Forgiving Sally Kohn

Will anti-gay Christians be politically and socially ostracized? I sure hope so. Just as those orthodox Christians who still believe in strict, traditional gender roles have been increasingly mocked as absurd. Once upon a time, marriage constituted property—the wife was the literal property of the husband, and could not legally let alone culturally own anything of her own. The governing cultural norm was that women should be barefoot, pregnant and subservient.

Those norms were reinforced by religion, but our interpretation of religion, like the Constitution, is obviously influenced by contemporary conditions. We apply the Constitution to Internet regulations, even though the Founding Fathers definitely didn’t foresee such technological evolutions. And we demand our faith traditions stretch and grow as well.

Will those who pursue wisdom be ostracized for not acceding to the new foolishness? Well, fools gotta fool. But is their ostracism a concern? I guess I’m more saddened by Sally’s strawman argument concerning Christianity, and can only hope that she unburdens herself of these notions at a proper church.

…but our interpretation of religion, like the Constitution, is obviously influenced by contemporary conditions

Sally, Sally, Sally: we interact with Truth in a way that refines us toward it. The Truth is not some silly putty against which we emote. The ‘contemporary conditions’ in question mostly seems a bumper crop of fools. The last fifty years have led us through a broad gate, and down a wide way, that leads to destruction.

I hope for maximal mercy for you and everyone else, Sally. I also hope that you have a moment where you understand how thoroughly off base your ideas are.

Isn’t she the one who doesn’t want her daughter to be straight and is trying to talk her out of it? I guess that’s the kind of intolerance we’re supposed to tolerate now.

Heh. The Orthodox Church survived Stalin and Communist rule by going underground. Expect to see “house churches” and underground or fugitive Priests. I am not optimistic about the survival of the Republic or even the nation but I am certain about the survival of the Orthodox Church.

“Ostracized,” “mocked,” but not proven wrong, mind you.

It would be interesting to hear a conversation between Sally Kohn and St. Hildegard of Bingen on the subject of women in the Church.

Today’s left neither understands nor cares what constitutes proof or evidence. They “argue” with simple emotion and with intimidation. The only “argument” most of them would understand is a fist to the jaw.

Counterfactual: Imagine this decision had gone the other way. Imagine it had gone completely the other way and the Supreme Court had declared that homosexual “marriages” were not to be recognized in one single state in the union.

In this case, can anyone imagine a single conservative voice of note saying, “Will pro-gay leftists be politically and socially ostracized? I sure hope so”? Is that something that is likely in the slightest? Or would we say, “Hey, I’m glad we’re on the path back to sanity. Let’s get back to our lives”?

Leftists are the most intolerant, bigoted morons ever to inhabit this planet.

What fools. It would be easier for them to declare lead is gold than to think they can change God’s decrees. Psalm 2 shows God laughing at them and Romans 1:28 says God will turn them over to their own reprobate mind. Obviously these fools don’t believe God’s Word. They don’t even acknowledge history showing every group, nation and culture have been unable to do away with God’s people. Sadly they won’t discover how blessed it was having the Body of Christ rebuking them to repent until after we have been called up hither.

I mostly remember Silly Cone as the one who’s so consistently nonsensical that it’s like she’s trying to use Twitchy to drive her career. But she isn’t the only one, so I get them confused.

It’s the smugness that gets me. I get the feeling Sally has never questioned the rectitude of her position, ever. She doesn’t believe other positions even exist.

Paradoxically, the church always thrives under persecution.

At the time of Russian Glasnost, millions and millions of Christians came out of hiding.

Matthew 16:18, “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”

I never could fathom what the heck she was doing as a commentator on anything. She holds a law degree but never practiced; Kohn was a “community organizer” and has worked with liberal groups and foundations, but not on the basis of any skill, experience, or achievement. She’s apparently newsworthy because she’s a nutty leftist lesbian, which doesn’t seem a particular qualification.

Don’t recall who it was that wrote it (may have been RSM), but I think it’s true:

What we are seeing is the realization of all the left’s revenge fantasies that they’ve been nurturing since the ’60s. It’s FINALLY time for all “those people” to – AT LAST – learn “what it feels like”.

Problem is that “those people” aren’t the stereotyped white male Americans from 1963, the Bull Connors or the Hollywood writers who made gays the butt of endless jokes or the sexist boss who regarded employees as his personal harem.

People like Sally are nothing but the very hateful, malignant bigots that they so hope are finally getting their comeuppance.

God grant that Sally never get hers, as I think that she wouldn’t like it very much.

This seems to be the new liberal orthodoxy: there are not two sides to this-or-that question.

It would be more to the point for them to announce, “We are close-minded bigots.”

There are old men (Nat Hentoff) who argue, there are a few agreeable wonks like Harold Pollack, and there are some liberals who are abraded by aspects of the contemporary left (e.g. KC Johnson and R.M. Kaus).

These people aside, the left is all about status games and striking attitudes which work toward extending more tools (including government and foundation money) to certain occupational groups to bother and injure everyone else: the bar, the media, the educational apparat, the low rent characters in the ‘occupy’ movement, social work and mental health trade.

What bothers you is that the senior ranks of corporate business have proven to be shallow enough to be buffaloed and manipulated by these characters. My father’s contemporaries measured themselves by their accomplishments (by and large). What the world’s self-appointed bien pensants thought did not interest them. We are not the people we used to be.

Oh, there’s another bothersome and injurious group in the gauchiste clientele: hoodlums. The contrived media circus of the last three years is plain evil. Innocent people will be injured by all of this, but they live in neighborhoods where reporters and shifty pols like Eric Holder are not to be found.

I am really tired of the trope that “Christian women were considered property.” This was a pagan notion, but was never a Christian one. St Paul made this clear in the reciprocal language he used in 1 Corinthians 7 1-7, eg. “4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife.”

Going further, look at the writings of the fourth century Church Father, St. John Chrysostom, on marriage. He does not talk of wives being property (slaves) but of partners in love: “There is no influence more powerful than the bond of love, especially for husband and wife. A servant can be taught submission through fear; but even he, if provoked too much, will soon seek his escape. But one’s partner for life, the mother of one’s children, the source of one’s every joy, should never be fettered with fear and threats, but with love and patience. What kind of marriage can there be when the wife is afraid of her husband? What sort of satisfaction could a husband himself have, if he lives with his wife as if she were a slave, and not with a woman by her own free will? Suffer anything for her sake, but never disgrace her, for Christ never did this with the Church.”

Sally Kohn, unfortunately, has probably never really had or allowed herself to have real contact with the truth regarding Christian. I hope, for her sake, that one day she does.

I hold a profound respect for Nat Hentoff, and not just because of the issues on which I agree with him. I think he truly believes in freedom, even freedom to do things he does not like. He believes in freedom of speech and opposes creeping tyranny. I have zero doubts that there are many things on which I disagree with him, but I respect him.

And Tertullian was correct. The early Church fathers saw it all. Another reason we know that Jesus was who He said He was: who would be tortured and martyred for a lie? By the many, many, many millions at this point in time.
