NRA Endorses John McCain, Prompts Outrage Among Membership

Posted on | June 10, 2010 | 69 Comments

Barbara Espinosa is furious at the NRA sell-out:

Yesterday we posted the endorsements U.S. Senate candidate J. D. Hayworth received from former NRA President Bob Corbin and from the Gun Owners of America. Yet the NRA, which has previously referred to John McCain as “one of the premier flag carriers for the enemies of the second amendment,” inexplicably gave McCain their endorsement.
In endorsing Hayworth, the Gun Owners of America (GOA) said: “John McCain has gone out of his way to earn the ire of conservatives and gun owners in his 20-plus years as a U.S. Senator from Arizona.”
Watch this GOA ad exposing John McCain’s efforts to constrain our First and Second Amendment Rights. Then read what GOA’s Political Victory Fund says about McCain here.
This indefensible approval is akin to the shameful endorsement of McCain by Arizona Right to Life (AZRTL) which resulted in members of the board and PAC leaving the organization and calling the endorsement of McCain an “egregious affront.” . . .

Read the whole thing at American Freedom.

Hayworth is weak in the general. He might win, but he might not. McCain will win the general. I know you like him, but I would prefer Arizona stay R/R.

If the NRA “sold out” at least it wasn’t for lobbyist cash like Hayworth, eh?

Seriously, would YOU buy a used earmark from JD?

On the one hand, the NRA is America’s largest, oldest “gun control” lobbying group.

On the other hand, even if they were pro-gun-rights, they’d be in a tough position here. McCain isn’t especially pro-gun, but Hayworth is crazy as a shithouse rat.

Maybe they’d have been better off not to endorse at all.

John McCain is the white whale of RINO hunting.

I care not if he was running against Animal from the Muppets show, we need to take him out (of office). This will send yet another message to our RNC, NSCC, and NRCC that you’re globalizing borrow and spend, illegal campaign finance law – making ways are what the American people detest.

It’s definitely 1994 all over again. The last time I saw cr@p like this from the NRA was back then, and at the time it made me just a touch regretful of having already paid for my life membership.

Now, not so much. I seem to have noticed in the intervening years that most of the threats to gun rights have shriveled like Arlen Specter’s … political career, and when was the last time we heard from Sarah Brady anyway?

As noted by KG, the NRA is a single-issue organization, and should never be confused with a “conservative” group.

Stacy, John McCain is definitely flawed but he is not the problem with the GOP (certainly not now). If Hayworth can win the nomination and the general fine. But Hayworth has his baggage too. He could not hold his own congressional seat, which does not bode well for a state wide election. He has had a few questionable issues of his own that hurt him. I am for Hayworth if he can win. I suspect this erosion of support is due to people in Arizona realizing he will not prevail in the primary (so they are backing who they think will be the winner).

I agree we have to change things, but to do that we need to get the majorities back in House and Senate.

Quit the NRA (be sure to tell them why) and join the Gun Owners of America. And to piss off the Jew-Hating Libs and Storm Front types (peas in a pod if you ask me), join the Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership.

Both those organizations beat the NRA hands down.

Why McCain is getting more support…

McCain is beating Hayworth in the primaries. He beats the Dems by 20 points in the general. Hayworth could win the general, but the margin is far less.

I am not happy with things John McCain has done. He has been a crapweasel in the past. But of all the problems the GOP is facing, John McCain is currently not one of them.

If Rossi is the nominee, Murray is at serious risk in Washington. Getting rid of that idiot is almost as good as getting rid of Reid in Nevada.

I guess The Battered Wife should have turned old Mac Daddy in. Then he would have lost his firearm privileges for life under those draconian bullshit Lautenberg amendments.

I hate finance reform too. Although the Gang of 14 turned out to be better for the GOP in the long run than many ever gave Mac credit for.

While all of you make good points about Meghan’s Dad, Knapp is right about Hayworth. Looks like the NRA is playing it safe wanting to back whoever wins. Rather wimpish on the NRA’s part. If Hayworth can truly win, fine, but it looks like he will not be able to do it.

“Hayworth is crazy as a shit-house rat.”
So what maybe a few lunatics is what we’re looking for. This notion of picking the lesser conservative because they may be more electable is not the way to go. The policy of regaining the majority at any cost may cost us dearly. While with enough attention and diligence we may mitigate a certain level of squishiness this will be particularly difficult with members of the Senate. There is no good substitute for electing principled conservatives.
