Pardon me for two links to Colmes in one day, but T-Paw is under fire for questioning the Progressive Orthodoxy that sexual preference is hardwired.
My question is: how do you handle the freewill/destiny question? It seems that the “Born this way” approach becomes a slippery slope argument, dropping you into a mechanistic universe. Or am I missing something?
Not to be a tease, I’ll offer my take, briefly. Even if freewill does not exist (because we can’t seem to reach a conclusive proof either way) our very system asserts and assumes freewill, despite all Progressive attempts to reduce society to an ant heap.

We have no problem accepting that pedophiles are “born that way,” do we?

Uh..hell yes we do. Most people would say that some sort of really bad psychological traumas subconsciously turns people into pedophiles. They’d explain Michael Jackson’s alleged sexual leanings on a really messed up life and  not genes.

(I had wondered if anyone would be brazen enough to apply the “born that way” hypothesis to pedophilia.)

On another note…if anyone wonders why so many people think homosexuality to be messed up in the head, blame the bulk of gay activists – all their kneejerk explanations for “gay is okay” are bonkers.

“The APA says it’s normal.” Yeah, like the Officially Recognized Experts are never wrong. (And the APA undermines its claim to sanity with its two flip-flops on pedophilia.)

“It’s biologically caused, so it’s normal.” Aside from the lack of proof of a biological cause, it’s faulty logic to judge behavior solely on whether or not it’s biologically hardwired. Paranoid schizophrenia is biologically caused – is it normal?

“Lower animals do it, so it’s normal.” Average people think it’s quite nutty to try to compare sapient and non-sapient sexuality. The lower animals act purely out of instinct. If humans were that way Rebecca Watson would have gotten nailed in that elevator. (Cue the Aerosmith.) There is a dimension to the human mind, and thus to human sexuality, that is completely alien to the lower animals.

I think they’re so concerned with it, MPR, because the disruption of Society is a basic part of the their [the Left's] plan to have the country dissolve into Chaos.  The homosexual rights movement evolved very quickly into a scheme to undermine Western Tradition by making the abnormal normal.  Those homosexuals who support it are Useful Idiots and Dupes who are helping to undermine and destroy the very Civilization that is the least likely to persecute their kind.

    Best act he ever committed.

straights have engaged in homosexual behavior for lots of reasons besides sexual desire. All the way from curiousity, to survival (e.g. prison) to societal approval (ancient Greece).

But where society has approved male homosexual behavior, as in Greece, the status of women is little more than breeding stock – though it be noted that there still was no “same-sex marriage” because marriage was the only way to have heirs and pass on estates.

Male sexual behavior in and of itself is different than female’s. Fetishes are almost exclusively male.

There is a point where we, as a society, balance reality (2% of male population is exclusively homosexual) with ideal goals (heterosexual marriage). Where there is choice involved, we should always support the choice of heterosexuality.

“Lower animals do it, so it’s normal.”

They don’t do it because they’re “born gay” they do it as a release mechanism because they can’t find a mate, or can’t compete for a mate. I hold that humans become gay for the same damn reason, but its neither hip nor politically correct to say things like that. That’s cool I’ll hold out for it all day long. At the end of the day it makes more sense than anything else I’ve ever read on the subject, plus there’s this-its my theory.

It probably happens at an early age and spirals out of control as puberty sticks in, and no doubt its augmented by environmental factors, and yes maybe even some genetic predisposition to the extent that some genes might enable a person to acclimate to such a lifestyle more quickly than others.

But at the end of the day, when all’s said and done, what it all boils down to is competition. It becomes cemented in the mind that “I ain’t good enough to get a good girlfriend” or maybe “girls hate me” or “girls like this or that type of guy” or “I have a small dick”.

I know that sounds simplistic but we are talking about attitudes that are inculcated in early childhood that are then exacerbated at puberty, then buried in the subconscious where they manifest as gay.

Then look what happens. The young boy who loves woman emotionally but can’t compete for them physically BECOMES a woman, and the one who can’t dominate a woman sexually finds his “mate”.

I think they called them Spinsters didn’t they?

They don’t do it because they’re “born gay” they do it as a release
mechanism because they can’t find a mate, or can’t compete for a mate.

You got the release mechanism part right. There’s a lengthy article on alleged animal homosexuality. Money quote:

“Since animals lack reason [aka sapience], their means of expressing their affective
states (fear, pleasure, pain, desire, etc.) are limited. Animals lack
the rich resources at man’s disposal to express his sentiments. Man can
adapt his way of talking, writing, gazing, gesturing in untold ways.
Animals cannot. Consequently, animals often express their affective
states ambiguously. They “borrow,” so to speak, the manifestations of
the instinct of reproduction to manifest the instincts of dominance,
aggressiveness, fear, gregariousness and so on.”

Thus animals engage in genital contact to pacify potential aggressors, or to establish social dominance (something humans do only in prison situations). Or sometimes because they can’t tell between genders – I know of a species of frog where the make keeps mounting frogs until he finds one that doesn’t give off the loud croak that only males deliver.

I don’t buy the failed-competition-for-mating explanation, but it’s not the loopiest. One common set of factors observed in male homosexuality is the combination of an absentee father and a deeply alienating mother. Some guys become gay because during their childhood some adult dude wheedled sexual favors from  them. Psychological self-defense mechanisms set in, and full blown Stockholm Syndrome sets in.

One albeit nonscientific source sharing the abusive-male theory of lesbianism is Malcom X – in his autobiography he notes a woman who “became a lesbian” after a series of relationships with destructive males. Perhaps some turn to lesbianism because of otherwise bad experiences with alienating males – I can see how having Greg Allman for a stepdad might mess up a girl’s perceptions about the males of the species.

That’s just a few profiles associated with homosexuality, the ones I’m most familiar with. I dont’ know if anyone could provide an exhaustive list. I don’t think anyone has ever identified all the causes.

I’m sure there’s probably not a one size fits all explanation, but I still like my theory as an explanation for some cases just because it does mirror the animal world. And basically we’re animals physically and in a lot of other ways, with the same instincts, defense mechanisms and what not.

The key I feel is the subconscious mind where traumas and other extenuating circumstances become buried. Like I said what might not seem like such a big deal to us adults, and might even seem silly, can be a big deal to a six or seven year old child. And if its buried, then who knows what shape it will take in later years as an influence.

The absent or distant and/or domineering mother/father is doubtless an influence as well but in and of itself I can’t see that having that much influence, unless its in combination with genetic factors and, again, subconscious motivators.

I think we can at least agree the born that way theory is more than likely a load of shit.

But don’t traits that aren’t continually reinforced eventually fade out of existence…..like our appendix?

Junk DNA can only hold on for so long.  If it doesn’t serve a purpose, the trait can be lost over enough time.

And if no one can help but to behave a certain way, then all behavioral rehab clinics are frauds!

    - Sex rehab
    - Drug rehab
    - Anger management
    - Yoga class

You obviously don’t understand the concept of recessive and dominant traits. Do some reading on Punnett squares, if you understand them you’ll understand how a “gay trait” could survive indefinitely in the gene pool, even if it’s not advantageous for individual reproduction.
