New York vs. Chicago: If Charlie Rangel Resigns, Will Hillary Clinton Be Next?

Posted on | July 31, 2010 | 11 Comments

Obama suggests it is time for Charlie Rangel to end his career with “dignity,” which prompts some musings by my friend Bob Engstrom:

New York is the home of Hillary Clinton and the state invested heavily in her 2008 run. Grudges between the New York and Chicago factions run deep over Obama’s DNC convention victory over Clinton. New York, along with the rest of the country, is awakening to the reality that with a flat economic recovery, the Wall Street financial reforms, high unemployment, the pending health care plan and looming tax hikes cannot be sustained by the country. . . .
Expect Rangel’s resignation from the House of Representatives prior to the start of trial proceedings and Hillary Clinton’s resignation as Secretary of State next year. She’s got a campaign to win, and her fight is not overseas. It is a conundrum for the Republicans. They have yet to find a candidate who might defeat Clinton in 2012.

The possibility of Hillary Clinton mounting a primary challenge to Obama in 2012 is still a long shot — perhaps wishful thinking by Republicans — but the failure of Obamanomics definitely creates an opportunity. However, when Bob says Republicans “have yet to find a candidate who might defeat Clinton in 2012,” surely he underrates Sarah Palin and her 2 million Facebook followers.

There’s no chance Hillary runs against Obama.

Bet on Obama’s challenge to come from Howard Dean, who will draw enough of those progressives away to form the 2012 Quixote Brigade of Failure.
