Yesterday, everybody was talking about a poll so ludicrously positive for ObamaCare that even Allahpundit was skeptical. The irrationality of post-passage spin is the topic of my latest American Spectator column:

Seven months is a long time in politics. Seven months ago, in August 2009, Democrats still held the governorships of Virginia and New Jersey. Rep. Parker Griffith was still a Democrat, Rep. Eric Massa was still a member of Congress in good standing, and Sen. Evan Bayh hadn’t announced his retirement. Seven months ago, it had not yet been reported that unemployment had reached a 26-year high of 9.7 percent. Ted Kennedy was still alive and even those who knew that “the liberal lions of the Senate” was at death’s door had no inkling he would soon be replaced by a truck-driving Republican from Wrentham.
A lot of things have changed in seven months, but amid all the changes, ObamaCare has been reliably unpopular. In August 2009, 53 percent of likely voters surveyed by Rasmussen Reports opposed it, whereas 54 percent opposed it last week in the final Rasmussen survey before Nancy Pelosi rammed a “reconciliation” version of the bill through the House on a party-line vote.
Seven months and one week before Election Day, Democrats have begun declaring loudly that the one constant of the past seven months will change dramatically between now and Nov. 2. Unpopular as a legislative proposal, ObamaCare will be enthusiastically embraced by voters, we are assured by Democrats and their media friends, now that it is a fait accompli. . . .

    They have wanted this for soooooooo long, polls be damned, midterms be damned, 2012 be damned…becuase Obama and the Dems sure this will be super duper great. We need it. We want it. We will love it. They want to slap us because we are stupid, becuase we do not see the wisdom of loving them.

    They know better. And once we realize that we will let them take our guns, take our property to share with others, give them more money, and let them lead us because they are so wise and smart.

    And if we have a tantrum and oppose them, we will be corrected. Because they want us to love them.

    What you on the right didn’t seem to understand about all the polls is that when asked if they supported the HCR bill they didn’t because it was NOT LIBERAL ENOUGH. A good portion of the disapproval came from the left, not from people that would EVER vote for the teabagger type candidates. That basic misunderstanding of the polling data will now evaporate as most on the left will now support the bill.

    I wonder if the right will change their tune once we have a number of polls coming out with similar results. One of the big reasons the GOP was saying this was a bad bill was because the “people” were against it. All of those comments and complaints are going to look very silly in a few months. The GOP has painted themselves in a corner and I’m loving every f**king minute. (kudos to the VP)

    They’ve been howling, “But I WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANT it!” for 60-plus years, and by Gaia they were going to force it through one way or another.

    It’s gone beyond mere spanking.

    Proud Liberal, I know you think this will go away, but it won’t. the fact of the matter is this: Only 20% of the country views itself as hardcore liberal according to the latest Rassmussen and Gallup polls on the subject. The rest are either moderate or conservative (which is up to 40%). Yes, many on the left did not like the bill because it didn’t go far enough, but they were HARDLY the majority. Before the bill was passed it was at a two thirds margin that people were disapproving of this bill. Just because it is now law doesn’t mean people will magically support it, especially when the rationing and taxes kick in in six months.

    The Constitutional Crusader I don’t believe the 20% self identify as hardcore liberals but merely liberals. I’d wager that the liberals in Govt are more radical than ordinary every day liberals. As for the people learning to love our new installment of slavery, we’ll see in Nov. In addition to haveing consequences elections are also educational, although attempting to educate Social Democrats is, I suspect, a fool’s errand.
