M & C Estate, the adult males engaged in sexual contacts with the Plaintiff, as well as the other boys present. Plaintiff never freely, voluntarily, and knowingly consented to these sexual interactions, and often resisted them. . . .
Approximately 2–3 months after Collins-Rector began sexually abusing Plaintiff, Defendant Singer was socializing with Collins-Rector around the estate’s swimming pool and Plaintiff was in the pool. In compliance with the “rules” imposed by Collins-Rector that people in the pool area were not allowed to wear clothes, Plaintiff was nude as was Defendant Singer. Collins-Rector ordered Plaintiff out of the pool, and Defendant Singer hugged Plaintiff and grabbed his bare buttocks. They then went to the jacuzzi where Collins-Rector had Plaintiff sit on his lap and fondled Plaintiff’s genitals. Collins-Rector then passed Plaintiff to Defendant Singer and Plaintiff was made to sit on Defendant Singer’s lap. Defendant Singer provided an alcoholic beverage to Plaintiff and mentioned finding a role for him in an upcoming movie that he was directing. Defendant Singer told Plaintiff how “this group” controls Hollywood, and that he was sexy. Defendant Singer masturbated Plaintiff and then performed oral sex upon him. Defendant Singer solicited Plaintiff to perform oral sex upon him which Plaintiff resisted. Defendant Singer flagrantly disregarded Plaintiff’s unwillingness to submit, and forced Plaintiff’s head underwater to make Plaintiff perform oral sex upon him. . . .
Defendant Singer visited the estate regularly and continued to sexually assault Plaintiff. He coerced Plaintiff to masturbate him and to acquiesce to his masturbating Plaintiff, and to each performing oral sex on the other. Defendant Singer also continued to anally rape Plaintiff. . . .
On more than one occasion, Plaintiff was flown to Hawaii when he was 17 years old. Two of these trips took place on or between August 1, 1999, and October 31, 1999, during which times his stay lasted roughly one week. Plaintiff stayed in the Paul Mitchell estate in Kailua, Hawaii, with Collins-Rector, Shackley, and others, including a number of other juvenile males. . . .
On each occasion when Plaintiff was in Hawaii, he was required to interact with Defendant Singer while at the Paul Mitchell estate. On more than one occasion, Defendant Singer provided him with drugs, including cocaine, a pill identified as “green triangle” which is believed to be a reference to the drug Ecstasy, Xanax, Rohypnol, pain pills believed to be Vicodin or Percocet, and alcoholic beverages. . . .
Defendant Singer put a handful of cocaine against Plaintiff’s nose and forced him to inhale it. Defendant Singer then provided Plaintiff with a beverage which he drank which significantly impacted his consciousness and his motor skills. Defendant Singer then entered the pool where he nonconsensually masturbated Plaintiff and performed oral sex upon him. Defendant Singer caused Plaintiff to rub his erect penis against Defendant Singer’s buttocks. He forced Plaintiff’s head underwater and made Plaintiff orally copulate him. He then caused Plaintiff to get out of the pool and lie face down on a lounge chair. To continue the sexual assault, Defendant Singer spit on Plaintiff’s buttocks, spanked him, and forced a handful of cocaine onto Plaintiff’s face. He then anally raped Plaintiff. He subsequently caused them to go to the jacuzzi where he provided another beverage to Plaintiff. Defendant Singer attempted to insert his penis into Plaintiff’s mouth which Plaintiff resisted, but he ultimately was able to force his penis into Plaintiff’s mouth. Defendant Singer then assisted Plaintiff to their room where he again anally raped Plaintiff. . . .

So, was this an action film or Bryan Singer’s idea of a romantic comedy?

For the record, the director’s attorney says none of it ever happened.

Who ever heard of a Hollywood director being into drugs and sex, right?

Remember: Corey Feldman said pedophiles are “everywhere” in Hollywood.

    Our esteemed host quoted:

On more than one occasion, Plaintiff was flown to Hawaii when he was 17 years old. The words “contributory negligence” occur to me, at the very least. If the Plaintiff had already been forced into sex once, and didn’t like it, why would he go along on other trips?

If the Defendant had sexual contact with someone who was legally a minor, then yeah, that’s a crime. But when I see stories about lawsuits from people who (apparently) willingly accompanied someone he had said had previously raped him, my bovine feces detector starts going off, loudly. This is no longer about a crime; this is now just about money.

Did the Plaintiff state that the Respondent had held him in captivity? If not, then he accompanied the Respondent voluntarily!

My judgement is for the Plaintiff, in the amount of 69¢. If it becomes a criminal case, then that’s different.

The specifics of the allegations certainly raise a lot of questions. Where were the boy’s parents? Why did he continue to go to the estate and fly to Hawaii? No one is suggesting “open season” on 17 year olds, or any age group for that matter. Rather, it sounds as though the young “victim” was attempting to use his “attributes” to advance himself. When that didn’t happen, he files a lawsuit.

    Two thoughts:

    1. There will be cries that Adult Gays don’t go after boys, again, and this is out of their “normal.”

    2. The casting couch has returned with a vengance on both sides.

Reading the article reminds me of this study

    http://www.urban.org/publications/413047.html

    Specifically the section marked “recruitment”.
It’s easy to say “He should have refused to go”, but predators are often very good at manipulating their victims. You have a teenaged boy who gets introduced to Hollywood, and gets just enough goodies to make him think that he has a shot. If he refuses he gets told that he’ll be blacklisted forever. Meanwhile, his family is putting pressure on him to accept these invitations since this is his big chance. I doubt he told his parents or friends what was going on. It would be humilitating and would not only impact him but his friends as well (His friend’s older brother introduced the victim to his abusers).
Basically he was thrown into a toxic environment with people who are very good at manipulation and control when he was at an age where he doesn’t know enough to defend himself and where family and social pressures would encourage him to keep quiet.

For time immemorial it’s worked like this: People –perhaps especially young people– wanting to break into show business and become big famous rich movie stars will do _anything_ for that big break. And Hollywood is full of pervs ready to accommodate them in that.

  17. Dana
    April 17th, 2014 @ 2:52 pm

The age of consent is 18 in California, which would make the Plaintiff’s allegations rape; it is 16 in Hawaii, which makes the allegations not statutory rape, but the Plaintiff alleges that force was used, which would be rape.

In a criminal case, where the standard of proof is beyond a reasonable doubt, I would think that the Plaintiff would have a difficult time establishing that; the only witnesses were the other party participants. In a civil suit, it’s the preponderance of the evidence, which is, in the end, frequently a judgement call.

  18. RS
    April 17th, 2014 @ 2:58 pm

If, indeed, the parents were putting pressure on him to succeed in Hollywood, they’re partially to blame. There is not enough money on earth to get me to encourage my son or daughter to get involved in this. Certainly, there are any number of stories about parents pushing their kids into show business hoping to cash in themselves. It’s despicable.

Why am I thinking of the line from the song Fancy, “You be nice to the gentlemen, Fancy, and they’ll be nice to you?”

If the family “put pressure on him to accept,” either they did know — even if in surface denial — or they were so stupid they can only be Obama voters.

This is not the first time Bryan Singer and his entourage have been accused of impropriety with minors.

    http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,287669,00.html

Bryan Singer denies it, and maybe the allegations are false. But they are certainly not implausible. If heterosexual directors have been sexually exploiting actors for decades, then certainly homosexual directors are capable of it. It’s not as if adult homosexual filmmakers have some magical halo and aura around them which renders them incapable of sexual crimes, right?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Salva

Whether these allegations are true or false, they prove one thing, which is the polar opposite reactions that liberals, leftists, progressives, etc. have depending upon the sexual orientation of the accused. Progressives and feminists chant “We believe survivors of rape!” or “support victims!”
All of those platitudes go out the window when the accused is openly homosexual, and they circle the wagons, denouncing the allegations as lies and homophobia. I say “openly homosexual” because in a lot of instances of male/male sexual abuse, progressives and feminists will always try to claim that the perpetrator is still somehow heterosexual, unless the perpetrator declared and certified his homosexuality in advance of the accusations.

Victor Salva wrote and directed a horror movie called Jeepers Creepers. Subsequent to its release, he was sentenced to three years in prison for sexually abusing the underage male star of his debut move, Powder. Zoetrope Studios’ (Francis Ford Coppola) spokesman, upon hearing of his conviction as a pedophile, said, “Jeepers Creepers made forty-five million dollars. Of course we’ll work with him again.” The sequel, Jeepers Creepers 2, featured even more over pedophilic imagery and suggestions. They’re up to Jeepers Creepers 3 now.

They know, in Hollywood. They absolutely know. They just don’t care as long as the money’s there.

I think you’ve got the timeline a bit wrong.

Victor Salva’s sex crime charges were in 1988 and he was released from prison in 1989 (he only served 15 months of a 3 year sentence). The child that he molested in 1988 was a 12 year old actor who starred in his movie “Clownhouse.” “Powder” was not released until 1995 and “Jeepers Creepers” was not released until 2001.

    http://articles.latimes.com/2006/jun/11/entertainment/ca-salva11

The star of “Powder,” Sean Patrick Flanery, would have been around 29 to 30 when it was being made. Never heard of any allegations that Salva tried to do anything sexual to Flanery, but anything is possible.

However, although there have not been allegations of Salva trying to molest any actors in his later films, he almost always includes homoerotic and even pedophiliac themes. In the film “Powder,” the messianic main character is completely bald and hairless and likes to stare at shirtless teens in the gym and gets called “faggot” by ignorant townspeople.

Some psychologists picked up on Salva’s message:

“According to Sandra Baker, executive director of the Child and Family Institute in Sacramento, Calif., child molesters think “they are more perceptive and beautiful than other people. They feel misunderstood.” Salva’s having made Powder a pale, hairless, sensitive outcast fits “what pedophiles can relate to,” she adds. “They want their victims to be hairless usually. They don’t want adult sex characteristics.”

L.A. family therapist Lisa Hacker notes that when a teacher (Jeff Goldblum) tells Powder that he’s “never had better sex” since being touched by him, and then later strokes his bald head, the conduct is “very intimate and inappropriate.”
