Democrat Supporter Says Romney ‘Masquerading as a Die-Hard Conservative’

The Puffington Host has a simply incredible piece up about Mitt, featuring Rocky Anderson:
One of Mitt Romney’s oldest Democratic supporters says the Republican presidential contender is a “warm” and “decent” person who is only masquerading as a die-hard conservative to win the Republican nomination.
“Obviously the positions that Mitt’s taking now are different than the positions he did when he ran for and served as Governor of Massachusetts,” Rocky Anderson, the former mayor of Salt Lake City, told HuffPost. “His handlers got to him and said, ‘This is what you need to do.’ And that’s what he’s doing to get elected.”
Are we to believe Romney is some Bullwinke, saying “Hey Rocky, watch me pull a nomination out of my hat!”?
BHO has pretty well destroyed any need for consistency from politicians, so maybe being on all sides of every major issue is a boon to Mitt.

Seriously. Does anybody under the sun believe that Mitt Romney is a conservative?
If there is such a person then I want to give that person a prize. That sort of obliviousness needs to be rewarded!
November 3rd, 2011 @ 8:16 am
Of course, being conservative is not a binary thing. Is Romney more conservative than Obama?
That’s the wrong question. Is today’s Romney? What about tomorrow’s Romney? Or three years from now Romney?
The answer to all of those is yes. But those are general election questions, not primary questions.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 8:44 am
Of course, with the ongoing self-immolation of the Herman Cain campaign, the likelihood becomes even higher that Mitt Romney will become the Republican nominee. I really don’t see an end-game here. We are all so busy tearing each other apart that the Jug-Eared Fuck, who is a Stuttering Clusterfuck of a Miserable Failure. spends yet ANOTHER 3 news-cycles completely out of the spotlight. Instead of juxtaposing JEF’s support for the OWS crowd with the rioting in Oakland, we are more concerned about whether Romney or Perry is the one who ratted out Cain.
Really, there has GOT to be a better way to do this. We should be able to discuss the differences among the candidates while keeping the pressure on the JEF and without committing mass suicide in the process of the primary selection.
Well, I can dream, can’t I.

Only Bruce Willis is a true ‘Die Hard’ Conservative!
November 3rd, 2011 @ 9:27 am
Cain is only a fiscal conservative anyway, and that’s debatable. He’s not really a social conservative at all, clearly, and when it comes to national security issues he doesn’t know what the hell he is himself. I’m telling you people, if you want to stop Romney, and you want a real conservative, you need to get behind Bachmann, who would tear Obama apart in a debate, and maybe literally, which would be fucking fine with me. And Newt would be the perfect running mate for her, as he would be the perfect bridge gap between the social conservative base and the establishment GOP. Now think about Newt in a debate with Joe Biden and tell me how you think THAT would turn out.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 9:39 am
I’m curious about what you mean about him not being a social conservative.
I think the original abortion thing was a case of poor communication. The most convincing thing to me were his remarks about Sanger.
One issue I have with a lot of self described social conservatives is that they do not make a distinction about what they believe to be right and what they think the government’s role should be.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 9:41 am
It’s possible, at least in my head, to be socially conservative internally and libertarian externally.
And by that I mean, completely ‘boring’ in the personal life, yet disinterested in living a theocracy.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 9:51 am
Yes, and those who are not demonstrate one way that the progressive, totalitarian impulses make inroads on the right.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 10:09 am
Romney’s a die-hard conservative compared to his co-religionist.
If The One dumps Biden for Huntsman, you heard it here first.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 10:25 am
I don’t see that at all. They are two peas in a pod when it comes to Global Climate Change, and probably gay civil unions, but Huntsman is better on the 2nd Amendment, and while I’m not sure exactly what his stance is on the role of government in health care, it certainly couldn’t possibly be any worse than Romney’s. People don’t like Huntsman because he joined Obama’s Administration, I get that, and I concur, but on balance to say he is more liberal than Mitt is just inaccurate.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 10:39 am
They should both oppose Obama in the primary.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 11:09 am
scarymatt, the problem is that he’s not enough more conservative to actually solve the country’s problems, but that R he flies as false colors is all that’s needed for the socialists to scream “bi-partisan!!??!!!eleventy! Republican policies!!!!!” and escape the blame when we go over the cliff at 80 instead of 120.
Sorry, I’m with Abe Lincoln: anyone supporting ORomney should move to a place where “they can take their despotism pure”.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 11:14 am
I don’t really disagree with you at all. You just framed the question more properly for the primary, which was kinda my point.
Either way, while he sorta sounds reasonable in the primary, his record says that he’s most likely just pandering to the primary audience.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 11:49 am
Being a conservative isn’t a binary only to point. If “true” conservative is conservative on all three legs of the conservative stool. One might be “kinda” conservative on a few things but there really isn’t an such thing as being kinda conservative, Romney isn’t even that at best he’s a moderate. One could argue that’s worse than being a liberal.

November 3rd, 2011 @ 11:58 am
He said it should be up to a woman and her doctor, it seemed pretty clear to me. You can get the same answer from any Democrat. I have some questions about his 2nd Amendment stance as well, which is a core issue to me. Sorry, but when somebody is weak on the 2nd Amendment that puts him squarely south of Jon Huntsman. It’s that important to me. I think he’s a federalist on the issue, and that’s unacceptable. The 2nd Amendment is not a states rights issue any more than freedom of speech or religion is.
November 3rd, 2011 @ 11:59 am
Somebody should, that’s for sure. I wonder if Ralph Nader has had any luck finding anybody to potentially run against him.

Mitt reminds me of Obama in a way. In 2008, everyone who wasn’t paying close attention thought Obama agreed with them on most issues. After assuming office he started showing people what he stood for.
“I serve as a blank screen,” Obama writes, “on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views.” He notifies readers that “my treatment of the issues is often partial and incomplete.” (The Audacity of Hope)
I expect most will learn the same lesson if Mitt is elected. I just honestly wonder which side he is running the scam on. . .
November 3rd, 2011 @ 12:45 pm
We all knew this four years ago.
Romney is a fraud, and it’s a sad commentary that he thinks he could gain the Republican nomination with his track record.
Yet it now has to be said that he’s not out there blowing himself up in the debates like Perry, nor out there botching accusations of sexual harassment, nor has he like Michelle Bachmann launched baseless, reckless, irresponsible accusations against a fellow candidate all because she was bitter that the candidate in question announced his candidacy after her irrelevant straw poll victory, nor has Romney the smart-alec demeanor of Santorum, which drives potential supporters away, nor has Romney’s campaign blown up on him like Gingrich.
So it’s a dead certainty that Romney is a fraud who by refusing to destroy his own candidacy like the others is likely to win the nomination in a walk.
Right now I’d prefer to see the nomination decided at the Convention.
That would have to be a better selection process than what’s going on now.

November 3rd, 2011 @ 8:47 pm
Like it or not, we’re going to get Romney, paired with either T-Paw or Gov. Fatass from New Jersey. The same Cocktail Party GOP crowd which destroyed Sarah Palin and I believe was behind the Rick Perry rock story and the smear of Herman Cain is playing the same role for 2012 as the Black Sox of 1919. They threw the World Series; the Cocktail Party GOP is throwing the election.
Fearful of having to run an actual campaign against a Halfrican American, they’d just as soon see a real black man destroyed because he is a conservative. They’d just as soon lose so they can put up Gov. Fatass in 2016.
Chalk up one conservative woman and one conservative black man destroyed by the country-club Republicans. Can’t have them get too uppity now, can we? We’d rather apologize and play defense when the other side calls us racist and sexist.
