Late Night With Rule 5 Sunday

I was discussing SF with a friend of mine tonight, and we both agreed that the main problem with Charles Stross’ Laundry novels (wherein MI-6 meets the Great Old Ones) is that there’s too much bizarre and disgusting sex (see Equoid) and not enough sex involving Bob’s rather deadly, musically inclined spouse, Dr. Dominique “Mo” Howard. We agreed that in the movie, it didn’t much matter who plays Bob, but Mo absolutely has to be played by Christina Hendricks. Thus, tonight’s illustration.
As usual, many of the following links lead to pictures normally considered NSFW, so exercise discretion as to when and where you click. Management is not responsible for unfortunate consequences attendant on your lack of discretion.

Thanks to everyone for their linkagery! There simply never is a wrong time for a Christina Hendricks photo.

The main problem with Stross novels is they’re Stross novels.

As a writer type, I wouldn’t be averse to a bit more analysis than that.
At first, I liked The Laundry, but over time it seemed to lose its weirdness. Less math crazy, and more metaphor magic…and I don’t mind metaphor magic, but if you start your system on math, you need to stay three, err, there.

I would also think that the Old Ones were past disgusting sex as that is far too human for them.

They are addictive, aren’t they!

If that holograph was Ms. Hendrick’s dancing, 3CPO’s circuits would explode.

Bob Howard’s atheistic nihilism is starting to get up my nose, but otherwise I’ve enjoyed the stories.

Depends on which GOO. Shub-Niggurath is all about that nasty sex…as a means to control.
March 23rd, 2015 @ 11:34 am
Of course if R2D2 (who is projecting that image off shot) had a Ms. Hendricks dancing holograph…he’d be in his bunk!

I don’t like redneck SF. It’s like Wacky Races compared to Warner Bros. or Are You Being Served compared to Monty Python. An SF TV analogy might be that people like Stross, Scalzi and Leckie write SF that’s like the old Hulk, Wonder Woman and Buck Rogers TV shows. They don’t get it and they shouldn’t be writing it. It’s refrigerator magnet literature. They have no insights or ability to engage in perceptual shifts of any kind. It’s like robots write that shit. It suffuses SF today and it’s so bad I can’t even think of any actual SF writers pre-1975 to compare them to. Even the worst of the old crew were at least actual genre writers, not Saved By the Bell On Mars for adults.

I think Hendricks would be ideal because she has vulnerability, a natural instinct for emoting, a sensitivity and understanding of the role she’s playing and she has really big schmeebs.

I just have one more that I’m going to post when the opportunity presents itself, but the rest will stay at the gallery, because…
March 23rd, 2015 @ 5:36 pm
That’s hypnotic. I just tranced out for a minute.
March 23rd, 2015 @ 7:07 pm
You think that’s redneck SF? I’m guessing you haven’t read Ringo, or Kratman….
March 23rd, 2015 @ 7:10 pm
I have it on good authority that Christina Hendricks has gone over to…the Light Side. She’s now a blonde.
March 23rd, 2015 @ 8:05 pm
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…
March 23rd, 2015 @ 8:34 pm
They go on into infinity (or at least it seemed that way).

The extinction event for Gingers has begun!

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I’m having a hard time figuring out how Stross’ writing can in any way be defined as “redneck SF”.
March 23rd, 2015 @ 10:32 pm
I just explained it. Some doof once rewrote William Hope Hodgson’s The Nightland because he “got it.” Stross re-writes genre SF. It’s like taking all those naughty weird words in Clark Ashton Smith or Jack Vance and combing them out til smooth. Stross is the burnished embossed leather cowboy hat with embossed of SF. If he’d gone to high school in America he’d have been a quarterback named Wizzy Wyatt. Stross doesn’t write satire, he is satire.

The issue is whether they themselves pretend or think otherwise. It’s a matter of lack of awareness. Do you think Michael Crichton thought he was Heinlein when he wrote Sphere or just another episode of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea with Home Shopping Network shiny bells on?
March 23rd, 2015 @ 11:23 pm
That too, but I meant it more in the sense that even if they’re funny, most set such a high bar of outrageousness that it’s prohibitively difficult for them to meet a [funny > outrageous] posting standard.
