‘Folks Says He Lied to His Wife’

Posted on | June 10, 2010 | 14 Comments

Ben Smith buried the lede in his profile of Will Folks:

Folks says he was haunted by fear that the story of their affair would emerge after the Free Times, a local alternative weekly, attempted to report out Statehouse scuttlebutt on the subject.
Folks says he lied to his wife about the relationship with Haley and told her only the Saturday before the claim became public. He says he panicked, and . . . posted his confession.
But while rumors were flying around Columbia, there’s little evidence that a revelation was imminent.
“Nobody would have printed anything,” said O’Connor.
“I felt that I was confronted with a situation that I couldn’t get out of,” Folks said.

Will Folks is a liar. Period. And it doesn’t matter whether he lied in previously denying an affair or whether he’s lying with his “confession” now.

He may be lying about both. That’s who he is. That’s what he does. And no one can ever trust him again.

UPDATE: Brian O’Connell at Red Dog Report says the whole point of Will Folks’ “confession” was to drive up his web traffic and notes that Folks is now boasting that his monthly traffic will exceed one million visitors. That’s a lot for any site. For a site that only blogs about South Carolina politics, it’s huge, and Folks is laughing all the way to the bank with this vicious little smear.

Aleister at American Glob compares Will Folks to Larry Sinclair, who in 2008 claimed to have had a gay affair with Barack Obama in 1998. Guess which major mainstream media reported on Sinclair’s allegation. If your guess was “none,” you’re a winner!

And the Lexington County, S.C., Republican Party has voted to censure and call for the resignation of state Sen. Jake Knotts, who called Nikki Haley a “f–king raghead.”

Folks lied to everybody. At least now he is admitting to some of it.

The whole Haley Affair Story was just about hit count; http://reddogreport.wordpress.com/2010/06/10/i-told-you-so-folks-was-only-concerned-about-blog-traffic/

Over the last two weeks, our founding editor Will Folks (a.k.a. Sic Willie) has occupied a unique role in the SCGOP gubernatorial fight. Ever since acknowledging that he had an inappropriate physical relationship with Republican front-runner Nikki Haley in the Spring of 2007, which involved flights of fantasy supported by self performed manual stimulation, he’s been at the center of a media and political sh*t storm the likes of which the Palmetto state hasn’t seen since … well, last summer.

Needless to say, conspiracy theories abound as to his underlying motivations for coming forward. Self promotion and trying to help the opposition is the primary one.

Some believe his admission was designed to sink Haley’s candidacy … a plan that obviously failed. Others maintain he hatched the scheme with the deliberate intention of generating sympathy for his favored candidate, which … if true … obviously worked like a charm.

Folks’ statement following Haley’s victory on Tuesday night offered no clue as to “which end (is) up.”

Politically, I’m gratified that someone who has consistently advanced the ideals I believe in – whose career I have played a role in advancing – has won such an important victory. Personally, I’m disappointed that she felt she had to lie in order to achieve that victory.

    Hmmmm …

Folks has offered some circumstantial evidence to support his claim, but thus far no “smoking gun” has been released. That is because none exists.

Will one emerge over the next two weeks? Only if Folks fabricates something new. Or will the second-place GOP finisher, U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, bow out of the race before we even get to that point?

    We’ll have to stay tuned…

This is what Folks said on his website 5 days ago (http://www.fitsnews.com/2010/06/05/nikki-haley-and-the-scgops-november-dilemma/)

What these text messages did not show, however, was the two weeks of pure hell that my wife and I went through prior to deciding that this was an issue that needed to be addressed preemptively on my website. Literally every day during those two weeks there was a new report of some different piece of evidence allegedly being leaked to this reporter or that reporter, and based on what I knew to be true (and based on one specific piece of evidence that I had seen with my own eyes a year earlier) I could not be sure that a story exposing the relationship wasn’t going to run.

Now he says he told her only two days before the “revelation.” He needs to get his story straight.
