Rick Santorum: Beer Gourmet?
Posted on | December 13, 2011 | 31 Comments
NBC News highlights an aspect of the Republican presidential candidate’s personality that had previously gone unnoticed:
AMANA, Iowa — In case you were wondering what sort of beers the former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum drinks, reporters trailing him Sunday now have a complete list.
“It’s the stouts, the bocks, and then the white ales — and wheats,” Santorum told a small group of media. He added later: “I don’t do wine tastings. I do beer tastings.”
The GOP hopeful was sidled up to the tasting bar at Millstream Brewery, a local microbrewery in a historic landmark town lined with colonial-style houses and storefronts. The bartender served a small glass of the brewery’s prizewinner, a dark and frothy beer called Back Road Stout.

Will this hurt Santorum with the teetotalers? Or will he lose votes with Joe Six-Pack for drinking “fancy” beers? I dunno.
But it certainly helps lighten up his image — hey, Rick likes beer! — and adds momentum to the Santorum Surge.

Reagan was a beer drinker as well, I don’t think that hurt him with anybody. But then again, if you think somebody is going to hell for drinking a beer, you could probably come up with multiple reasons to toss Democrats in that lake of fire, so it more than all evens out.
December 13th, 2011 @ 10:59 pm
Now I don’t want to vote for Santorum. I want to have his children.
December 13th, 2011 @ 11:00 pm
If it were someone we didn’t like, it’d be “beer snob.” I’m a beer snob, too.
December 13th, 2011 @ 11:50 pm
It really comes down to what he means by “wheat” beer.
Is he a standup guy who drinks hefeweizens?
Or is he one of those sleeper cell subversives, cloned without taste buds, who drink cheese-eating surrender monkey la biere blanche, trying to evade the issue by pretending it’s actually Belgian (“witbier”)?
The importance of this issue cannot be overstated.
December 14th, 2011 @ 12:14 am
“Back Road Stout”
Yes, Mr. Freud, what is it you’re dying to tell the class?
December 14th, 2011 @ 12:15 am
I know I am.
I absolutely refuse to drink any beer that isn’t open.
December 14th, 2011 @ 12:17 am
“you could probably come up with multiple reasons to toss Democrats in that lake of fire”
I’ll take “For Entertainment” for $500, Alex.
December 14th, 2011 @ 12:26 am
Shiner Bock, baby! I go all the way to Chino fer that…
December 14th, 2011 @ 12:43 am
I am so jonesing for a Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat right now.
Damn you, Rick Santorum!
December 14th, 2011 @ 12:45 am
Iowa is a 3.2 state, and it is illegal to run a tab.
December 14th, 2011 @ 1:02 am
Then the terrorists have won already.
December 14th, 2011 @ 1:56 am
But does Rick Santorum home brew?
BTW, I saw mail order cherries in a jar of moonshine. But you have to live in New York. That sucks. I really want those cherries.
I am all for federalism, but I really want those cherries.
December 14th, 2011 @ 1:58 am
Dude, that is an image I did not need.
December 14th, 2011 @ 3:42 am
If they’re shipping it, they paid the tax. If they paid the tax, it ain’t “‘shine.” ‘Shine is all about NOT paying the taxes. It adds a very special and unique flavor: subtle, yet noticeably sweet and sublimely satisfying.
December 14th, 2011 @ 4:03 am
Plus, if you have enough, you’ll see the “moonbow.”
December 14th, 2011 @ 6:28 am
Stands to reason.
In as much as Pennsylvania has more microbreweries than any other state in the union. I, myself, have brewed my own beer, and it’s pretty damn good stuff.
December 14th, 2011 @ 7:34 am
Give me a Budweiser with a couple of cheese conies, or either hot wings or chili from BW&R, hell even a couple of leftover pieces of pizza from Pizza Hut, cold or hot, and I’m a happy barbarian. You guys are welcome to the fancy shit.
December 14th, 2011 @ 7:51 am
Richard: I admire your commitment [and you’re non-coMITTment] and tenacity, but you’re starting to scare me, buddy.
December 14th, 2011 @ 8:05 am
Ask Little Barry…or Reggie Love.
December 14th, 2011 @ 8:11 am
Ah, Budweiser — what beer drinkers drink when we’re not drinking beer!
December 14th, 2011 @ 8:22 am
When I get in the mood for a classier beer, I go to a Chinese restaurant and have a Heineken with two or three egg-rolls. That’s about as high class as I get with my beer drinking.
December 14th, 2011 @ 8:23 am
Among many other things….
December 14th, 2011 @ 8:26 am
Just make the universe better, and pour it back into the horse….
I will give the Budweiser boys credit for the world’s first portable brewery. With 8 production units, no less.

Budweiser is OK if you can’t get beer.

Great minds think alike. They can’t articulate speech after enough beers, but they think alike. Bromance noogies all around!
December 14th, 2011 @ 11:07 am
You win.
December 14th, 2011 @ 2:03 pm
Call me a snob, but i’d rather drink an American microbrew than International Conglomerate Budweiser.

[…] 6} My first presidential pick, Rick Santorum, likes beer. He doesn’t do wine tastings, but he does do beer tastings. People seem to think Santorum has no charisma, no personality, and I get the impression you aren’t listening, because…well, he has no personality. Of you are that person, I think you’re wrong. If you are Conservative, and you aren’t listening, give Rick a chance. You probably believe everything, or almost everything, Santorum says. […]
