Ironically, though both Pittsburgh and I wanted to play our last series hands-on, the Dynasty League computers had other ideas, and we logged in Thursday night to find the games had already been played. I dasn’t complain too loudly; while we lost the opening game 4-3 when Dave Sells coughed up three runs in the bottom of the ninth to blow the save and the game, we rallied behind Pat Dobson to win Game Two 5-4 thanks to a two-run Nate Colbert dinger in the 8th, and then in Game Three got to Lindy McDaniel for three runs in the top of the 11th…and that was the ballgame as Blue Moon Odom came in to shut the Pirates down in the bottom of the inning for his first save of the season.
So we missed the playoffs, finished 4th in the Beta Division and 7th overall in the AL (tied with the Hated Yankees) at 73-89, nineteen games behind Pete’s Brewers and four games ahead of the woeful Red Sox. If half of our hitters had lived up to their cards, we would have done a lot better; I’m still crunching the numbers, but it looks like our starting pitchers took a lot of tough losses because the guys that were supposed to be hitting the ball all around the park weren’t.
