Intended as Satire, But Unfortunately, Some People Really Think This Way

“What’s so wrong with being dependent on government? Of all the things to depend on, isn’t government the smartest choice? You could depend on yourself, but come on. You know yourself; you fail all the time. You could depend on your friends and family, but they’d eventually get sick of you. But government will always love you and always be there. Long after you’re dead and forgotten, there will be government.”
Frank J. Fleming, New York Post, “Don’t We Need a Food Stamp President?”

I wish I could put into words how awful it makes me feel that this is the level of civilisation we’ve reached. This jackass would never survive if his governments didn’t spoon-feed him. “Survival of the fittest” doesn’t apply in American cities anymore.

     KC,

I don’t think you are familiar with Frank J.

A government powerful enough to give you everything is powerful enough to take it all away.

I don’t have a problem with at least some form of social safety net, as I hate to see people’s families suffer (and it is also unwise to cut people completely adrift in their time of need, as people with nothing to lose tend to do desperate things).  But that safety net is best applied at the community and individual levels: we have replaced the glue of individual charity, that sponsored a level of active involvement in our own little gardens which free societies need to have if they are to remain free, with a grotesque government bureaucracy which enslaves people to the state and fosters division, envy, irresponsiblity, and ultimately strife.

Fleming just may be  Giethner’s replacement at Treasury. He’s got as much sense.

This is sad.  Even if you don’t know FrankJ, have you people NO sense of humor?!  Don’t let politics coarsen your souls to the point where you can’t even recognize satire anymore.

Ok, I don’t know who Frank J. is — and sadly, I can see somebody actually saying this.  Thus the rapier like wit of the satire is lost on me today.
Perhaps in a week my humor will be back…but don’t bet on it as a sure thing.

There’s a reason for that saying “The Left is impossible to parody.”
