Today’s Metaphor For Progress

McPherson Square Park, over at American Glob, has the before/after pictures that show us just how swell Progress can be. I’m looking at the Daily Presidential Tracking Poll, seeing that #OccupyOvalOffice has nearly clawed himself to a single-digit disapproval, and wondering if we’re losing sight of the prize.

Between now and November, every number is going to be as cooked as McPherson Square: the jobs number, the approval number, the Dow. You’re dealing with an utterly ruthless crew, in this administration. Do not forget that, ye patriots.

He’s been quiet.  That always makes people think better of him.  And the focus on the primaries probably helps, too, but I would expect those factors to go away for the general.

With the Republican Chain Saw Cage Match going on, Obama is sliding by.  Following daily tracking polls will drive you crazy.

The real number that matters most in polling is that Obama consistently fails to draw 50% support in head-to-head match-ups with any Republican.  This is important for an incumbent President because the challenger, even if a relative well-known public figure, isn’t as well known as the President and has a chance to introduce himself and his program to those who don’t know him well.

The President doesn’t get to redefine himself (Obama doesn’t seem to realize this yet).  His only chance for reelection if he is getting less than half the vote will be to demonize the opponent.  This is harder than it seems, even with huge amounts of cash.

I think Barry-O’s shrinking margin of disapproval is a reflection of the Stockholm Syndrome effect.  Recession is the norm now and the sheep are grateful for the pittances thrown them by the shepherd in the White House.

Americans’ attention span is brief and they are adjusting to their new reality.  I believe Obama banked on this and it’s why he seems so confident.
