Daily Kos Founder Markos Compares Arizona to ‘Apartheid South Africa’

Posted on | July 19, 2014 | 28 Comments

Organizers of Netroots Nation, the national left-wing blog conference that began as “Yearly Kos” in 2006, have decided that next year’s conference will be in Phoenix, Arizona. Marko Moulitsas Zuniga is angry:

Netroots Nation announced two days ago that Phoenix, Arizona would host its 2015 conference. I wish the conference the best, but it will unfortunately take place without Daily Kos’ attendance or assistance.
I made very clear in the wake of Arizona’s passage of SB 1070 that I would not be setting foot in the state, nor spending a dime in it until the law was revoked. The law, however gutted by the courts, remains on the books, as does systemic harassment of Latinos, so my pledge still stands. . . .
I doubt the conference would decide to host the event in, say, Apartheid South Africa, in order to “take the fight to the enemy”. If you think that analogy is absurd, it is, but only in terms of degree, not intent in the county that has consistently elected Sheriff Joe Arpaio since 1992. But if you want a less bombastic analogy, look to labor: Netroots Nation refuses to hold events in cities without union hotel and conference facilities. They’re not “taking the fight” to non-unionized locations because we, as a movement, stand for the right of people to organize and we don’t reward those places that deny those rights. It’s the right call. Also, would the conference have been happy to stay in Arizona had Gov. Jan Brewer signed the virulently anti-gay SB 1062 earlier this year? Hard to see that happening.
Latinos deserve that same kind of respect.

So, the conference is ditching its founder, because progressive bloggers don’t respect Latinos as much as gays, or something.

A reason to post a link to a British ex-pat blogger Harry Hutton making sport of the Yearly Kos. Of course, the Kossacks didn’t get the joke.

And BTW, Right To Work states don’t deny workers the right to unionize or collectively bargain. Rather, they don’t make membership mandatory. Only in a Prog’s mind is the right to refuse to join a group a denial of rights.

And further, the AZ convention business doesn’t want them. They’re shitty tippers, thinking that somehow refusing to pay money themselves, they’re striking a blow for a “living wage.”

Forgot to post Harry’s reply to Kos. Great stuff.

Arizona SB 1070 required the state to enforce Federal law.

Notice how no one was interested in changing the Federal law?

Such an idiot.. I grew up in Arizona & can tell you first hand that it’s extremely diverse & fully integrated thank you.
I went to more than one middle class – neighborhood school where there were as many hispanics (most of the ‘fully integrated, english speaking variety), as there were caucasian students.
Of course, the type of hispanic families I’m talking about are also likely to hate illegal invasions the way we do!
I remember a friend’s mother, (who herself immigrated legally), would just go off about illegals sucking us dry all the time. She’d get so angry that she couldn’t help but go from speaking english to ranting in spanish. (I had to have him translate what she was saying for me). It was the only subject I ever saw set her off that way.
This battle is about Americans vs criminal invaders that are unvetted & uninvited & has nothing to do with the heritage of the Americans fighting it.

Pretty much. The issue is the coming in the nation in a criminal manner, and the demands they be treated quite well are grating, especially when one’s grandfather was not taught the language from the Old Country to assimilate.

It had actually been a couple of years since I ran across a timely Kos quote. Of course, I don’t troll the lefty blogs, not enough hours in the days or years in my life to waste like that.

But it seems that for his entire career, he was only noteworthy when he was saying something very stupid. That there exist American citizens who take the clod seriously is a serious indictment of our education system and federal and union bastardization of it.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio – hell yeah!
    Marko Moulitsas Zuniga – who?

There are many reasons–too many to enumerate–why I could never be a leftist. Chief among those reasons is that I could never keep track of the ever-fluid proper hierarchy. Do gays trump women today, or is it blacks over Hispanics? And then, what to do with subcategories–who wins when it is a black woman versus a disabled gay? I could never play football on a field where the goalposts can be moved at random in the middle of a play, or where the 50 yard line might suddenly vanish.
I am fortunate that, as a conservative, I instead concern myself with right versus wrong. Easy to color within the lines.

    I agree 100% M. Thompson!

    Make no mistake about it, this IS a hostile invasion by people who want to destroy us! (Maybe not all of them, but the majority do). My opinion on these ‘border surgers’ can be read in a response I posted to a Murrieta protester last week at;

    http://americanpowerblog.blogspot.com/2014/07/video-craven-murrieta-officials-throw.html#comment-1472257426

What we are now dealing with is an Obama – orchestrated disaster that poses an existential threat to our nation in every way imaginable.

Why is it that so many leftists believe America has no right to protect her borders – (or even have borders)?

It is the same leftists who believe Israel has no right to defend herself against terrorists & wishes to disarm law abiding, American civilians, (denying them their natural right of self defense); who also believes America needs open borders.

Those views make it clear to me that there would never be never enough ‘compromise’ that we could give on this issue (as well as all others).

No matter how much pain is inflicted on this country, to them it will never be enough. It’s time for all Americans to realize that ‘compromising’ with the ‘blame America first’ – (then blame Israel), crowd has already gone way too far!

Thank God the American public is finally waking up to Obama’s destructive agenda & are starting to push back against it. The public’s ‘reality TV bubble’ is popping & their self preservation instinct is kicking in. That’s awesome to finally see…. I just hope it isn’t already too late!

The whole “Arizona is racist” thing got it’s big push over the MLK Day fiasco.

To my knowledge, Arizona is still the only state to put MLK Day to a public vote. Twice.

And if you go by the raw numbers of people wanting a MLK Day, it passed overwhelmingly both times.

That and the fact that they love to blame other people. Especially if they get more control out of the deal

Although in all fairness, some Republican politicos pull the same nonsense.

I’d go further and say most GOP politicos do it. The GOPe is just as bad as the DimoKKKraps in that regard.

Well, I was trying to be nice about it.

    You’re right.

When it comes to politicos, we should remember the Douglas Adams quote:

“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.

To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.

To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”

I owe sort of a debt to Daily Kos. Back in the day when I first started going to blogs I stumbled upon Kos and learned that many many progs are anti-semitic. They made no bones about it.
