Armey’s Exit and the Mystery $12 Million

Posted on | December 8, 2012 | 12 Comments

Mother Jones reports that a pair of Knoxville-based mystery corporations contributed $12 million to the FreedomWorks super-PAC in September. Dick Armey, whose exit from FreedomWorks made headlines this past week, says he knows nothing about it.

Neither does FreedomWorks president Matt Kibbe, “whom Armey has accused of misappropriating FreedomWorks resources for his own personal benefit,” to quote Mother Jones.

For the record, I ain’t got no $12 million, and the only person I know in Knoxville is Professor Glenn Reynolds. If Insty’s got $12 million, he’s being awfully quiet about it.

This is going to be a mess.

If these companies are so mysterious, why isn’t someone obtaining information from Tennessee’s state agency that oversees incorporations about officers and directors, and tracking their other involvements? This isn’t rocket science — it’s called reporting. I only ever worked on school newspapers and even I know how it’s done.

And no, calling Dick Armey and Matt Kibbe for comment doesn’t cover it.

    Mother Jones. Mother Freaking Jones.

This is a “news source” somewhat less reliable than The Onion or Australian radio hosts.

    ’nuff said!

I am not trusting Mother Jones, but this infighting certainly has a back story.

So the messenger is daft. What of the message?

Well, if Glenn Reynolds did give $12M to FreedomWorks, he wouldn’t still have it, would he? 😉

Why do you think he’s so quietly amused all the time? Heh. Indeed.

Bears investigating. Too bad MoJo doesn’t seem interested in doing any. They’re satisfied to try to embarrass Armey, Kibbe and FreedomWorks rather than get at the facts.

It does when your only purpose is to rile up the incredulous rabble that call themselves ‘free thinkers’ through half truths and innuendo.

Might as well expect a detailed investigation of Soros money in Rolling Stone.

Somebody’s got to make the payments on stately Instapundit manor, after all.

I’m inclined to agree with Adj on the reliability and accuracy of Mother Jones, and wouldn’t waste a lot of time sweating it. Of course, if we lose six carriers over this, you may call me Meyer. 😉
