Jake Knotts ‘Raghead’ Controversy
Posted on | June 4, 2010 | 36 Comments
Meanwhile, GOP political consultant Wes Donehue, co-host of “Pub Politics,” justifies suppressing the video:
We will not be publishing Thursday’s episode of Pub Politics.
As we’ve said from the beginning of this show, our goal has always been to show the lighter side of politics in South Carolina. We want to show people that politics can be fun and you can talk civilly with those who disagree with you. What Senator Knotts said on Thursday’s show does not fit with our program and its goals.
Phil Bailey and Wesley Donehue
(Hat-tip: Dave Weigel.) Of course, if Wes Donehue had a sex video of Nikki Haley, you can bet that sucker would be on YouTube in a heartbeat. The South Carolina tourism bureau has come up with a new slogan to honor the state’s GOP operatives: “The Scumbag State!”
Corey Hutchins of the Columbia Free Press has more of Knotts’ comments:
“She’s a raghead that’s ashamed of her religion trying to hide it behind being Methodist for political reasons. . . .
“This is Jakie Knotts trying to let the people know . . .
“This isn’t the first time I’ve said it . . . I’m not on a crusade to downgrade her, but if someone asks me I’ll tell ‘em. And look here, someone wants to vote for her knowing the truth, vote for her. . . .
“We need a good Christian to be our governor. . . She’s hiding her religion. She ought to be proud of it. I’m proud of my god.”
Yeah, they really need “a good Christian” down there. How about that fine upstanding fellow, Will Folks? Or how about that notable exemplar of family values, Larry Marchant?

Yeah, they really need “a good Christian” down there.
They could just re-elect Sanford. Or does SC have term limits for the governor?

“”You know what? I’m really starting to understand how someone could be a liberal. If this is Republicanism….””
It might explain how someone could be liberal, except that this type of behavior is readily demonstrated on pretty much a daily basis by liberals all across the country.
The fact is, it’s not Republicanism or Democratism, it’s “Politics” (of a certain brand), and what it does explain is why there are so many people who are so fed up and disgusted that they ignore politics altogether and do not vote or participate in our electoral process in any way.

So, how much is suppressing that worth on the open market? Five, ten grand? It’s a state Senator, but there’s a gubernatorial campaign at risk there.

I would like to thank SC for providing so much political entertainment. I thought it would end with, Mark “But she’s my soul mate” Sanford, but the sleaze and stupidity factor just keeps on coming.
Actually, it gives you a prefect example of why people don’t go into politics. Either it showcases your utter stupidity and corruption, or you get smeared six ways from yesterday.

And you wonder why I shot all those Protestants. Mon Dieu, it was bad enough when Axelrod had the Democrats playing the “concerned Christian Conservative” card…

I’d have thought The Other McCain would resist the temptation to jump on the liberals’ bandwagon of politically correctness and the crusade to police all speech.

As a New Yorker (upstate) transplanted to South Carolina 13 years ago, I am horrifed at the black eye SC has received over the past year. The politics here may be dirty, (although I honestly don’t remember it being this bad in the past) but this truly does not reflect on the fine people of SC. I love it here, and I would be devastated if I had to leave, let alone move back to NY, the taxation and regulation capital of the the country.
I think that the appalling chaos we are witnessing today is the result of voters becoming more engaged and demanding, which has put the entitled politicians of SC and the entire nation on high alert. I credit the Tea Party and similar movements for the progress toward taking back our country.
The people of South Carolina and the United States will no longer accept dirty politics and backroom deals. We demand honor, integrity and accountability, and it appears that we will have to wade through a lot of crap in order to get there. I sincerely hope that people will see through the fog of corruption to the potential that abounds in SC.

Ace, if you ever noticed, isn’t a very deep thinker.
angela is correct above, it began because the establishment had thought they were finally free of the reformers and could loot and pillage the treasury, the taxpayers, and our future at will, when Haley appeared on the radar. She is a threat.
But do notice that nearly every single person involved in the smears against Haley is more closely associated with Andre Bauer than anyone else in SC politics. At least three of them have criminal convictions in the past, and a fourth has a pending DUI case. All this crap traces back to one source, and none of them is exactly the cream of the Palmetto State.

I’m thinking tar, feathers, poltician: some assembly required.
The interesting thing is that every conservative I know is reacting to this guy the same way: with absolute loathing. And as for his comments about “a good Christian”…. where? not from his pie-hole, for sure.

r.e. free speech. Free speech is not speech without consequence. If some arse shows himself to be so he should be called on it.
