‘Dangerously Out of Touch’: ABC Interview Doesn’t Quell Dump-Biden Talk

The vultures are now circling overhead above the decaying carcass of Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. The damage done by the June 27 debate cannot be repaired or wished away. The number of House Democrats calling for Biden to step aside as the party’s nominee has now increased to five, with Minnesota Rep. Rep. Angie Craig joining Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett, Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva, Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton and Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley. Within the next 24 hours, I’d expect at least a half-dozen more House Democrats to add their names to the list and meanwhile, Virginia Sen. Mark Warner is reportedly trying to get a group of his fellow Senate Democrats to join him in calling for Biden to withdraw as candidate. The point made by Obama’s political guru David Axelrod — that the polls show a 16-point swing toward Trump, compared to four years ago — can only be ignored by Democrats if they’ve simply given up hope of beating Trump. Julian Castro sees it clearly:

“The overwhelming impression that I got from [Friday’s ABC interview] is that you have a president that is basically in denial, denial about the decline that people can clearly see. . . . Denial about the polling, about how far behind he is in the battleground states.”

The problem for Democrats like Castro and Axelrod who see the writing on the wall is that they and their friends in the media have spent the past four years telling their voters that Joe Biden is the only one who can save them from Donald Trump, and the mindless mob of Democratic voters believe whatever they’re told. So if the Democrats dump Biden now, they will alienate many millions of their own voters. The fact that none of the likely replacements for Biden — Harris, Newsom, Whitmer, “Big Mike,” etc. — is likely to beat Trump in November means that dumping Biden won’t really help and may, in the long run, hurt the Democratic Party.

“Oh, what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practice to deceive.”
