Florida sex offender Kaitlyn Hunt, whose case became a cause for many gay rights activists this year, was aware that her affair with a 14-year-old was illegal, documents obtained from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office show.
“Yes, I know I’m 18 and can get in trouble,” Hunt said in an online conversation more than a month before her February arrest, “but I understand the consequences and I know what I got myself into when I entered the relationship with [the underage girl].”
Hunt, who last month pleaded no contest to multiple felony charges in the case, has claimed in media interviews that she did not realize her involvement with the minor was a crime in Florida, where the legal age of consent is 16. “I wouldn’t have continued, if I really knew what the laws were and if I knew what I was getting myself into,” Hunt told ABC’s Matt Gutman in an interview broadcast on the network’s 20/20 program. . . .

She was “grooming” her? Really? She was 14, not 4, and definitely not a “child”. She was a teenager just like Hunt who willingly went along with their relationship. Conservatives, especially social conservatives, have this annoying proclivity for applying a one size fits all label to every individual and situation regardless of the context. And then to call it “evil? You know what? Go to Church and light a candle if you’re so morally outraged. YOUR GOD IS DEAD(not that he ever really existed in the first place). This century will see the total disintegration of the big three religions(Xstianity, Judaism, and Islam). All Hail Horus!

No, arbitrary means it’s 15 in one place, 16 in another, 18 over there, and then the legality changes yet again if say the younger person is of age but younger than 18 and the older is more than 4 years older, if there are two teens and the older is less than 3 years old, if you’re a teacher, etc. That’s what I mean by arbitrary so applying a universal moral standard to something so arbitrary is stupid.

I don’t know what you’re griping about. The only thing that matters is this case is Florida law, which, as we now know, wasn’t too difficult for Kate to grasp. Contrary to her and her parents’ bluster, she knew ALL about it. She still wasn’t deterred from what she acknowledged was wrong, and suffered the circumstances.
