Best C-SPAN Moment Evah!

Helen Rittelmeyer is a friend of mine, a brilliant young conservative writer whom I long ago dubbed “The Amazing Miss Rittelmeyer.” Exactly why her ex-boyfriend Todd Seavey decided that a C-SPAN book forum would be an ideal place to discuss their “tumultuous” relationship . . . well, see if you can figure out why he’s her ex-boyfriend.

Update (Smitty):
Todd: hey, dude, nothing bites like having to sit next to someone who has kicked you to the curb. I don’t know if there will ever be another opportunity as good as this, so this shout is out to you, man:

I had taped the event off Book-TV, watched it yesterday, and was quite puzzled why he said what he said. Throughout the whole thing he came across as a jerk.

I thought she handled the whole thing very well.

Jonah Goldberg stomped on him rather fiercely, but calmly after Seavey did a childish mocking of those who believe in God.

SIDENOTE: I’m even more convinced now that we must storm the ramparts and depose ‘Twinkle Toes’ Lowry. I await your orders, oh Lord of the Road.

That quickly went from mildly humorous (as humorous as a C-Span book forum can get) to a rather public personal trainwreck of Todd Seavey. Gentlemen do not attack ex girlfriends at C-Span book forums. Jonah’s laughing added a strange touch to a very strange event.

I am just glad I was not there…taking acid*. Becuase that scene would have freaked me out.

Helen Rittelmeyer handled it pretty well. She came off as kind of sexy in a conservative wonkette sort of way.

Seavey on the other hand should have a meeting with Rittelmeyer’s brothers (and since she is a Conservative Catholic, I am hoping their are about a dozen of them, although given Seavey demeanor, an aggrived ten year old boy should be able to handle matters sufficiently).

    I second Bob’s motion.

    * not that I am in the habit of taking acid. I am just channelling some fear and loathing on the C-Span circuit.

Oh, I don’t know. I don’t think she comes off on top of this. I’m of the opinion that the guy pretty much eviscerates her, and deservedly so.

By the way, I’m with Bob on storming the ramparts and dumping Rich Lowry. I would also throw on the pyre Jonah Goldberg and pretty much all of the Nancy Boys at National Review. As we head towards the November elections, the whole group has become tedious and intolerably elitist.

More Helen bashing from a group that seems to revel in their public school male bonding and retro British fashion sense.

    That was two things:

1.) The longest I have ever watched any C-span feed
2.) The most entertaining and lively C-span feed I have ever seen.

Having interned with Helen at the National Journalism Center, I’m surprised she let the bitter, misguided Seavey off that lightly. She is one sharp-minded woman capable of laying out and defending the positions she takes.
Seavey is obviously out of his league with her and was waaaay out of line with that tirade.
Helen need not respond further on this subject. Seavey made it pointedly clear that he’s a jerk and she’s a class act.

Men are stupid. Many of us require a civilizing influence, and sometimes it doesn’t take.

You forgot the beginning of that quote: “Women are crazy. Men are stupid.” A deadly combination.

I also DVRed this and watched it later. Seavey came off as a classless jerk.

    Oh, absolutely.

    They need sane influences.

I never NEVER again want to see ANY Headline that ends in the word:

    “Evah!”

    It’s beyond annoying!

    You’re watching CSPAN… After Dark.

I think the way she handled it proves she is, as you say, ‘a class act’, a lady. Also, she showed that she is shrewd by letting Seedy Seavey’s behavior stand alone as naked proof of his immaturity and jerkiness.

You really don’t know what it is you’re defending here, Robert. Neither did I for over a year, though I began slowly to realize after that.

I said so little compared to all that could be said, and one day, if things do not turn out well, many people now defending Helen will realize that. Trust me, your chivalry here is misplaced. Mine led to my comments being as restrained and circumspect as they were. I will leave it at that.

  • Mindinour

I really enjoyed this episode.I admit I was drawn by the “Teapot
Tempest” of Mr. Seavey’s dating history statements. I can understand his chagrin. Ms.Rittelmeyer is Hot! It’s high time that
Conservatives admit that we can be sexy too. Aside from that, I
got some very interesting arguements and info from all the panelists and questioners. Come on for too long we have allowed ourselves to be characterized as dry and sexless. Ideas are sexy too. The woman that said,”..show me your checkbook and{ I’ll know your beliefs(paraphrased)}…” was on the money and very attractive too. We want “hearts and minds” people-gotta get real.

  • ECM

Mr. Seavey, even if every single word you said about the lady was true, it was still highly inappropriate (if admittedly entertaining) for you to act in such a way. I think you should seriously consider counseling.

    -Present your evidence, Mr. Seavey.

-Also, the forum, at which you were a guest, was neither the time nor the place to air your grievances. You were there to promote the book. It especially was unfair to do that to Jonah Goldberg.
