Who Tipped BuzzFeed About Weiner’s Cyber-Girlfriend Sydney Leathers?

My friend Donald Douglas this morning was rather shocked at how quickly I jumped onto the Sydney Leathers story, but I explained on Twitter what I said on the blog Tuesday night: Before I ever heard of Sydney Leathers, the BuzzFeed article was already a banner headline at Drudge, so there wasn’t really anything left to debate. Certainly I wasn’t “outing” her. Ezra Dulis at Big Journalism was all “[redacted] this” and “[redacted] that,” as if ignoring the news could make it less newsworthy, but the news business just doesn’t work that way.

What I added to the story — on the basis of tips from a keen-eyed Twitter buddy — was that (a) Sydney Leathers is a former Obama campaign worker and (b) Sydney Leathers authored a 2011 petition that condemned Sarah Palin for “inciting violence.” That’s news.

If anyone wants to criticize BuzzFeed, they ought to ask: Where did they get the ID of Sydney Leathers? Was this just  a case of clever “investigative journalism” or was it — as I strongly suspect — the result of a tip from a source allied with Team Weiner?

This is not to say, however, that BuzzFeed should not have run with the story once they got that tip. Once you know somebody is shopping around that kind of info, you’re confronted with a kind of devil’s dilemma: “If I don’t take this scoop, somebody else will.”

Such dilemmas occur all the time in political reporting, where people with obvious motives offer you oppo-research materials.

Do you really want to turn up your nose at the offered dossier, knowing that if you do, you’ll probably find it reported in all its tawdry glory somewhere else? Remember that in 2008, there were reporters for major news organizations who knew about the reports of John Edwards’ extramarital affair, but wrongly dismissed them as “tabloid gossip.”

I’ve got a particular interest in the question of who ID’d Sydney Leathers because, for months, Ladd Ehlinger Jr. has entertained the possibility that the harassment of Brett Kimberlin’s enemies was somehow being funded by supporters of Anthony Weiner.

Speculation isn’t my business, but when you observe extraordinary behavior, you can’t preemptively rule out extraordinary motives.

One of the bloggers who did the most damage to Anthony Weiner during the 2011 scandal was Patterico who — just coincidentally, FYI — was also a target of relentless harassment by the obscure alliance of forces that we call Team Kimberlin. Today, Patterico returns to the saga with a devastating timeline of how Weiner’s enablers made this latest scandal possible, and don’t miss this:

And, disturbingly for a guy who was talking about “cape and tights” to a high school girl in Delaware — a grooming line he had used with an adult woman with whom he had sexted — Weiner asks Sydney Leathers if her “pussy” is “smooth” . . .

Oh, my goodness. That seems rather weird, eh?

And while the New York Times sees a pattern, they apparently can’t be bothered to notice that pattern.

Do we know anyone else reputed to have a similar interest in young girls? Seems to ring a bell for some reason . . .

UPDATE: Linked at American Power — thanks! — and welcome, Instapundit readers! Since this involves a mass readership who may be unfamiliar with the background to which I’ve alluded, let me briefly rehash what regular readers of this blog already know:

The seeming convergence of (a) Brett Kimberlin’s Enemies List and (b) a number of bloggers — including Ace of Spades and Lee Stranahan — who had written about WeinerGate could be explained as entirely coincidental. But there were reports that Team Weiner, in planning his political comeback effort, had engaged the services of various lawyers, researchers and consultants. Those of us who know how politics works behind the scenes are well aware that money is fungible: If Politician W hires Consulting Firm X for $20,000, this firm may then hire Freelance Researcher Y for $5,000 and Internet Operative Z for $3,000 on a basis of confidentiality, so that the activities of Y and Z cannot be traced to X, and Politician W then has clean hands (and plausible deniability) if Y and Z get caught red-handed.

Also: Progressives into young girls? Probably just a coincidence.

Ladd Ehlinger, Jr. Hanging It Up?

by Smitty

The latest Ladd Ehlinger continues to delight:

It’s with sadness that I read his retirement post there. His edgy work put a great deal of zip into the often boring political discourse, while keeping it rational. Unfortunately, it sounds like the effort to make things boring and predictable has filtered out true creative genius. This is a shame. Ladd has probably forgotten more about the craft of making a movie than I know.

Vessels For Altering The American Political Course

by Smitty

When the history of the American recovery is written, Ladd Ehlinger will certainly have a paragraph or five, given his highly refined anti-establishment antics.

Leapfrogging the traditional approach to political ads is Turn This Ship Around, which is a basic ad memorable for its images of children as galley slaves of a piratical state. TTSA is a ‘reduce, reuse, recycle‘ approach, most lately in support of Brian K. Hill, running for Senate in Connecticut.

“Some establishment pundits say Republicans shouldn’t go after Obama because he has personal favorability in some polls,” says Brad Marston, co-founder of the political strategy firm FourTier Strategies, one of the participating vendors in the concept. “Hogwash. Our job is to change the polls, not cower in fear from them. Don’t just take a poll and then throw up your hands. Polling is just part of the initial research. Then you devise a strategy to win.”
“This is what the RNC, NRCC, and the NRSC should be doing,” said Furniss. “They should be experimenting, helping to figure out ways for their candidates to advertise more cost-effectively against Obama and George Soros and other rich Democrats.”
“Why aren’t the guys in D.C. offering asymmetrical advertising for their candidates?” asked Ehlinger. “Most GOP marketers couldn’t promote their way out of a wet paper bag.”

I think it’s worse. Judging by the behavior, the senior GOP weenies would rather run aground on a cruise liner captained by a derelict Italian than risk sailing to victory with Tea Partiers. Why? Because GOP weenies, like any specimen of homo bureaucratus fear risk, and know that the Democrats will give them a bowl to lick if they accept defeat with minimal fuss.

Responsible Elite In ‘A Face In The Crowd’

by Smitty

At the suggestion of Ladd Ehlinger, I took in A Face in the Crowd, a 1957 Kazan flick that is well worth your time. ‘Lonesome’ Rhodes goes from nowhere to national stardom. Andy Griffith is powerful as an Icarian pop culture icon.
The documentary on the DVD includes a couple of interesting quotes from the writer and director:

  • Schulberg: “This movie was really meant as kind of a warning that, with the phenomenon of television, that politics would never be the same.”
  • Kazan, attributed: “There is a cost for everything.”

However, what piqued my interest was the General Haynesworth character. He says, starting at 53:06:

My study of history has convinced me that every strong and healthy society from from the Egyptians on, the mass had to be guided with a strong hand by a responsible elite.

Mention of ‘the mass’ recalls The Crowd, by Gustave Le Bon, a serious study of crowd psychology. Basically, information diffuses poorly in a wad of people. If you’re at a Lady GaGa concert, rumors about whether she will perform the next song dressed in fresh beef cuts, or in a huge flour tortilla worn as a toga, won’t cross the music hall very well. When she comes out on stage, the TV screen will move that crucial information instantly. That’s the difference at which Schulberg was getting.YouTube amplifies the point:

But the crowd has an aggregate pulse, as the information-deprived individuals repeat this or that rumor, or YouTube clips go viral. The beef cuts on Lady GaGa become three strategically placed young baboons, which may or may not be real. Charismatic people like the Lonesome Rhodes character can tap into that aggregate pulse of the crowd, and ride it to fame. Stacy McCain wondered aloud if Huey Long was an inspiration for the Rhodes character, but Wikipedia cites other entertainment names as inspirations. Amusingly, according to IMDB, sombody named Keith Olbermann likes to refer to Glenn Beck as Lonesome Rhodes.

What about this ‘responsible elite’? No less a figure than Jesus of Nazareth noted For the poor always ye have with you. . .. In other words, there will always be poor, rich, and quite a few in between. There is going to be a distribution of wealth, irrespective of whether the Inner Party uses propaganda to reduce everyone else to poverty (while proclaiming wealth), or not.

The thing that matters, if you’ll allow me something like a Gaussian Distribution of wealth, is that there is a current circulating within the distribution. The simple fact of inequality in wealth distribution is neither evil nor escapable. Money cannot be evenly distributed any more than information in a crowd. That there is wealth movement within that distribution, and that people have liberty to move as much or as little as desired, is crucial. There will be a figure in a burqa doing the next song. Lady GaGa, or not?

And so Lonesome Rhodes has a metorotic rise. Talent and opportunity, along with a soulless media machine, propel him to vast heights. Yet Rhodes lacks the maturity and perspective to handle it. The same figure who casually mentions Grand Theft Auto at the beginning of the movie, who uses women cruelly throughout, never grasps that he is the very thing he despises. To ride the meteor successfully requires a strong internal commitment to something both good and external, where the soul is regularly taken for trimming. Rhodes tries using whiskey, but the whiskey uses him instead. For a worked example of my point, take a tour of Graceland and ask whether Elvis handled the fame well, or did his head ‘splode? Would you date Lady GaGa?

Is Glenn Beck a Lonesome Rhodes figure? Beck seems more in touch with the nature of human evil, including the internal portion. Does he constitute a member of a ‘responsible elite’? In the movie, the General seemed more of an oligarch, delegating the messy work of dealing with the mass to Rhodes. No, Beck wants everyone to do the homework, and move as far in the direction of the elite tail of the income distribution as they care to go. This notion of capitalistic opportunity and movement within the income distribution according to merit is an important facet of American Exceptionalism. Lady GaGa is probably not the Postmodern Rhodes, but I’m confident I’ll never know for sure, as my interest really does not extend past a running gag in a blog post.

Dan Riehl might actually find himself agreeing with Keith Olbermann’s point about Glenn Beck.

Doubling Down On Ehlinger’s Argument

by Smitty

Emphasis mine:

Quit wasting your time and the country’s time trolling Teh Algorez Internetz trying to find the next Presidential messiah. Figure out who your Reps are, figure out if they are worthy of your support or opposition. Your country needs them and you to focus on what’s important.
And no b.s. carping on how you’re in a deep blue district and it’s not possible to win. Fight collectivists where you live first before turning into a zealot over a primary contest on the other side of the country. Remember Barney Frank? Bielat fought the crap out of him in 2010. Sure, Barney won, but it was Bielat and the voters who were vindicated yesterday, when Frank declined to run in 2012.

Ladd stopped by for breakfast here in Northern Virginia a couple weeks back while driving homeward. The Eighth District of Virginia is pretty much George Washington’s back yard. And yet, in our era of Progressivism, the imperial Federal Government has resulted in ‘Gentleman’ Jim Moran, he of the 90 stock swaps the day after the 2008 financial crisis briefing to Congress. How can any self respecting, legitimate American fail to support Patrick Murray, even in the face of the worst odds since Washington took on the British Army?

Go long. Go for incremental victories. I hope at the very least to see Ladd do an advertisement in support of Murray’s repeat campaign.
MORAN DELENDA EST. Support Patrick Murray:

The ‘Sarah Palin Reconsider’ Clip

by Smitty

Via Michelle Malkin, here is the mighty Sarah Palin ad, which appears to have been uploaded on 22 November. I am sure that Ladd Ehlinger could have done something with a bit more zip to it. This appears to be a straight up the middle play. On the one hand, this egalitarian statement is what America in general, and Sarah Palin in particular, are all about: get the substance right, and understand that the anti-elitism is a style of its own.

That said, my newfound irritation with Romney’s diction helps me understand where some people are coming from about Sarah’s tone and accent. The fact that my mother (who lives in Idaho) could do passable voiceovers for Sarah (who is from Idaho) does mitigate a lot of the distraction for me, but this clip puts Sarah’s folksy cadences right out front.

I’d still love to see her on the ticket. Unsure with whom, though. Oh to be the fly on the wall when the GOP delegates look at the primary returns and realize that, no matter her conditions, they should have coaxed her into running.

Small Arms May Stop Spread Of Tuberculosis At #OccupyObamaVilles

by Smitty

Ladd Ehlinger seems surprised that anarchy, poor sanitation, and the onset of winter can lead to outbreaks of diseases like tuberculosis.

I disagree with those who said the Occupy movement was doomed at the first sign of winter. This is because I have never seen it as a grass-roots movement, but one cooked up by Obama’s OFA organization, in collusion with Anonymous and Lulzec members, and funded by all the usual suspects, including Soros. The reasons for the cooking had little to do with today’s politics, but the 2012 election, and scaring the bejesus out of soccer moms inclined to vote Republican.
Now an unlikely enemy has arrived to lay waste to these plans, the super-tuberculosis bug. Lie down with dogs, get fleas; lie down with Occupiers, and get both fleas and a disease that can’t be cured and may well kill you.

Via Althouse, there is also Zuccotti Lung, as this blog raises awareness of recent advances in our respiratory tract sickness choices.

These public health concerns may be mitigated somewhat by what seems to be a rash of shootings at ObamaVilles around the country. I was just wondering out loud on Twitter if the gun violence might not be a backup plan for the collapse of Fast & Furious. The American people must somehow be made to accept that the 2nd Amendment is as moot as the 10th Amendment if we are to reach the next stage of Holy Progress. Is it possible that the shooting victim in Oakland was a poet named Horst Wessel?

Is this all part of some grand scheme masterminded by #OccupyResoluteDesk? If so, then liberty-loving Americans must ponder, harden their resolve, and let their peaceful, patriotic actions answer the mail on this sad, creepy #Occupy movement.

Patrick Murray Delivers The Best News I’ve Had All Week

by Smitty

As hoped, Patrick Murray rides again, in the effort to Retire ‘Gentleman’ Jim Moran. From his 10 November email announcement:

Today I’m announcing my candidacy for US Congress in the 8th Congressional District of Virginia. This decision to run for a second time took much soul-searching, thought and prayer. Campaigns are a crucible, but, just as with my military service, this is a matter of duty for me. If I thought our nation was on the right track, that we had leaders who were governing with the Constitution and our children in mind, that we were secure and prosperous, then I would happily pursue other goals.

Also:

In 2010 when I ran, I started at ground zero, freshly out of the Army with no campaign experience, no name recognition and only a handful of supporters. Well, I’m very proud of what we accomplished; over 72,000 people voted for me, we raised a substantial amount of money, and we had legions of energetic volunteers out knocking doors, making phone calls, putting out signs and stuffing envelopes. Now we have that firm foundation to stand upon, and redistricting should also help our side. Combine all of that with Party backing and a dynamic, professional campaign team with national experience and a solid record of winning difficult races in tough Districts and we are light years ahead of where we were last time.

Now, VA-8 has got to be among the toughest districts in the country. ‘Gentleman’ Jim is not only among the senior Democrat wealth redistributors, but the district itself is infested by a high concentration of senior federal bureaucrats who

  • know on which side their bread is buttered, and
  • know that the butter in question was re-distributed from a cow in mooing in a distant pasture.

Homo bureaucratus, while typically a beta (fe)male, and rarely given to anything that could be mistaken for personal courage, can be seen gathering in vast, neck-tie wearing herds for acts of passive aggression against the private sector. Like supporting Moran.

Thus, it is crucial for all right-thinking, traditional Americans to rally around candidates of the caliber of Murray. Even those living in Princess Nancy Pelosi’s, or Princess Barney Franks’s districts need to support viable candidates, and make the Democrat cretins feel the heat. This has the effect of tying up resources, and indirectly supporting American candidates in other districts.

Anybody can wax enthusiastic when the going is easy. However, the recovery from Progressivism is only in its early stages. So this blog rejoices in having a courageous leader like Murray to support. Hopefully we’ll do a better job of getting Ladd Ehlinger on scene to liven up matters this time around.

Update: linked at Zilla of the Resistance. Indeed, happy Veteran’s Day. Want to make a Vet happy? Help drive the Commies out of our government.

Update II: ‘Gentleman’ Jim Moran, who famously doesn’t think military people are public servants still wants the military to think that he holds them in some esteem:

Today we recognize our nation’s veterans, the men and women who have given their time, risked their safety, and in some cases lost their lives in service to our country. Regardless of your position on past and present military operations, we owe a great deal of thanks to those willing to put on the uniform of the United States Military.

If you would really like to thank a veteran, ‘Gentleman’ Jim, what you can do is retire. About the only thing more important than separating you from levers of power, Mr. Moran, is ousting your buddy, #OccupyResoluteDesk.

Update III: via Insty, Kimberley Strassel has more good news about the Virginia political scene.

Update IV: Formal armistice with Paco, and concurrence on the Murray candidacy. My point on the fashion habits of homo bureaucratus seems to stand.

Update V: Now a Memeorandum thread.
