‘Gentleman’ Jim Moran: I Love This Bitch

For Abby the Shih Tzu mix, Tuesday was a big day. Until last Friday, when she was picked up by animal shelter Homeward Trails, she had been roaming the streets of Washington. On Tuesday, however, Abby got a chance to find a new home at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal’s Paws for Celebration adoption drive (yes, that was a mouthful) in the Cannon Caucus Room.

I, for one, rejoice that Moran could take a break from the day trading to express more concern for strays than the unborn. Somewhat less snarkily, this is what you do if you want to stay elected: go make friends with pet owners who have vast amounts of cash to spend keeping you in office, while blowing off any sort of leadership role entirely.

It’s not fair to say that Moran is, to politics, what Wally is to the Dilbert cartoon strip; Wally at least affords an occasional guffaw. Moran and the rest of the senior leadership in DC continue to epitomize the truth that, while the Founders served up some great mechanism, there was no guarantee that sound policy would ensue. That’s on us.

One hopes that the Almighty will coax Patrick Murray to run again in 2014. Not to wish an ill fate on Moran, but the sooner Jim’s political career ends, the sooner we can set about avoiding Detroit as a national destiny.

In closing, let’s cast our mind back to an era before the likes of Moran blighted our politics:
