@TedCruz At Heritage On Bond v. U.S.; Slate‘s Eric Posner Hardest Hit

Posted on | November 3, 2013 | 41 Comments

by Smitty

Ted buzzes Heritage to talk about Bond v. United States, and manages to piledrive Eric Posner’s shrill objections:

Cruz is a treasure. He offers simple, lucid arguments. Cruz says more cogent, intellectually stimulating things in 43 minutes of video than #OccupyResoluteDesk has offered in 5 miserable years.

I want to see Ted Cruz run for President in a few years, if only for the joy of watching him calmly, pleasantly, rhetorically disassemble all other contenders.

He alludes to a report published by the Senate, which appears to be this under-reported gem, “The Legal Limit: the Obama Administration’s Attempts to Expand Federal Power”.

Still more at Breitbart.

In American politics, one of two things usually happen to politicos who act against the party leadership like Cruz has.

Either they disappear, never to be seen on the national stage again.

Or they become the party leadership.

At this point, I’d say the odds are about 2-1 against anyone being able to stave off the collapse. Cruz would make a valiant effort though.

    Blather, Blather, Blather….

Can anyone show me a single solitary thing that Ted Cruz actually did prior to running for public office to advance conservatism?

Any grassroots activism? Did he serve on the board of any conservative values non-profits? Did he do any pro-bono work defending a conservative principle on behalf of a patriot?

Can you point to any significant financial support of faith based organizations or any Church?

Did he help fund a pregnancy care center or perhaps work to protect the rights of home school parents?

What about tax policy? Did he lobby any single governmental body, anywhere, to do anything to reduce taxes?

Can you provide me with a single Amicus brief where he weighed on any federal case where he advocated for constitutional principals, limited government, of individual freedoms.

Of course you cant, because they don’t exist. Most of the sheeple even think he filibustered Obamacare in the senate during the shutdown, when all that happened is he gave a 21 hour speech that was agreed upon in advance with Dingy Harry.

Does he give rousing speeches that inspire keyboard jockeys, of course he does.

Is he a true conservative, of course not, just another inside the beltway toastmaster that really understands his audience.

You summarize yourself deftly with your first three words. If you can get past your own accusations an innuendo long enough to listen to what Cruz says in the video, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Smitty – I deeply respect you and Stacy, and America is a better place for your combined good works.

I was pleasantly surprised by Michael Clarke Duncan’s performance in The Green Mile “flicker show,” but his excellent performance on stage does not mean he would be a good US senator.

Everyone need to remember that “politics is merely Hollywood for ugly people.”

Our once great nation needs statesman not politicians. As a 42 year native Texan who did grass roots organization in 200 of the 254 counties in our great state, I can tell you one thing for sure….

    Ted Cruz ain’t no statesman.

A man’s character is best measured by the sum total of his life’s work, and that bodes very poorly for Cruz.

Well, he would tear down to shreds the arguments of his opponents, especially Dems. That is what you get when you are 3-time debating champion.
*While at Princeton, he competed for the American Whig-Cliosophic Society’s Debate Panel and won the top speaker award at both the 1992 U.S. National Debating Championship and the 1992 North American Debating Championship.[26] In 1992, he was named U.S. National Speaker of the Year and Team of the Year (with his debate partner, David Panton).[26] Cruz was also a semi-finalist at the 1995 World Universities Debating Championship.[27]*

He filibustered in order to put Obamacare front and center for us to discuss and dissect. If he even had an agreement from Harry, Dingy Harry (your description) must have been totally flabbergasted that he was totally outclassed by Ted Cruz.

Did you watch the embedded video? Cruz has more intellectual/rhetorical firepower than almost the rest of the Senate combined.

This could be because he’s speaking truth. You haven’t impinged much other than your reliability here.

  25. smitty
    November 3rd, 2013 @ 2:18 pm

Request you watch the video and elaborate. Whereas Rand Paul speaks well, and from the heart, Cruz is just verbally impeccable.

I don’t think a mere opportunist could go for 21 hours straight like he did. You need righteousness for that.

  26. Lemuel Vargas

So what is a statesman to you, then? An incumbent who keeps his mouth shut even though he sees the flaws of the system? An incumbent who plays by the rules? An incumbent who goes where the flow goes?

But Java Joe said Cruz was Constitutionally illiterate and did not understand the Heller case despite having drafted the amicus brief for 31 state AGs and giving an amici oral argument before the Supreme Court on the case.

And Sean Penn said Obama should have Cruz, his dear American brother, committed for his own good. The Soviets knew that dissidents were mentally ill.

Who can I believe: those elites or my lying eyes?

Please note, he gave that brilliant talk while suffering from a cold.

    Forget 2016 and let’s win 2014 first!

  29. Freddie Sykes
    November 3rd, 2013 @ 5:45 pm

I can’t claim to know about the truth your first opinion – although I tend to agree with you – but the fact is that Ted Cruz has argued before the Supreme Court 9 times and that is certainly more than any other sitting member of Congress.

  30. ChrisDavis2011
    November 3rd, 2013 @ 5:45 pm

    Righteousness?

Smitty have you been imbibing in fermented spirits today?

A good man is being right with humanity; whereas, a righteous man is being right with God.

If the rapture occurred today and the sum total of a man’s life was winning a few debate titles, making arguments in a courtroom, giving speeches, and raising money for fellow politicos, would that man be judged righteous?

Always remember, talk is the easiest used of all talents with God has endowed upon mankind.

Again I say, a man’s character is best measured by his life’s work, and that bodes very poorly for Cruz.

  31. Freddie Sykes
    November 3rd, 2013 @ 5:52 pm

Unlike Newt, who is brilliant and can debate, one thing Ted has going for him is that he is very careful in choosing his words. When a “journalist” goes fishing for a damning sound bite, Ted disappoints by giving a measured, judicious response.

My God, how journalists hate nuance!

  32. ChrisDavis2011
    November 3rd, 2013 @ 5:56 pm

If you don’t know what a righteous man is, I would suggest starting with Proverbs, the Psalms, and finishing with the Book of Matthew. A statesman’s life foundation is that of a righteous man, one can not exist without the other.

If you are truly interested (which I don’t believe you are) take the time to read David Barton’s collection of works and watch his video series, “America’s Godly Heritage.”

But most likely you are another keyboard jockey who fancies himself as a true patriot because he listens to Fox News and forwards speeches eloquently orated by the favorite conservative of the day.

My only hope is that Ted Cruz proves me wrong.

The more you pile on the innuendo, the less confident I am you’ve viewed the video embedded in this post.

You offer mellifluous argument; I only hope the casual reader isn’t taken in by you.

  35. ChrisDavis2011
    November 3rd, 2013 @ 6:44 pm

If my arguments are mellifluous, you can always summon the Wombat’s hammer…….

The funny part is your only defense is watch the video, must watch video, watch video, must watch video.

Did the Umbrella Corporation release an airborne virus in your ventilation system?

I am curious why you don’t want to debate why you suggest he is “righteous” or why you feel he is a statesman.

Tell me please, what in his life’s work would suggest either?

After all, remember Hitler was one of the greatest orators of all time, and spoke to a downtrodden nation that was suffering many of the same problems America faces today.

For the record, I am not now, nor have I ever, suggested Ted Cruz is like Hitler in any shape, form, or fashion.

I am merely saying they are both great orators.

I would suggest that Cruz’s record as TX AG, and the details of his election to the U.S. Senate in Texas, belie your entire line of reasoning.

You paint Cruz out to be akin to a know-nothing, stuffed shirt community organizer catapulted far beyond his highest level of incompetence. Having both clerked at, and later prevailed while arguing cases at the SCOTUS just ain’t beanbag, and you do the man gross disservice to insinuate that it is.

    Au Contraire oh wise one…..

I never suggested he was a know nothing, I accurately stated he has been a do nothing with regard to conservative principals and ideals.

Yes, Teddy is a good mouthpiece. Smart, articulate, quick witted, and calculating.

He was never AG in Texas, but was appointed Solicitor General by the actual Attorney General Greg Abbott..

The sum total of his private practice experience is a mere five years.

The rest of the time he was a mouthpiece for the government.

He never built built a business, met a payroll, managed an organization, and most importantly, he never acted on the conservative ideology he waxes about poetically.

    Not a single, solitary thing.

Talk is cheap, but America doesn’t need a debate champion.

We need a proven leader who has lived his values rather than an eloquent pol who earned his income living off the government.
