VIDEO: A Mosque at Ground Zero?
Posted on | May 24, 2010 | 26 Comments
Another great ad from Alabama, this one from 2nd District Republican candidate Rick Barber:
Excerpts:
“We weren’t attack by a nation. We weren’t attacked by ‘terror.’ We were attacked by Islamic jihadists. . . . Jihad threatens our freedom, our families and our way of life. . . . Islamic jihadist pose a clear and present danger to American freedom and to the very existence of the state of Israel. . . . Now Muslims want to build a mosque just two blocks from where the World Trade Center once stood. When’s the grand opening of this Ground Zero mosque? September 11, 2011. This is unacceptable. There is a difference between tolerance and surrender. . . . If we don’t start electing leaders who recognize the enemy, call them by name and stand up against them, then surrendering is exactly what we are doing.”

The Andrew Sullivan version…
I can’t believe we went from that dark day of 9/11, to the nation rallying for about a month or so, to this. Then again, we just barely blocked the Museum of Our Collective Shame, aka the International Freedom Center being errected at Ground Zero and the Crescent of Shame in Shanksville, so I guess I should not be that surprised.

[…] I have a problem with people who have a problem with a mosque near ground zero. The Other McCain has an ad by Rick Barber who is a GOP candidate for Congress, in which he equates Islam and Islamic terrorism and calls the mosque unacceptable. I don’t accept the idea of jihadism or any form of Islamic terrorism, but I also reject the idea that other people have the right to tell me what, who, where, and when to worship. […]

Well Conservative Shemale, I agree that the government should not be in the business of telling you “what, who, where, and when to worship.”
That said, I do not think we would agree to errect a Shinto shrine next to the USS Arizona and I am pretty sure a lot of people would get upset if some shrine to German Teutonic Religion was set up next to Auchwitz.
This is a little bit different. Private Muslims can buy land or leases near ground zero and errect a thirteen story Islamic Center and just happen to open it on September 11, 2011. Why would they do that? What is the motivation for that? There may not be anything that can be done to stop it (or rather it may be a worse idea to try to block this by the government). But citizens can and should speak out against this and state they find this opening of such a center offensive (or are those free speech rights curtailed?). If that Islamic Center had in its lobby a display speaking out against violent jihad and condemning it, I might feel different. But my guess is it will not.

*headdesk* Every Alabama candidate with a flip cam wants to make the next viral video.
Sure, these commercials make for great conversation for people who don’t live in Alabama and who don’t actually know the (real) background of these candidates, but it’s nauseating for Alabamians who know how smarmy these people are in real life.
Stacy, really?

I don’t care why they did it. I agree it’s offensive, but so are a lot of things that I don’t want the government sticking their nose in. If Rick Barber had said I find this offensive that would be a different story. He didn’t. As a candidate for congress he called it unacceptable, equated building a mosque with terrorism, and called Muslims the enemy.

Every Jihadist/Islamic Terrorist is a Muslim, they ARE the ENEMY. He specified that there is a difference between tolerance, and surrender.
Building a mosque on ‘Ground Zero’ territory is part of Islamic stage of conquest. It would be a symbolic show of power to the world’s Jihadists, and acts to demoralize their enemy, the Infidels in America.
All protestations to the contrary is Al Taqiyya(Islamic sanctioned Deception towards Islam’s Enemies)
Sharia Law is being pushed for, bit by bit, throughout the country, as Islam infiltrates, consolidates power, and commits acts of Jihad upon the ‘Infidels’ to Islam.
Every Islamic ‘victory’ is trumpeted around the world. Do you really think a mosque, to be opened on Sept 11, 2011, is to foster peace, or to signify the advance of Jihad upon America?

jenn, we should care why this group would want to build this mosque in this location. While Barber may be guilty of throwing out chunks of red meat to voters in Alabama (who I appreciate for still having a sense of outrage over the underlying act of opening up an international Islamic center adjacient to an international Islamic attack location), I suppose as a member of Congress Barber could vote on a bill to condemn the land the Mosque wants to build on and then give it to some private developer for an urban renewal project. I am not in favor of Kelo, but stare decisis and all of that.
And I know that if some group wanted to do something that Mayor Daley (as an example) disapproved of in Chicago (say a museum to the various corruptions of the Daley Family), you would suddenly see zoning and building department issues start to multiply. At least Barber is saying what he thinks.
I can understand you disliking pandering–on an issue that does not directly involve Alabama. But the American public is not out there lynching Muslims (American or otherwise). And I would appreciate more members of Congress at least speaking out at bending over backwards for PC compliance.

Have are politicians forgotten Pearl Harbor and WWII, and how this country came together and whipped both Nazis Germany and Japan with no questions asked. I believe our seniors who faught that war had more back bone then these politicians we have in Washington D C today. It alway boils down to how it will effect thier political future, not how it will effect this great country of ours. They always want to pad their pockets at our expence. Politicians had more backbone during WWII then these spineless politicians have today. I feel the pain of the loved ones who lost family members on 9-11 and what a slap in the face if they follow through with letting that mosque to be built. Like I said its always about money. Ground zero is sacred to this country, not the muslems. Bloomburg, have some backbone.
