Re-Election ‘Slam Dunk’ for Mikulski?

Posted on | February 25, 2010 | 24 Comments

Just turned this up while researching the Senate race in Maryland, where I live:

Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski (Md.) has announced her campaign staff for her re-election bid, which is expected to be a slam-dunk for the four-term Democrat.
Campaign manager Simone Ward, media consultant Mandy Grunwald and pollster Fred Yang have joined Mikulski’s effort, according to a release from her campaign.
Ward comes from EMILY’s List, where she served in the political department and helped elect Rep. Donna Edwards (Md.) and others. Grunwald, who will serve as the campaign’s chief communications strategist, is best known for working on Hillary Rodham Clinton ’s campaign for the White House. Grunwald has advised several Democratic senators in recent cycles, including Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire.
Yang and his firm, Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group, have polled for 12 senators and two Maryland Democrats recently elected to higher office, Gov. Martin O’Malley and Rep. Frank M. Kratovil Jr.

This is a year when all the political factors favor Republicans. So why is Mikulski — an ugly left-winger from Baltimore — considered a “slam dunk”? Two reasons:

  1. The GOP in Maryland is run by a bunch of clueless country club types; and
  2. The National Republican Senatorial Committee is controlled by the incomparably clueless John Cornyn.

If anybody knows the name of a Republican challenger to Mikulski, please let me know in the comments. God knows the Maryland GOP and the NRSC aren’t going to do anything useful here.

I wouldn’t waste my time, she is a shoe-in. We don’t call it “The Peoples Republic of Maryland” for nothing. BTW, I still have a copy of the photo of Babs holding a Street Sweeper and looking just like Ma Barker.

I nominate you for the race. Stacy McCain vs. Mikulski, that would be entertaining.

Well, there’s a few, but the only one who seems like he’s actually serious is Dr. Eric Wargotz (wargotzforussenate.org).

I live in Kensington and I don’t understand why former Gov. Bob Ehrlich isn’t running against her. O’Malley stinks, but I don’t think the state wants a rematch between the two. I am sick to death of the brain dead liberals in Montgomery and PG counties that decide for the rest of us!

Stacy, Mike is right. Why don’t you run for the Republican nomination? Remember, even if it goes nowhere, there is no way it would be bad for site traffic.

Word is,Cornyn’s trying to recruit Joy Behar to run, to reach out to Maryland Independents…

Hey, she’s a rich white woman with name recognition, all– the only — things the NRSC looks for in a candidate…

I remember reading speculation that she might not run due difficulties recovering from breaking her ankle in three places last summer. Is she up to running?

    Michael Steele.

Replacing Mikluski with Steele and bringing in a real RNC head would be plus-plus-plus.

Jim Rutledge is the best Republican candidate by far. He is conservative and his message resonates with the people.

I don’t think it is such a slam dunk for Mikulski as one may think.

I completely agree with Robert. Jim Rutledge is the best Republican candidate in the field and it is not the slam dunk for Babs that it has been in the past. We have a real shot at taking her out of office. Get behind Jim Rutledge now. He needs our help.
