A 31-Year-Old Drifter

Because Colorado is serious about punishing crime:

The bodies of an Ohio woman, her young son and a family friend have been discovered by police, wrapped in garbage bags and stuffed in a hollow tree, authorities said today.
Knox County Sheriff David Barber said they were told where to find the victims by lawyers for Matthew Hoffman, who is in custody for kidnapping 13-year-old Sarah Maynard.
The victims included Sarah’s mother Tina Herrmann, 32, her younger brother Kody Maynard, 10, and family friend Stephanie Sprang, 41. . . .
The bodies were found near Apple Valley, Ohio, miles away from Hoffman’s home where Sarah was found on Sunday by a SWAT team. The girl was bound and gagged in Hoffman’s basement in rural Mount Vernon, Ohio. . . .
Hoffman is a 31-year-old drifter who had recently been released from a Colorado prison after serving a term for arson and burglary . . .

Let me see if I catch your point here. Some people commit crimes (in this case arson and burglary), get caught, are tried, are sent to prison, serve there term, are released and then go on to commit other crimes.

I am not sure I catch your point here. Perhaps the point is “Beware of drifters”? Or perchance “Beware Colorado – it’s in the water”?

Reading the entire article gives me the distinct impression this dude was nuttier than a fruitcake.

Why wasn’t he in an insane asylum?

Was he released so he could vote Democrat, as so many others have been?

Up until March of this year, I lived in Mt Vernon, Ohio. Foundation Park, where people were searching, is about 8 blocks south of where I lived. From my understanding, he moved into a home on Columbus Road, across the river (which is more of a creek) from Foundation Park.

When I was in high school, I used to run past Kenyon College, where they found her vehicle, on a regular basis. That’s in Gambier, Ohio. She lived near King Beach in Apple Valley, a beach I visited on several occasions.

Mount Vernon (population today approx 15,000, population 1970 approx 15,000) just doesn’t have crimes like this. Throughout my 44 years living there, the joke was if you saw 3 police cruisers in one place, there weren’t any cruisers anywhere else.

This hits much too close to home for me, even though I now live about 1200 miles away. My family and my ex still live there.

Here in Michigan, this person would have been considered a “non-violent offender” and eligible not just for parole, but early release….. fubar.
