Let’s Face It: Jesus Railed Against The ‘Archbishops’ Of His Day

Hot Air recirculates some heated breath from Rowan Williams

Rowan Williams says Jesus would have joined protesters from the anti-corporate Occupy movement who have been camped outside London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral for more than seven weeks.
In a British magazine, the leader of the world’s 78 million Anglicans worldwide insisted that Jesus would be “there, sharing the risks, not just taking sides.”

If you read the Gospels, Jesus’s encounters with people generally took one of two tracks: if they were people in authority, or ought to know better, he lowered the rhetorical boom. The rest of the people were dealt with far less harshly.

Since Jesus, it’s become something of a sport to attempt to rebrand the carpenter whose job was to bring salvation to fit whatever cause is at hand. What a demotion.

Somebody needs to politely suggest to Rowan Williams that he may be as far off base today as the Pharisees were in the day of Jesus. The notion that the secular effort of the #Occupy movement has even the slightest overlap with Jesus’s mission is daft, as un-Biblical as an ‘Archbishop’, and arguably heretical. Jesus, for example ensured the taxes were paid.

The archbishop said that when Jesus said “give Caesar what belongs to Caesar,” he was asking “what’s the exact point at which involvement in the empire of capitalist economy involves you fatally.”

Really, you Archie-comic Bishop? What was the context of Jesus’s famous statement?

And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. (Mark 12:13)

The authorities were begging the question: “Have you given up cheating on your taxes?” And Jesus, masterfully, cut the inquisitors to the bone. Furthermore, what do you mean by “involvement in the empire of capitalist economy”? Judea was a Roman province at the time of Jesus’s physical life. Are you making an economic assertion about how the economy worked then? Are we still clinging to the fiction that the British or American economies are purely capitalist now?

Lord have mercy on you sir, and may the Holy Spirit give you an unction to study the Word with some real, prayerful, un-polluted understanding. Because right now, it looks like the rebukes that Jesus laid on the chief priests, scribes, and Pharisees of his day may apply to you, as well.

Rowan Williams’ elevation didn’t change him a bit:  he still as much the leftist tool he ever was.

Awkwardly, if Jesus did visit the Occupy sites, it would probably be to cure the protesters of their STDs and lice.

The Left and Right have always tried to capture Christianity as “their own” because, after all, offering Paradise is what politicians DO.

Too bad it’s not theirs to offer, eh?

I’ve challenged Leftards for years to point out the Bible verses where Jesus recommended sending out Caesar’s troops to collect charitable contributions at spear point to pass out to certain poor with as much fanfare as possible.

    Crickets.

I can point to several verses where Jesus commanded us to give charity as individuals and as privately as possible, with no fanfare.

Oh please, Williams goes to the opposite extreme from the Pharisees. They would have hung his mangy ass on a cross, only in his case it would have been what he deserves. The Pharisees at least made the pretense of honor and integrity by way of adherence to the strictest points of the Law. Williams ass rapes the Law every time he opens his mouth. In those days people like him were seen running around blabbering like idiots.

Oh, look. A penumbra. Is the archbishop running for Judge somewhere?

This episode took place during the expansion of the Roman Empire. Caesar laid claim to everything. The Jews were an occupied people.

The Jews had their own money which they traded with, the shekel, and thus refused to accept the king’s denarius (which had Caesar’s picture on it).  In one brilliant sentence, Jesus noted that while Caesar may own some things (worthless tokens with Caesar’s face on them), he does not own everything …

Turning to Luke 23, we learn that Jesus’ contemporaries considered His statement of rebellion against paying taxes. See Matthew 9, Mark 2, and Luke 18 to see that tax-collectors were considered sinners.Furthermore, when Satan tempted Jesus in the desert, he offered Him all the kingdoms of the world. Meaning they were Satan’s to deliver. Jesus refused. And it was the state who killed our Savior.

Neither am I.  That site was complete garbage.  Pictures of people who bear a passing resemblance to one another being presented as the same person?  Really?

I can tell you from being a contemporary of Palin (and Obama) that Barracuda was the name of a popular song of the time.  It would be a natural to give as a nickname to an athlete who had a tendency to help his/her team pick off their opponents.  To pretend that Barracuda has a connection to Barack Obama because they both have “Barrac” as part of their names is lame and, frankly, crazy.  In the terms of certifiably so.

Actually, the Roman Empire was pretty well done expanding by the early 1st century. The only thing that was permanently added to empire afterwards was Numidia.

Lady, you have way too much time on your hands and have smoked way too much pot in order to see “connections” that aren’t  there.

The Archbishop, who looks as batty as he sounds, simply exemplifies the progressive contagion that contaminates certain sectors of the church… In no possible way would Jesus condone that idiotic, hateful, filthy, contemptible behavior of those Occupy morons…they are mean, egocentric, and lazy!

Personally, I don’t think Jesus would be too thrilled with either side.  That could probably go for a lot of the various “sides” in play at this point.
In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Jesus just might be kinda po’d with all the various sides if he was walking around today — especially when each various, different side of whatever of the multiple disagreements people have with each other today try to appropriate Jesus as their personal cheerleader.  I don’t think Jesus likes that; they probably shoudl stop.

Consider using “a-Biblical”.  It has a cache that  “un-Biblical” simply does not.

Well, as one of the few traditional Episcopalians left in the PECUSA, the Church of England is our mother church. So, how did the Druid lover, Williams, become Archbishop of Canterbury you may ask? Thank now Roman Catholic Tony Blair! The British prime minister gets to recommend to the monarch who the ABC will be from a list of two whole candidates. Blair picked the worst of the two and Queen Elizabeth waved the pocketbook for him to be the worst. archbishop. evah! One can only hope that Prime Minister Cameron can. Wait. Never mind! We are doomed!
