A Cheap ‘Rape’ Smear on Trump

Let’s begin by saying I’m not a fan of Donald Trump, personally or politically. The first time he spoke at CPAC, Trump made a lot of protectionist noise in regard to China that struck me as both ignorant and irresponsible. Protective tariffs are just bad economics, as every intelligent person has understood since Adam Smith made the case against mercantilism in The Wealth of Nations. Tariffs are taxes, and the purpose of taxation is to produce revenue for the government. A protective tariff, by contrast, is not intended to produce revenue, rather it is intended to reduce foreign trade, which tends to benefit manufacturing interests at the expense of consumers and agricultural interests. Protective tariffs are usually accompanied by a system of domestic subsidies and regulations that beget crony capitalism. Whatever our economic problems, protectionism is not the solution, and so Trump’s China-bashing anti-free-trade rhetoric was distasteful.

So I’ve never been a fan of Trump-as-politician, but what the Daily Beast has done is as distasteful as a protective tariff: Resurrected a two-decade-old claim by Trump’s ex-wife Ivana that he “raped” her in 1989. This claim was made in their divorce and published in a 1993 book.

So what? When a rich man’s wife divorces him, she always accuses him of awful things. It’s a shakedown: “Give me the money I want or I’ll drag your name through the mud and make an ugly spectacle of it.”

Who knows if it’s true? And who cares? Ivana got her money and Trump moved on with his life. It’s over. Ancient history.

This doesn’t mean I’m in favor of Trump’s candidacy, but there was no point in the Daily Beast dragging this old mess out now.

I used to support Israel and all that too because that’s what I was taught, until I stumbled across empirical information that rocked my entire worldview after discovering the raw truth.     Good grief. Like Stacy, I am no Trump fan (although the first season of The Apprentice was one of the best reality TV seasons of all time). But this is not only dubious due to the circumstances of the claim, it’s over 20 years old. This was in the news back then. WTF?

    If you need to go back that far to divorce papers to find a reason to disqualify Trump as a Presidential candidate, you have to be as dopey as most of his supporters.

    It only benefits wage earners employed in the protected industries or their dependents. Working people in general are consumers and do not benefit from protective tariffs.

    When a rich man’s wife divorces him, she always accuses him of awful things.

    Just to recall, Donald Trump was the initiator of those divorce proceedings, de facto for sure and I believe de jure as well. That’s actually very atypical behavior for a middle-aged man with children.

    One thing you could say in his favor is that four of his five children are public figures only in a lawyer’s term-of-art sort of way and the fifth has not done anything particularly obnoxious or vulgar. Not sure how he pulled that off.

    Not sure it was two years ‘ere they separated. More saliently, Trump insisted on divorcing Ivana against her better judgment. That’s quite atypical for a man with children, most especially since Ivana was not known to have a problem with liquor or street drugs and was not known to have cuckolded him. She was so intimately involved in the day-to-day business of running his hotels, it’s difficult to imagine she’s a borderline case (or could be without acquiring the reputation Leona Helmsley managed to acquire).

    I’m sorry, are you meaning to say that America’s period of most rapid economic expansion did not take place under a tariff wall and an “unsound” bi-metallic currency? Is that what you are saying? Or are you admitting that this is true, but that since “populists” make these same arguments, and since populists are x,y,z (“racist”, “sexist”, Christian, “homophobe” whatever), then the arguments as such are bogus?     3. The tariff wall was not that high. The utility of tariffs is that they require a modest base of information to collect. Their primary function was support of the federal government,which at that time consumed less than 3% of gross domestic product. Other supports were liquor and tobacco excises and postage stamps, which no one has ever contended are engines of economic growth.

    4. Sales of manufactured articles are the least price-sensitive of any good. Sales of fairly undifferentiated goods such as grain will be more price sensitive. That’s where your tariffs will have the most intense impact on domestic markets.

    5. Whether you make use of a bimetallic standard, a gold standard, or a currency board, these sorts of monetary arrangements are given to unpredictable inflations and deflations. You can look at the effects of the Euro in southern Europe if you want to see contemporary implications of such a currency.
