SHOCKING: Libyan Mob Attack Kills Four, Including U.S. Ambassador
UPDATE: ‘Full-Blown … Crisis’
UPDATE: Hey, MSM, No Fair Shouting Questions at President Gutsy Call

Posted on | September 12, 2012 | 58 Comments

Just woke up to this news. When I went to bed last night, I knew that one American had been killed in the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. But when I woke up — wow. This is stunning.

UPDATE: Washington Post:

U.S. Ambassador to Libya John Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed Tuesday in an assault on the American consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, the White House said.
In a statement issued by the White House early Wednesday morning, President Obama said he had directed an increase in security at U.S. diplomatic posts around the world. CNN reported that the Defense Department has dispatched two Marine anti-terrorism security teams to Benghazi to reinforce security there.
Stevens and the others were fleeing the consulate when a rocket-propelled grenade struck their vehicle, news reports from Benghazi said.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton identified one of the dead as Sean Smith, a Foreign Service information management officer. The names of the other two people killed were being withheld pending notification of their families.

UPDATE II: Remember that yesterday, immediately after the attacks on our embassies in Egypt and Libya, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued an apology, which the White House then retracted, and as Allahpundit said:

Really looking forward to hearing Carney explain which part of the embassy’s earlier statement failed to represent the views of the U.S. government. I want to hear it in his own words; hopefully the press corps will make him elaborate.

This administration’s absurd policy deserves to be mocked, and often, and by someone who knows how:

UPDATE III: Toby Harnden of London Daily Mail:

The Obama administration is engulfed in a full-blown foreign policy crisis just two months before the presidential election with the two campaigns trading angry accusations over events in Libya, Egypt and Israel.
Footage of the body of Christopher Stevens, United States ambassador to Libya, slung over the back of a protester, was reminiscent of the 1993 ‘Black Hawk Down’ incident in Somalia in 1993 when militia fighters lynched American aircrew in the streets of Mogadishu.
President Barack Obama’s staff will also be mindful that a shadow was cast over Jimmy Carter’s presidency by the Iranian hostage crisis after the US embassy in Tehran was stormed by Islamist extremists following the Iranian revolution.

Read the whole thing.

UPDATE IV: The Lonely Conservative:

Obama Using the Carter Model
of Strength Through Confused Weakness

UPDATE V: On Twitter, David Limbaugh called this “unbelieveable”:

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland cautioned reporters not to assume that the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Cairo today reflected growing anti-American sentiment among the Egyptian people.
In response to a reporter’s comment that “it does seem as if there is a growing anti-American sentiment in Cairo,” Nuland said, “I would urge you not to draw too many conclusions because we’ve also had some very positive developments in our relationship with Egypt.”
Protesters scaled the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and tore down and desecrated the American flag, replacing it with a flag bearing the Islamic inscription, “There is no god but Allah.”

As anyone who has studied this problem knows, our State Department’s Mideast section is crammed full of alumni of elite schools where the foreign policy curriculum is based on the works of Edward Said and other anti-American academics.

Jugears kept trying to distinguish his term from other Presidents. He has now tied it, indelibly so, to the Carter term.

My anger knows no bounds, therefore, at this time I think it prudent not to comment for fear I’ll say something in the throes of that anger that will cause the Secret Service to have me for ‘a little talk’.

And, alas, I expect more dead. Obama can only screw this up, even more than it is now.

For thousands of years a principle among civilized nations has been that ambassadors are inviolate, and that to attack them or fail to protect them is equivalent to an act of war. Yet this morning we were treated to, among other insults to our intelligence, the sage Peggy Noonan criticizing Romney for having strongly expressed himself on this attack.

Our Secretary of State, not surprisingly, has responded with an assurance that we won’t hold this minor affair against Libya and its government.

Our official policy seems to be a hope that the criminals next door come to realize we bear them no dislike, and thereby learn to love us. But if we wish for respect we had better start by teaching them to fear us. Romney, while never my favorite, seems to have a better idea of this than Obama.

Walter Russell Mead writes that the Libyan crisis “came out of the blue” and “The Middle East mess calls President Obama’s policy of engagement with democratic forces in the region (much more similar to his predecessor’s approach than either President Obama or anybody else is willing to acknowledge) into question.”

Because we all remember BushBUSHBUUUUUSH!!!! having the Muslim Brotherhood over to tea and slipping them a few bucks.

Our current MidEast crisis is, once again, a crisis entirely of Obama’s making, for which he and his supporters will accept no responsibility, and for which innocent Americans have paid the price.

Hillary’s reiteration of the apology I think has done her great harm for any political chances in the future.

Not by itself but a overall judging of her term as Sec State that has not been filled with victories and opening opportunities is not a positive one.

Her term has mostly been filled with gaffes, apologies and condemnation of the only democracy in the ME.

She’s even managed to make things with Russia worse.

“Remember that yesterday, immediately after the attacks on our embassies in Egypt and Libya, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued an apology, which the White House then retracted,”

The apology by the embassy was BEFORE the attacks, not in response to them but to the protests. Order of events matters in real journalism.

Out of the blue my ass. This is who we put in power. These are the terrorists our tax dollars and military were sent to aid. This is what we should have expected and you can bet our intelligence was relaying the violence and unrest back to both Obama and Clinton who should have already fortified security at the embassy, not waited until lives were lost. This is an act of war and it’s heating up in other countries. The only thing more disgraceful than the attack has been Obama’s response.
