Storm Center Commander-in-Chief?

Posted on | August 28, 2011 | 19 Comments

So I saw this headline at Memeorandum:

Obama takes charge at hurricane command center

And my natural reaction is, “Ri-iiiight.”

Like he’s being the anti-Bush, scoring some image points by playing against the perception of his predecessor as having bungled Katrina. But what happened in New Orleans in 2005 — a Category 4 storm slamming into a city sitting below sea level, protected by earthen levees — was such a disaster beyond what anyone could have prepared for, the Blame-Bush perception was grossly unfair. Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco clearly were more responsible for the failure to provide for evacuation, et cetera, but they were both Democrats. The media pounced on the Blame-Bush theme and never let up.

Obama? The media are his “enablers,” as Fred Barnes says. And so we get the whole set-piece feature about Obama the Great Commander:

Killed bin Laden. Beat Qaddafi. Kicked a hurricane’s ass. Whatever.

One can only hope, for the sake of those in the hurricane’s path, that brakabama won’t actually be making any decisions about how to handle things, or a whole lot of people are fucked.

I would also like to point out that Katrina came screaming across the Gulf of Mexico in three days flat, but Irene has taken about ten days to make it up to New England.  By that math, then, Obama’s appearance on Day 9 is well behind Bush’s Day 4 appearance.

Remember the Deepwater Horizon oil spill?  Remember how it took forty days to hit land?  Remember how everyone with a functioning brain, but no liberals (but I repeat myself), said that what you can prepare for over the course of forty days is much greater than what you can prepare for over three?

A more proper analogy would be a hurricane slamming into Manhattan on three days’ notice.  We’ll trade “above sea level” for the additional population and call it even.  Does anyone seriously think that if a Cat 4 storm ripped through New York City with three day’s notice that Obama would come out of it smelling like roses?

One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to Martha’s Vineyard.” So they set out, and after a time of much play he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the island, and it was filling with water and they were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

And then Chris Matthews awoke from his dream and saw that Irene was still lashing the East Coast.

Thanks to Obama’s leadership, Irene was downgraded to Cat 1 prior to landfall, thus saving approximately $1 trillion in disaster relief funds.  According to WH aides, this means that there is now a surplus for the 2011 year.  Obama was quick to point out that Bush never ran a surplus.

Katrina was a Cat. 3 with a Cat. 5 equivalent storm surge when it hit Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, not New Orleans. The outer bands swept across NO leaving minor wind damage. If the levees hadn’t failed that’s all the damage NO would have suffered. Katrina went up the middle of Mississippi its entire N-S length and destroyed a third of the state.
It really galls me to read about Katrina slamming into New Orleans when that isn’t what happened. The disaster in NO was entirely man made. It was caused by the incompetence of the city and state leadership, the corruption of the levee board (guess which political party they all represent) and the entitlement mentality of the people in NO.

He got his photo op and in September he’ll use this as an example of why we need big government and obviously “invest” in green energy.
