That Was No Love Affair, That Was Your Misplaced Narcissism

Bryan Safi, at HuffPo:

After a brief love affair with metrosexualism, the pendulum of American culture has shifted back to the straight side.

Dude, you are R. O. N. N. G. G.

The new ethos seems to be. . . Bring back the real guys and smear those queers.

The queers, now, as ever, deserve to be ignored. Why denigrate one’s manhood by smearing such?

And how about the Ultimate Old Spice commercial?

Masculinity, Safi: if you’re lacking, do a search on “Tea Party” in your area, and attend the next protest against this decadent Congress and Administration. You’ll find a surfeit thereof.

For some reason that column reminded me of the brief ad campaign in which teenagers snarking among themselves are interrupted by a random prominent gay activist who chides them for using “gay” as a non-specific pejorative. It being a scripted mini-play of course, the ad ends with the teens suitably remorseful of their thoughtless behavior.

In the real world, of course, the encounter would simply have set off a renewed round of snarking.

The only thing more remarkable than how quickly the ads disappeared, was the fact they were aired at all. If anyone with even passing acquaintance with teen behavior had been asked, that would never have happened.
