Steady There, Erick

Posted on | August 8, 2012 | 95 Comments

Mitt Romney’s spokeswoman Andrea Saul said something phenomenally stupid on TV today, inspiring Erick Erickson to pronounce doom on the entire Romney campaign.

Needless to say, this strikes me as a bit premature. Grant that such a tactical blunder is not encouraging. Factor in the Romney campaign’s generally standoffish attitude toward much of the conservative movement, including the fact that lots of conservative bloggers are getting jerked around on their requests for Tampa convention credentials.

Still, we’re three months away from Election Day, and there are yet reasons for optimism. If Romney picks Paul Ryan as his VP, it would go a long way toward restoring confidence.

Let’s wait and see what happens going forward.

Has Romney been campaigning for local Republicans, regardless of their loyalty to the US of A or their wallets?

Or has the RNC determined that coat-tails are racist, homophobic, and likely to lead to leprosy?

If Massachusetts wants to have RomneyCare, why shouldn’t it have it? And if any other state wants to have RomneyCare, why shouldn’t it have it too.

It’s the leap that every state should have Obamacare whether it wants it or not that is problematic.

I do not see him saying that exactly, he is saying he is not trusting Romney and frankly that is justified.  This “spokesperson” needs to be shut up and Romney better get back on message.

Romney now really really needs Paul Ryan.

Massachusetts can do what it wants.  I totally agree.  I support State’s rights.  Frankly, I always thought Romney should say that and then point out why Obamacare is bad in ramming it down the throats of the American people.  I think what Massachusetts has is a mistake, but then again there are a lot of things I disagree with Massachusetts about.

For me it’s the prior leap that RomneyCare was a good idea, a leap made by Romney and never repudiated by him despite the results, that’s problematic.

If Romney were not the nominee for president I wouldn’t care that he thought RomneyCare was a good idea, any more than I care now that Gov. Blowdry of East Necrota thinks BlowdryCare is a good idea for East Necrota.

Federalism can allow a lot, but it doesn’t require me to accept the originator of a profoundly bad idea as the next savior of these United God-love-’em States of America.

Choosing Ryan as his VP running mate will not restore much of anything. Ryan is simply the best of a bad set of choices. Dubya was a poor choice in 2000, but he at least had a VP that had a slate of accomplishments in life that helped paper over the stench Dubya brought up from Texas. I don’t see Ryan really helping much at all.

Yes, it’s perfectly fine for states to pass socialist initiatives like Romneycare or bullet trains to Fresno. But just because Jerry Brown has the right to turn California into Greece doesn’t mean I want him as the next president.

That said, Ericson (and Rush earlier on his show) are right that the Romney campaign doesn’t know how to make a conservative argument or even push back against the totalitarian-in-chief.

I fully expect Romney to continue to be a mealy mouthed RINO. He’ll be light years ahead of Obama as a competent president. It then again, Jimmy Carter wold also meet that threshold.

By selecting Ryan, Romney removes the leading conservative budget guru in the House, leaving Boehner and Jerry Lewis without adult supervision.

As the Veep, Ryan has no traction with the Senate, even a GOP-led Senate.

In the House, Ryan can continue to push a conservative budget program.

Fully agree. Either pick a conservative ex governor, an exec like Cain, or someone who won’t be worried about running for POTUS in 2016 (like Fred Thompson).

My exception to the rule of not picking from the Congressional roster would be West. He has POTUS in 2016 written all over him.

I really don’t know if he’s a “nice guy” or not. But he’s tough, is military, conservative, and a rhetorical master.

So if he is “nice” then he at least shares one attribute with Romney.

I am betting Romney will go with TePaw or Thad McCotter because John Huntsman was just too flashy…

I have no doubt that Romney could beat Obama if he set his mind on it.  The problem is, I’m not sure he has set his mind on it.  So many missed opportunities so far.

You just can’t fix “stupid” and the elite, establishment GOP is stupid.  Guess I’ll be voting Constitution Party again this year.

Misleading? How? It appears to simply attack Ayn Rand for being an enemy of religion and malign by association anyone who ever thought she was a good writer. hehe  After all, Milton Friedman was a “dirty Jew”. I guess that somehow means that Christians must reject freedom as a matter of principle…or something.

  38. big4bluz

Aside from the issues Romney is a terrible political candidate. It’s easy to see why he’s only ever won one election.

You didn’t write anything that required comprehension. It portrayed accurately glowing praise for Ayn Rand. There is a greater point to be made and I actually tried to help you along, but as you wrote…comprehension.

Hold your nose WarEagle and vote AGAINST Obama. Once this totalitarian has been dispatched then we can begin reforming the GOP. Romney has a white knight personality so if he has a strong conservative Congress behind him he’ll fare alright.

I’ll vote for him even if he picks Portman or Pawlenty because Romney needs to win. If he does go with a moderate as a running mate, the worst that will happen is that it will confirm what everyone already knows, that Mitt is a political coward who likes to play it safe. I wish this weren’t the case but my guy got smeared early on and had to drop out so I’m left with the last man standing. I’m a bit of a purist myself but not enough to let Obama turn the US into his own private Gulag.

Dude, Rick Perry is a Democrat.

He is a liberal.  Texas is a red state.  As such, it was politically expedient for him to ride George W. Bush’s coattails.

Reading all your comments to the other commenters here, I think we are all on the same side. We just have a disagreement on whether Romney will represent us or will we be fighting his brand of statism. Me, personally would like to call him a good president in four years and give him four more. But if we are fighting him constantly from the right ……. I would rather not have to say “I told you so.”

  49. Garym

  50. Beeblebrocs

Maybe so but Romney can’t debate his way out of a wet paper bag. Just heard an interview of him done by Hugh Hewitt this evening where Hugh threw him softball after softball in the hopes that Mitt would at least try to hit a homer. But alas, Romney was so slow on the uptake that Hugh finally gave up.
