A Democratic Convention without McCaskill is like a circus without cotton candy. But even the head of the DCCC is advising members in potentially competitive seats that “Charlotte might be a nice trip, but why leave your districts?” They can’t even raise enough money for it – they already cut it back from 4 days to 3, with the excuse they would have a gala kick-off and welcoming party at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. But a combination of financing and the prospect of lots of empty seats in that big arena have even nixed that.
Yeah, the Democrats are lagging in money as incumbents in the White House and Senate because they are doing so well. House candidates and McCaskill are avoiding the Convention because Obama is such a great candidate. Uh-huh.
Even with redrawn lines, the meat of Rangel’s district was once Adam Clayton Powell’s. He was rather open about cashing in, and complained the attention was just because he wasn’t rich enough to hide his gratuities like most. Congress finally expelled him, and a couple of months later, his district sent him back in a landslide.
I have to respect the guy, though, he didn’t try to sneak around it and he wasn’t shy about speaking his mind. When challenged as to how his district voted for him after his corruption expulsion, he answered, “In Harlem growing up, the only thing people could afford was the Saturday afternoon matinee double feature. And what did the hero of all those westerns look like? Handsome, light skin, thin lips, curly hair, mustache – man, that’s gotta be Adam Clayton Powell!”
Rangel is his worthy heir.
Hatch won 2-1. Told ya.
