Romney Booster Jen Rubin Getting Worried About ‘Mormon Mitt’ Meme?

Resisting the urge to call this “Ain’t I Done Told Ya So? Part IV,” we find Rubin horribly flustered that McKay Coppins wrote this:

Ann Romney was already fully immersed in stay-at-home motherhood — raising five sons, ages six to 16, in her Belmont home — when Mormon prophet Ezra Taft Benson took to a pulpit on February 22, 1987 and delivered a definitive sermon on gender roles in the church titled, “To the Mothers of Zion.”

Rubin notices that Coppins is doing the “media Mormon expert” gig and accurately recognizes the insinuation that the LDS ”creed has ominous political implications” – just like I done told ya! — but other than abhor the insinuation, what can you do?

Jen, seriously: Have you bothered to investigate the history, beliefs and practices of LDS? Because there is a metric buttload of this stuff just laying around out there, and those tolerant and enlightened liberals in the press corps are gonna unload it all.

Do you really think they’ll stint to use the dirtiest tricks in the book? Remember how your liberal friends learned to sling around “neocon” as an epithet (nudge, nudge) during the Bush years?

Whatever you do, don’t say nobody warned you.

UPDATE II: Alec MacGillis at The New Republic shows that there’s no winning this game with liberals. In an article that dismisses concerns about anti-Mormon bias as “crying wolf,” MacGillis manages to squeeze in a jab at Romney’s “secrecy-minded religion”:

Ann Romney’s own parents were barred from attending the Mormon service for her wedding.

So, if you see an article that strikes you as gratuitously raising Romney’s religion as an issue, and complain about it, your complaint will then be used as an excuse to write more articles making gratuitous reference to Romney’s religion.

Heads liberals win, tails Romney loses.

UPDATE III: Full text of Ezra Taft Benson’s 1987 sermon, “To the Mothers in Zion,” which cites Brigham Young as an authority. So ask yourself, “What do liberal journalists know about Brigham Young? Is he the kind of guy liberals would endorse and praise as an authority on ‘family values’?”

    Whatever the Mormons may have peddled as snake oil in the 19th century, they make good neighbors toda y.  That puts them a notch above Muslims and Democrats

    Mitt on the other hand, I’m not sure is such a good neighbor.

    The sooner all this stuff gets out the better for Romney. If he treats this the same way he did that minor tax kerfuffle it just gets worse.
    Given that the Winston Smith Media will misinterpret and misstate what’s out there it could present an opportunity.

    Well, Jon Krakauer’s “Under the Banner of Heaven” seems to be shooting up the Sales charts at Amazon.  But that can only be a good thing, right. 

    And fortunately, Obama’s campaign won’t mention anything about Mitt’s faith.   Obama may even come out and say it’s wrong to associate Romney the candidate with the teachings of the Mormon church even though Mitt has donated many millions of dollars to help support the LDS church.  Romney also donated fifty bucks to Planned Parenthood, and that proves he’s a good guy at heart.  So we’re good there, at least.

    And anyway, if we learned anything from 2008, it’s that someone’s religion is off-limits for discussion.  Well, at least it was off limits when was Obama’s religion.  I’m sure the MSM and all of Obama’s surrogates will play by the same rules for Romney.

    Well…at least one good thing will come out of this whole election season: by the end of it, we’ll know who are all the dead weight on the Right.  Let’s see: so far Ann Coulter, Erick Erickson, Jennifer Rubin….

    Nope…Obama is a Christian…..Mormons say that they are (but do people really believe them?).

    Mormons are simply a nice people with a bizarre religion (well…as bizarre as any other…but the others you can’t disprove due to a few thousand years of history).

    I agree, Mitt has to take this stuff head on.  And let’s lay off “I told you so” about LDS.  That plays into the Democrats’ hands.  Your problems with Mitt should be about Mitt, not his LDS faith.

    And therein lays the problem Mittens only knows how to wage war on conservatives and he’s pretty good at it (food for thought there)  he doesn’t know how to wage war on Bolshevism. These people are going to be smearing nine ways to Sunday the faith that his family has held to for generations. Doesn’t this piss him off? Can he not stand for anything? 

    The right way to handle this would for his small but rabid band of supporters get on the airways and blogs and scream in outrage at these despicable racist (Mormonism is a mainly white religion) attacks on the man’s faith. Shriek WITCH HUNT. Trouble is Romney doesn’t have supporters like that, his supporters are far too “pragmatic” to cover his left flank.

    Hey, I was barred as a Protestant from taking communion at my own sister’s Catholic wedding. Just because Democrats will try to use the Mormon line of attack doesn’t mean that it will work.

    EBL: My point is (a) we were told that Romney was “electable,” and (b) Santorum’s victories in the South were discounted by the media as irrelevant because those voters were supposedly prejudiced against Mormons.

    OK, so now Romney’s the nominee and suddenly we find the liberal media sniffing around the Mormon stuff — just as I predicted — because they know (and have always known) that it’s potential dynamite.

    I understand Romney was not your choice for the Candidate for 2012 but to jump to the Left’s side on the religion issue is just wrong. Don’t like Mitt, stay home, vote for Obama. Did you hold everything that every Pope said against Santorum? How about the Inquisition? Romney 2012

    Mitt has done nothing but compliment Barry, saying he’s just ‘in over his head’.  Like so many others [especially his highly-paid consultants], Willard is afraid of being labeled a raaaaacist! and, therefore, caves at the slightest charge of it being thrown at him by the Left.

    Regarding your last sentence: at least when Adjoran uses it, he has a sensible [or semi-sensible] argument to back his assertion up.
