Ann Coulter to WND: ‘I Speak at Harvard and I Certainly Don’t Endorse Their Views’

Posted on | August 18, 2010 | 53 Comments

The news that Ann Coulter would headline next month’s “Homocon,” a conference of gay Republicans in New York, has caused her to be dropped as a speaker at WorldNetDaily’s “Take Back America” conference:

“Ultimately, as a matter of principle, it would not make sense for us to have Ann speak to a conference about ‘taking America back’ when she clearly does not recognize that the ideals to be espoused there simply do not include the radical and very ‘unconservative’ agenda represented by GOProud,” said [WND publisher Joseph] Farah. “The drift of the conservative movement to a brand of materialistic libertarianism is one of the main reasons we planned this conference from the beginning.”
Asked by Farah why she was speaking to GOProud, Coulter said: “They hired me to give a speech, so I’m giving a speech. I do it all the time.” . . .
Coulter responded: “That’s silly, I speak to a lot of groups and do not endorse them. I speak at Harvard and I certainly don’t endorse their views. . . . The main thing I do is speak on college campuses, which is about the equivalent of speaking at an al-Qaida conference. I’m sure I agree with GOProud more than I do with at least half of my college audiences. But in any event, giving a speech is not an endorsement of every position held by the people I’m speaking to. I was going to speak for you guys, I think you’re nuts on the birther thing (though I like you otherwise!).”

Staunch conservative John Hawkins of Right Wing News has signed on as a Homocon sponsor, so turning this into a litmus test in a “More Conservative Than Thou” game is ridiculous.

UPDATE: I explore this dispute in more depth at The American Spectator.

Camel’s Nose Under The Tent: Get Ann Coulter and John Hawkins to speak at/sponsor an event for Homosexuals.

John Hawkins is now a Pimp for Homosexuals, and Anne Coulter gets to be the woman that Winston Churchill told,”Madam, we’ve already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.”

Every speaker lined up at the WND affair should cancel unless Coulter is re-invited.

WTF?!? Do you say the same thing about Ann when she speaks at Harvard?

There is a distinction to be made: I suspect that when Ann Coulter speaks at Harvard, she hasn’t been hired by the university, but by a conservative student group there, which uses her speech to raise awareness of the group and energize the group’s membership. Coulter might not be endorsing Harvard, but isn’t there an implicit endorsement of the group that invited her to speak?

Farah has been exhibiting symptoms of OCD for a good while now. Even when I agree with his position on the issues, he quite often starts grating on me with his approach.

There’s a difference between having principles and being fanatic. It’s hard to have much confidence in the fanatics, even the ones on our side of the fence, because one just cannot be sure what they are going to decide to go bat-crap crazy over.

It’s usually safe to predict that it’ll be something that really isn’t an issue in the first place, though.

As a paleo conservative and a Catholic, I have always had considerable disdain for self-proclaimed “Christian right” who have from time to time tried to hijack the GOP.

I wish them well with their faith, but I don’t need to be clubbed over the head with it.

What is it with someone else’s homosexuality that gets these people so upset?

In addition to proscribing homosexuality, the Bible says that masturbation is morally wrong and there is even a specific commandment forbidding us to commit adultery.

But, we seldom see the stadium preachers and televangelists of the Christian right admonishing us about masturbation and adultery to an even remote extent to which they make their own (not God’s, which is His business) persecution of homosexuals.

Even in the last election cycle, John Hagy, the 400 lb preacher from Texas (I believe) who endorsed John McCain, called the Catholic Church “the great whore”.

When pressed on his outrageous accusation, he explained that he meant “the great whore” in the kindest possible way (not really, he just said he sure didn’t mean what he said).

If the people to whom Ann Coulter are speaking are in favor of governmental fiscal responsibility, interpreting the Constitution in accordance with the intent of its drafters, and standing up for the Bill of Rights, they are clearly people I want on our side.

What part of the Bible says that we shouldn’t speak to homosexuals?

I would think that Farah would want to augment his base of political believers, but it he wants to narrow that base he has made a good start.

“If the people to whom Ann Coulter are speaking are in favor of governmental fiscal responsibility, interpreting the Constitution in accordance with the intent of its drafters, and standing up for the Bill of Rights, they are clearly people I want on our side.”

One can have varying views about homosexuality and the gay rights movement while still looking at a group like this and deciding that they are far more the allies of conservatives than enemies. And boycotting speakers who would address such a group is ridiculous.

I’m a pretty conservative guy both economically and socially, but we gave the fundamentalists the key to the bus during the Bush years, and they drove it into the ditch, to the lasting damage of the conservative brand.

If saying that makes me a “materialistic libertarian” then so be it.

To MolonLabe28: I don’t recall reading that there’s an Association of Conservative Adulterers demanding spousal benefits for the Other Woman and an end to the military ban on adultery. Or a Right Hand League, demanding the right to marry their Fleshlights.

It’s fine for conservatives to welcome as allies those who will stand with them in support of conservative issues. But that’s different from conservatives lending their name and credibility to promote an organization that has among its principal goals radical social change.

    @Michael Bates, #14:

I’m as capable of being a Social Conservative as anyone on the planet is. I belong to a Missionary Baptist Church. We’re the folks who think that the SBC is too liberal, on religious matters.

I don’t “approve” of homosexuality. But there are a whole lot of other things that I equally don’t approve of, either. My Bible says that there are no better or worse levels of sin.

Be that as it may, however. My beliefs also tell me that there is no way that any Human Government is perfectible. We are not going to elect anyone who is going to install The Lord’s Kingdom here on earth. We get that one when Jesus comes back.

In the meantime, we have to go with what we can do, and having the .Gov leave me alone and let me find my own way in this world is the best I can hope for.

I’ll accept any allies who want the same thing. As far as their personal lives? It’s their handbasket, and they can go wherever they want to go in it. While I don’t have to approve of or condone their lifestyle, I don’t see anywhere in my copies of the Scripture that it says I’m supposed to pass laws against them. I may preach to them, and I’ll pray for them, surely. But in the Political arena, if they want to be on the same side I am, they are welcome to be.

A Government that can oppress them can equally oppress me. We’ll discuss the social issues once we have the important ones (Socialism, debt, foreign policy, and so on) taken care of. We have bigger fish to fry right now.

Religion is for my eternal life. Politics is just for this one. If I can’t keep the two areas separated, I’ll give up on politics.

GOProud wants to use government power to force all Americans to honor sham “same-sex marriages” as if they were real marriages. If they get their way, employers, landlords, and other businesses wouldn’t be allowed to give benefits or provide services for real married couples without also providing them to “gay married couples.” There’s nothing conservative about that cause.
