I’m not sure when I first heard of Jayne Mansfield; the first time I remember seeing her that stuck in my mind is the famous picture of her with Sophia Loren in a restaurant, of which Loren later said, “I was worried that her breasts were going to explode out of that dress and go right in the soup.”
She had quite a career in the late 50s and early 60s as one of the early Playboy Playmates, a star on Broadway and in Hollywood, and a celebrity notorious for controversy and publicity stunts. She died at the age of 34 in a horrendous semi-trailer crash on Highway 90 east of the Rigolets Bridge in Louisiana, which gave rise to the safety device known as a Mansfield bar.
