Victor Davis Hanson has another excellent essay on the situation in Europe. Read the whole thing. But let us focus on the Germany/Greece dichotomy.

In other words, it is as illogical as it is common for the wayward debtor to blame the thrifty creditor for his dilemma. The Germans now are in the impossible situation of being told they did something wrong by doing things mostly right. They retire too late and caused others to retire too early; they saved too much money so others had to borrow too much; they built too many things that others wanted; they acted too much like parents and so made others too much like children.
Right now the continent’s psychological problem is not that southern Europeans cannot pay the northerners back, but that they are often arguing that they should not have to pay them, as if those who lent are more to blame than those who borrowed. The Germans rightly know that if they were just to write off the debt, such magnanimity would only lead to the same disaster in another five years, as the southern Mediterraneans cited such largess as proof that the Germans were guilty all along of mercantilism and therefore finally evened up with their moral betters. For Germans, this serial blackmail is of course an impossible situation. Would you wish to be lectured by your poorer brother-in-law on why he should not have to pay your $1,000 loan back, as he critiqued your oh-so-conventional workaholic habits?

We’ll just mooch Erick Erickson’s quick summary of the Texas situation:

David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz are in a runoff in Texas.
Cruz has long odds in the runoff, given the margin of Dewhurst’s victory.
But it is very doable. Conservatives across the country, however, must unite today. This race must be a national priority for each and every conservative. It is not enough to pray for Ted Cruz, though that helps tremendously.

Dewhurst led the field, but did not manage to avoid a July 31 runoff. He had about 45 percent of the vote and Cruz about 34 percent with 84 percent of the precincts counted, according to unofficial results on the Texas Secretary of State website.

I, for one, love to see the GOP establishment on notice that conservative support is not a given. The GOP has relatively less Progressive taint than the CommunistDemocrat party, but some days the enthusiasm is difficult to locate.

Maybe this is a deliberate chaser insult to follow the under-bus toss exemplified in canceling Theater Ballistic Missile efforts:

Two recent editorials from Heritage fellows have criticized the Obama administration for abandoning Eastern European allies. According to the editorials, Obama has given up proposed missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic (sometimes called the “third site”). They argue that this will will serve to embolden Russia and increase our vulnerability to Iran’s missile capabilities. The first problem with their arguments is that Obama has not yet abandoned the proposed missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic. In fact, after a report released in a Polish newspaper said that the sites had been abandoned, administration officials were quick to point out that all options were still on the table.

Yeah, Barack’s position is ‘evolving’.

. . .these were carefully scripted remarks by the president reading off a teleprompter. Six millions Poles died at the hands of Nazi Germany during World War Two, including three million Polish Jews during the Holocaust. The president’s use of the term “Polish death camp” is hugely insulting to the Polish people, and will reinforce the growing image across Eastern and Central Europe of an American presidency that cares little for key US allies, especially against the backdrop of its controversial and weak-kneed “reset” policy towards Russia. For a US administration that likes to boast of “smart power,” this was an act of staggering historical ignorance as well as crass insensitivity.

Via Insty, the White House attempts a ‘clown nose off‘**:

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said: “The president misspoke. He was referring to Nazi death camps in Poland. We regret this misstatement, which should not detract from the clear intention to honor Mr. Karski and those brave citizens who stood on the side of human dignity in the face of tyranny.”
Anxious to quell the controversy, the White House also noted that the president had visited the Warsaw Ghetto Memorial while in Poland and that he has repeatedly discussed the bravery of Poles during World War II.
The Polish Embassy in Washington, on its website, has a “how-to guide” on concentration camps that states that references to Polish death camps are “factually incorrect slurs” that should be corrected.

A picture of Stacy McCain beavering away on the blog surfaced today through means that remain obscure:

American Glob straight up plays the “They Told Me If I Voted. . .” card, and points to Munsey’s Technosnarl, with an eyewitness account of today’s court circushearing at Munsey’s Technosnarl.

But, Walker didn’t press the credibility of Kimberlin enough. He was too easily sidetracked by the latter’s machinations, and every time Walker veered off, the Judge got madder.

Wise Judge Vaughey says to keep a close watch out for bloggers whose names rhyme with Scarin’ Stalker. That’s just what the World’s Youngest blogger sets out to do, in his matchless disguise as a 10 month-old. Who would guess that these seemingly infantile hands can take on a rampaging camel?

And yet, watch Niklas do battle with a camel in this very clip:

This artifact is known as “The 100”. I had been in the basement all day, writing python code in a courier font. Mrs. Other Smitty and her sister had been shopping, and bought a small sign that said “Loo”, i.e. a British lavatory, to hang on the bathroom. Only they hung it on the camel’s neck. I looked at this thing and saw “lOO”, and asked “What’s the 100?” Some stuff you just don’t live down.
