Guns Better Than Gold?

Posted on | August 26, 2011 | 16 Comments

In response to my constant reminders about rising gold prices — You Should Have Listened To Glenn Beck! — Steve in Tennessee sent me a link to this story by Bill Gunderson at Seeking Alpha:

Scared investors have been flocking to gold as our economy, political system, and financial system continue in turmoil. It seems that every other commercial these days on TV or radio is a gold commercial. Gold is not the only investment that is currently seeing panic-like buying, however. Sturm, Ruger (RGR) has been hitting new highs for the last several years. This guns and ammunition stock has outperformed gold by a wide margin, and it currently is not as crowded and as highly publicized as the gold trade.
Consider the following facts. Sturm, Ruger has outperformed Gold over the last 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 3 years, and 5 years! . . .
It is also important to note that Sturm, Ruger was even up in 2008, when the market was down 38.5%.

There was a time, after BO was elected, when we worried that he would outlaw both guns & gold. I don’t think that’s very probable now, not since the TEA Party people have risen up en masse. I don’t think he could get away with that because too many people are now watching him.

Wouldn’t he who has the guns get the gold?

If I understand correctly over the counter bullion trading is now illegal.
This info might be somewhat hyped but here’s a link.

Most of the Gold owned by people isn’t actually in their physical possession. Much of the Gold purchases is in gold producing company stocks

Well, the Ruger stock I own isn’t held by any brokerage or  company…  I shoot ’em regularly!

I remember reading about it at zerohedge at the time. It could the the beginning step, I don’t.  But lots of people are still buying gold as a hedge against the devaluation of the dollar, the same reason Beck buys gold coins. I think if Barry had entertained any thoughts of making the private ownership of gold illegal, without one helluva backlash, he should have done it at the beginning of his administration. Since then, his window of opportunity has closed considerably, maybe even slammed shut.

Guns without ammo are just expensive paperweights.
Ammo is the currency of the future.

The window is wide open, just like the restriction on over the counter sales any other measures in that direction will be done by executive order and the regulation by the appropriate agency. The more likely it becomes that Obama won’t be reelected the more appealing rule by fiat becomes. Depending on their estimate of the electability of whoever wins the Republican nomination will govern their calculations. In other words if they realize the economy will not improve, a foregone conclusion, the more they will realize their last chance for fundamental transformation is slipping away. They have no respect for constitutional processes of the rule of law. The only limit to what they will attempt is what they calculate they can get away with.

Especially since as long as they’ve got 34 Senators, they can’t be impeached.

An impeachment attempt would lead to national state of emergency.

And it doesn’t matter which party they belong to, either. We saw that with Clinton.

If you buy a Ruger, you get a stock.  Or at least, hand grips.
