Dave Weigel Sells Out

Posted on | March 22, 2010 | 18 Comments

Guess he’s probably alreadly untagged all those Facebook photos of us hanging out together, eh? Don’t worry, Dave. Your secret is safe with me.

Of course, if the Washington Post was going to hire someone to cover conservatives, you knew they had to hire somebody who despises conservatives. And Dave’s never made a secret of that.

So congratulations to my close personal friend David Weigel on exchanging his integrity for Old Media cash. As a greedy capitalist, I’m all in favor of people peddling their asses to the highest bidder.

The key to getting that kind of deal, of course, is being able to convince the suckers you have “principles” and “ethics” and stuff, because the secret of success is sincerity. Once you learn to fake that, the rest is easy.

    Wishful thinking?

My first quick reading of this sentance was:

When I asked Merida if the Post might hire another blogger to cover politics on the left and the activist wing of the Democratic Party, he responded: “Stacy’s cool Stay tuned.”

Now wouldn’t that be fun! It is nice to dream.

Summed up by Roger Waters. This is actually suitable when referring to most political figures these days..

You got to be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes and when you’re on the street
You got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking

And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You’ll get the chance to put the knife in

Maybe he’ll learn to use proper grammar……but I doubt it.

I love this ending to the Politico story:

When I asked Merida if the Post might hire another blogger to cover politics on the left and the activist wing of the Democratic Party, he responded: “Stay tuned.”

Um, isn’t that most of the coverage in the Washington Post now?

Okay — totally lost here. As a random outside reader who doesn’t know zip about all the inside-baseball on personal feelings, I thought Weigel was a solid writer from a libertarian perspective.

So is the zing in the blog post directed at the idea that WaPo hired a libertarian to report on conservative views, instead of a conservative? When I think libertarian views, I think Gillespie, and for conservative, I think Derbyshire. So in my little view of things, I could see angst at a libertarian reporting on conservativism, if he in fact is a radical libertarian, and not a libertarian conservative.

From his writing, he seems quite far from a radical libertarian.

By the way, I hate labels.

Chuck, Weigel is a left libertarian, emphasis on the “left” and not on the “libertarian.” His writing at “Reason” was one of the “reasons” I stopped subscribing. Expect more of the standard WaPo agenda from him.

@William – yes, WaPo having a correspondent covering liberalism is analogous to performing a testicular self-exam.

Except in WaPo’s case, none were found.

    I’m just saying…
