Fireworks in AL-5 GOP Candidate Forum; What Was Mo Brooks Trying to Say?

Posted on | April 13, 2010 | 40 Comments

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Candidates in the three-way GOP primary in Alabama’s 5th District traded sharp jabs Monday night in a candidate forum at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, with ex-Democrat Rep. Parker Griffith trying to establish his conservative bona fides against Mo Brooks and Les Phillip.

At one point, Griffith offered a “unity” pledge that he asked the other candidates to sign. As Challen Stephens of the Huntsville Times reports this morning, he got no takers:

“Can I it read first?” replied Madison businessman Les Phillip to a round of applause and laughter from a packed auditorium of about 400. As Phillip read the document aloud, a few audience members yelled out: “Don’t sign that,” and “sleep on it.”

Several people on Twitter asked me afterwards how I thought Les Phillip did in the debate. My basic answer was that he did not lose. Phillip is a first-time candidate up against two experienced politicians, and this was the first GOP forum since Griffith switched parties. Insofar as there were any objective metrics, according to a count made by Alabama political operative Stephen Gordon, Les got more applause lines than any other candidate, and after the forum, Les was surrounded by more audience members.

It’s hard for me to be objective about Les — honestly, he had me at “hello” — and if I were asked to criticize his performance, I’d say he seemed too cautious, in sort of a “prevent defense” mode. Yet he got in some witty lines and, as actors say, he “hit his marks,” outlining his conservative positions on all the issues, and made no major gaffes.

Mo Brooks evidently came into the forum with a strategy of attacking Griffith, which he did repeatedly. In one of the strangest exchanges of the night, Brooks said “politics makes strange bedfellows” in reference to his willingness to work with Democrats like Nancy Pelosi on legislation of importance to the 5th District, which has a large military and aerospace industry dependent on federal spending. Griffith replied by joking, “I’m having a hard time imagining Mo and Nancy Pelosi in the same bed, what about y’all?”

Brooks responded, “I noticed that my wife just walked out. And I think it’s unfortunate that that kind of barb, even in jest, could be made. My wife and I, we’ve been faithful to each other for 34 years. You may not have noticed it, but I was looking at her.”

Brooks’s response shocked me because, the way he said it, he seemed to be insinuating something about Griffith’s own marital fidelity. I immediately called Gordon out of the room and asked him if Brooks was alluding to some known scandal: Had Griffith ever been divorced or anything like that? Gordon knew of no such scandal, nor even any rumor to that effect, so maybe I misunderstood.

Still, the tone of Brooks’s remark struck me as odd. He had been the one to introduce the “strange bedfellows” metaphor, and Griffith’s joke was to the effect that a less-than-metaphorical meaning would be unthinkable. So why did Brooks get angry? I recorded the debate, and shared the audio with Huntsville talk-radio host Ladd Ehlinger Jr., who has a clip of the exchange where you can hear some audience members groan with dismay.

This kind of personal stuff in a Republican primary is unfortunate, but local residents here tell me that there’s been all kinds of craziness behind the scenes, mostly ignored by the mainstream press. Several different whisper campaigns seem to be afoot, including misunderstanding of Les Phillip’s position on public-housing issues and accusations that supporters of Brooks’ opponents have sought to make an issue of Brooks’ Mormon faith, reminiscent of the problems Mitt Romney had with Southern evangelical voters in the 2008 presidential primaries.

It’s hard to tell if any of this will matter in the primary result, or whether the Republican infighting will have any impact on the GOP nominee’s fortunes in the general election. Given the current political climate, whoever wins the Republican nomination in AL-5 will be overwhelmingly favored to win Nov. 2.

UPDATE: A few photos from my Huntsville visit:

Has anybody question Parker Griffith regrading his campaign manager, Ceci, who is a lobbist and Mr. Ceci’s relationship with Cantrell who was sent to jail for kickbacks on Gov’t contracts?

I was in attendance last night and have to agree with you that Phillip did not lose the debate last night. I actually thought Griffith did a good job until Phillip asked him about his comments about the Constitution and healthcare being like toothpaste out of a tube. He seemed to start pandering from that point on.

Brooks was snarly and snippy all night like an old chihuahua. Phillip took him to task over his employment tax on all foreign workers.

The whole thing with Brooks and his wife almost seemed pre-planned. Like she was supposed to make an exit anytime Griffith said anything remotely offensive to her.

Can’t wait for the next two debates. Maybe someone will televise one.

Justin, I don’t know anything about those things. I know Griffith’s Democratic staff resigned en masse when he switched parties, but haven’t followed the ins and outs. There seem to be 1,001 rumors in AL-5, and I expect they will remain rumors unless (a) candidates try to make public issues of them, or (b) the local newspapers decide to get into that stuff.

Myself, I hate to see campaigns turn into “gotcha” stuff — scandals and accusations and so forth. But that’s usually the way the game is played, it seems.

Robert, I agree that political season is “silly season” and rumors abound.
This one should be easy to fleash out with a couple simple questions:
    1. Does Joey Ceci (the lobbist and Griffith’s campaign manager) know Mike Cantrell (former Gov’t bureaucrat and convicted kickbacks)? If yes,
    2. What was Mr. Joey Ceci’s relationship with Mr. Mike Cantrell?

Do you think these are fair questions or gotchas?

I was very disapointed in Les’ ability to speak. He seemed to stumble over his answers and several times I was left wondering what he was trying to say. I was also disappointed in that I’d heard he was a fiery individual, but hte only time he got heated was when he completely misunderstood Mo Brooks’ stance on the hiring of legal and illegal immigrants.

Griffith lied repeatedly and used numerous conservative buzzwords all while turning the brightest shade of red possible with every attack.

I wish Les (who initially stated he was running for office because Griffith was a bad congressman) had stuck to his guns when asked about the unity pledge.

Mo Brooks was clearly the best spoken and most knowledgable candidate there.

Jack hate to disappoint you NO ONE misunderstood Morris’s stance on Illegal vs Legal Aliens. He has made it quite clear-on his FB, in multiple RECORDED speeches. He wants to TAX any business that hires an Alien-legal or NOT which is not American. I suggest that you research Morris’s platform of support for the EPA, Dept of Ed, IRS, etc (all those unConstitutional agencies), his stance on immigration-adding additional expenses to businesses that are not violating any law is ignorant. Further you might ask him about his belief that the Constitution is a living document, his comment on FilmLadd.com (also recorded so he can’t waffle or weasel) that the government does have a role & responsibility in healthcare. Morris is nothing but a big government, big spending Republican. Research your facts, I know many of his supporters have actually bragged that they don’t do research, I believe that. Oh & by the way, where do you think all that pork money morris spends comes from? I promise you it is not manna from heaven, it is tax dollars from Madison County.

Les Phillip wants everyone to have mandatory extreme health care insurance. It’s very funny that he calls Mo’s plan to rid us of illegal immigrants a tax on business (by forcing companies who employ non-citizens to pay for their health care rather than making the gov do it through the ER) while he wants to ‘tax’ EVERYONE with mandatory health care insurance. Isn’t he supposed to be the constitutional scholar? Is mandatory health insurance constitutional?

    Victoria… where to start?

    A) It’s not a tax. It’s a requirement for those business to provide health care for alien workers and to pay for any legals problems they have. If the companies do not do it, the taxpayers do.

    B) A living document is any document that can be revised or ammended. The U.S. Constitution is certainly one of those. If the U.S. Constitution was not a living document, neither women nor blacks could vote. One of the U.S. Constitutions biggest pros is that it IS living.

    C) Pork is spending my tax money on me? Do you even do research? He spent all his discretionary funds on schools. How is that pork? It’s not like he can give it back without full County Commission backing.

    D) Les Phillip is on tape saying the government should enforce mandatory health care. I have a copy of it if you’d like to hear it.

    E) Les Phillip is on tape saying he wants to get rid of the DoE (including the TVA). Is he retarded?

    F) I have a twitter post of yours asking for Obama’s execution: http://twitter.com/victoria_29/status/9637283047

Jack another alias I presume, personally I think you have proved a point perfectly, Morris supporters spend all their time making personal attacks & name calling. Guess that goes along perfect with Morris wanting to get in bed with Pelosi. Please produce since you want to make accusations of Les Phillip paying me. Please PROVE it. Since it is a lie you can not do so. Unlike you I NEVER say anything that I do not have documentation for.

First off Morris is on RECORD-radio interview, on his FB, multiple meeting, etc. Saying that he wants to TAX BUSINESSES THAT HIRE NON-AMERICANS. Look it up…or is that beyond your ability?

NO when you say the Constitution is a living document you are not saying that it can be AMENDED. That is not what is meant it is the progressive way of saying it means different things at different times depending how you choose to interpret it. And that is not the case the US Constitution says what it says period.

LOL Do you really think that me saying I believe that Obama has committed treason & should be TRIED for it & executed (since that is what the Constitution says is the penalty for treason is) is a big deal. Wake up!! A large number of Americans feel the same way. Most Americans that love their country recognize that when you give away military secrets, place the lives of American service personnel in danger & weaken American defense…well hon sorry that is treason. It is quite obvious that you are as weak on National Security as Morris is (& yes hon I have emails from him I will be more than happy to make public showing this, but before you get too froggy about wanting me to do so you better ask Morris). I also have emails from him about the Constitution & his belief that SCOTUS interpretation is to be followed even if they decided to take away 2nd Amendment rights. Want me to make those public too? Be very careful hon, before you challenge me, I would check with Morris if he wants those posted online. I have nothing to hide & will gladly post them, I am not running for office in a conservative, gun loving region.

Second you lied about Les’s position on healthcare period. He is against any government interference with healthcare. He has never stated that anyone should have mandatory insurance, what he said & this has been said multiple times as well as in writing “That also means those that are capable of buying at least catastrophic coverage and choose not to should file a form, with their respective state, to waive the right to care paid for by taxpayers and doctors” That does not sound like mandatory insurance to me sounds like to me that I can buy it if I want or I can choose not to but then I alone accept responsibility. And yes I want to hear the tape that you claim to have….bet you won’t meet me & produce it.

Do you believe that money fell from the sky? Where do you think the money came from? And yes I can tell you exactly where it came from, how much came from each tax, how it is divided, etc. And please do not call the lady in the county commissioner’s office a liar, I am not posting her name in a public forum but will be very happy to sit down & share her information with you. But please tell me when a boat dock became part of a school? And were all those schools in his district? Did all the schools in his district receive equal “pork”?
Would it have not been better to not spend the money? Or maybe you can explain increasing rates & reducing services..guess that is great logic & success too.

Since you are obviously Constitutionally limited yes a lot of people that tend to like the Constitution believe that we need to get back to it. And that includes doing away with agencies that are not Constitutional. In the Constitution certain authority like national security is given the federal govt along with roads but MOST is reserved for the states. The Dept of Education is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, as is the EPA (which Morris also supports). Guess you have a problem with the Constitution, not surprising.

Another thing you might want to look at is that the last 2 times that Morris has run for an office that he had to win votes outside of his county commissioner district-he lost…what 19% of the vote.. If you look at his last quarter report…2 donations I think but we’ll give him 3 outside of Madison County. Does that sound like someone that can win a general election?

Sorry Victoria, I don’t speak “progressive” I use definitions. By definition a “living” document is one that can be changed. An amendment is a change. Nice ranting and raving.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_document

The “large number of Americans” you mention who think Obama is guilty of treason got arrested last month for planning to kill police officers in Michigan.

If you’d said the “large number of Americans who think he’s done a terrible job as POTUS” then I’d have to agree.

The Constitution specifically names SCOTUS as its interpreter. Are you against the Constitution? Or do you only follow it when expedient?

I wouldn’t trust anything you showed me from an email as you are obviously crazy and emails can be edited. Video/audio or nothing.

I have a recording of Les Phillip saying he would require companies to cover catastrophic health coverage for their employees. If anyone wants to hear it please post an email address along with a request and I will send it to you. I will not meet with you Victoria because you are crazy.

The boat dock was for Ditto Landing. I’m sorry… 70% of it went to schools. Some also went to roads and some went to a park (Ditto Landing). Yes, all the schools were in his district. No they did not all get the same. They shouldn’t. They have different student populations.

By “increased rates and reduced services” I’m guessing you’re talking about a $3.50 raise in garbage collection rates. The first raise in over 10 years and far under the % increase in gasoline. No, you’re right. I expect prices to never go up. Inflation isn’t real. /sarcasm off.

I agree that the DoEducation is unconstitutional. The EPA is far more of a National Security issue than NASA. Maybe you don’t remember rivers catching fire or the people in Triana getting poisoned from toxic dumping? Now, do I think it should be as big as it is? No, but the question was is it needed and Constitutional? If NASA is, it is. Your move.

Last time I checked nobody knows who Les Phillip is. He cannot even win the primary, much less the general. If you look back at that election you mentioned, you’d see that even though Mo Brooks lost statewide, he actually WON AL 05. But the facts don’t support your arguement so you ignore them.

If you want to help Les win (and I think you do) then you should stop your online smear campaign. I have not met a single person who has read any of your posts who was not turned off by them. You have single handedly lost Les Phillip more potential supporters than anything Mo Brooks/Parker Griffith could have done.

You’re right. Jack is an alias. Because it’s my name.

Sorry Victoria, I don’t speak “progressive” I use definitions. By definition a “living” document is one that can be changed. An amendment is a change. Nice ranting and raving.

The “large number of Americans” you mention who think Obama is guilty of treason got arrested last month for planning to kill police officers in Michigan.

If you’d said the “large number of Americans who think he’s done a terrible job as POTUS” then I’d have to agree.
