Delaware Castle Under Siege

by Smitty

Via the ever-detailed Swing State Project, a lefty blog that gives good detail, Hotline On Call reports of Mike Castle:

The Republican has purchased $113K worth of airtime before the primary.

Castle is facing off against Christine O’Donnell on Sept. 14 in the GOP primary for Delaware’s open Senate seat.

. . .

The buy shows that Castle isn’t leaving anything to chance. O’Donnell was initially written off as a long-shot outsider candidate, but she is backed by the Tea Party Express — the same group that was behind Joe Miller’s surprise upset of Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) in AK last week.

The Tea Party Express is preparing to wade into the primary in these final two weeks. The Hill reported earlier this week that the group plans to spend six figures on behalf of O’Donnell.

Castle is a favorite of the GOP establishment, which believes it has a very good shot at picking up Vice Pres. Joe Biden’s former Senate seat.

So, Castle fortifies the citadel of his old and tired GOP campaign, to keep the new hotness from endangering his Ruling Class château.
Best wishes on that, Mike.

Update: Yeah, we prefer Malkin’s opinion to Ace’s on this one.

Update II: So I finally got to Ace in the RSS reader, and actually read the Politico article and couldn’t be less impressed with any of it.
What will be interesting in two weeks will be seeing whether the loser of the race gives us the Full Murkowski.

I guess there’s no use in mentioning that Christine O’Donnell’s paid consultants are out making completely false claims that Castle is going to switch to D after he wins, and that he is gay: http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0910/ODonnell_backer_makes_sex_charge_in_Delaware_race.html?showall.

Sometimes old and tired is better than alone and outside. Go Castle!

    @JR,
In the former case why would anyone switch to D? Because it worked so well for Specter?
In the latter case, why is anyone’s sexuality important? This is politics, not a hormone swap.
Thirdly, Politico is not the most reputable source for much of anything.

I have given to pretty much every Republican insurgent Senate candidate this cycle, but I am totally not sold on O’Donnell– she seems like a flake (as Ace notes) and Del. is not the state, strategically to make an aggressive play to the right, unless you have the per.fect candidate. O’Donnell is not that candidate.

I’d rather have a RINO from a liberal state voting for DeMint for Majority leader than have another Dem in the Senate.

I’m with Ace on this one. Delaware is not the state, now is not the time and Christine O’Donnell is not the candidate.

Besides which, Castle is going to win.

Read NOT Ace but this excellent analysis by Nate Silver (of FiveThirtyEight blog which has now moved to NY Times) on the Tea Party targets, and has some sage advice… to the Democrats!

But if Democrats are looking for examples of which incumbents to challenge in future election cycles, the Tea Party has just provided them with a couple of good ones.

Now just don’t make a fool of yourselves.

Smitty, I’m siding with Ace on this one. Let’s bring blue to purple before purple to red. O’Donnell, as much as I agree with her, is unelectable. I’d rather have a soft (R) than a hard (D).

No surprise that you lost Allahpundit.

The surprise would be if you had him.

I do not disagree with the theory, which goes back to the real godfather, WFB, Jr., and his vote for the most conservative candidate who can win. The question is can Christine win in Deleware. If she can, and she is the most conservative candidate, vote for her. If not, vote Castle (who granted is weak but still better than letting Delaware be a blue Senate seat).

But seems to me Delaware Republicans know this. I can only go by what I have heard from Smitty and Stacy that O’Donnell is a quality candidate. But I am not a Delaware voter. Just like Arizona Republicans knew that Hayworth was not the answer to a weak John McCain. And Alaska voters knew Miller was the right answer to Murkowski.

So Delaware Republicans, you know better than most of us on who can win and who cannot. Weigh the risk benefit and do the right thing.

Amid all the reports of paranoid nuttiness – which don’t dissuade the nut brigade at all, of course – remains a glaring truth: if her campaign is paying for her living quarters, she may be violating federal law.

The laws don’t mean much either to the likes of Hayworth backers, but some still think they matter.

Castle, OTOH, is definitely a RINO. But it is just plain STUPID to claim there is “no difference” between him and electing a Democrat. Castle’s lifetime ACU rating is 57, which puts him in Snowe/Collins territory. Not great, but he will vote with us more than half the time, and on most issues the Party deems critical.

The Democrat would vote against us 90%+ of the time.

If that is “no difference” to you, you need to go back to 2nd Grade Arithmetic and start over.

There is a word for someone who demands ideological purity over victory: “loser.”

I do not know if O’Donnell accused Castle of anything. I just know someone did, and this could be done to attempt to discredit O’Donnell as much as Castle.

My concern is can she reasonably win the general. If yes, and you like her, vote for her. If not, then RINO Castle is better than the Dem. I am not happy about that, but Delaware is kinda weirdly blue.

It is sort of like betting on roulette. Stacy can tell you how that works. Playing the odds and trends and all. He has a system.

I wonder if perhaps we are going “one new hotness too far on this one”. On the other hand Castle reeks of RINO, as a wise commenter once said sometimes you get to pick the hill you die on.
The problem with RINO’s is that one has to humor them after they betray all that decccent in the world, or put another way after they compromise and vote with the Social Democrats. Having to defer to Quislings on the off chance they won’t betray humanity the next time rots the soul.

It’s worth keeping in mind that a number of well-connected people in Delaware have hinted to friends that Castle might switch parties after the election — in which case every conservative argument about voting for him to help Republicans win a majority falls flat.
