S.C. Primary: Will Tea Party Rally Behind Curtis Bostic Against Mark Sanford?

Posted on | March 20, 2013 | 58 Comments

Family values: Curtis Bostic with his wife and five children

Dana Loesch this morning expressed disappointment that disgraced former Gov. Mark Sanford finished first in the South Carolina GOP congressional special-election primary. But it’s a runoff state, and Sanford only got 37 percent of the vote, while former Charleston City Councilman Curtis Bostic was second with 13 percent in the 16-candidate field. There are only two weeks until the April 1 runoff and, as National Review‘s Jim Geraghty notes, the Republican establishment seems to be lining up behind Sanford, so . . .

What about Curtis Bostic? His campaign page is StopSpending.com — a basic Tea Party theme — and it seems entirely possible that the grassroots, tired of the corrupt GOP establishment’s old-boy style of politics, could rally behind Bostic.

Reading his biography page, he’s a Marine veteran of Operation Desert Storm and the father of five home-schooled children. So there’s your pro-military and pro-family “street cred.”

Two weeks isn’t a lot of time. This is a very safe Republican district — Stephen Colbert’s sister won the Democrat primary, but she’ll get stomped in the May 7 special election to fill the seat vacated by Tim Scott’s promotion to the Senate. It’s a free shot, in other words: Torpedo the establishment pick — the guy who claimed he was “hiking the Appalachian Trail” while cavorting in Buenos Aires with his Argentine mistress — and elect a strong (but unknown) conservative candidate.

Here’s the link to contribute to Curtis Bostic’s campaign. How many small donations — $25, $50, $100 — will Curtis Bostic get this week?

The RNC ignores blogs, but I see here an opportunity to remind them that the Army of Davids can still make a difference. What do you say?

CURTIS BOSTIC for CONGRESS

Bostic has a good record, but so does Sandford and Sandford had eight years as Governor in which he did great things for South Carolina.

It would be great if Bostic took the runoff election, but I don’t see it happening.

Look: When you jump into an underdog situation like this, you don’t calculate the odds. You understand going in that it’s a long shot, so you go all-in and ignore the negative, focusing instead on the potential upside: “What will the headlines say if we win?”
    UPSET! CINDERELLA STORY!
    GRASSROOTS DEFEAT ESTABLISHMENT!

Do you remember how it felt that morning in October 2009 when Dee Dee Scozzafava dropped out of the NY-23 race? Do you remember how it felt when the confetti came down at Scott Brown’s January 2010 victory party?
If you’ve ever seen that kind of magic happen, you never doubt that it’s possible to accomplish the seemingly impossible.

I would love to see that headline, but Sandford was a very popular Governor and has a tremendous leg up on Bostic. You’d think people would remember Sanford’s little lie and infidelity, but unfortunately, the voters have a short memory.

Bostic was no spending hawk on Charleston County Council. You outsiders should learn more about the candidates you discover at 8:00 a.m. and endorse at 8:05 a.m.

Bostic will be closer to Henry Brown than to Tim Scott. And give Brown the edge over Bostic for conservative record, too. Sanford is still the reformer in the race.

Although I support Costic for the sake of South Carolina not becoming a complete joke in their upcoming election, let us not remember the horrific Doffman-Owens-Scozzafava race. Sure, we got DeDe out… But four years later and the idiot Owens is still in.

Well, Mr. “Shoe Leather Journalist,” perhaps you can explain to us why more than half of all Bostic’s reported donations come from members of one family – from Kentucky?

Because I KNOW any responsible journalist would have researched the guy before jumping on his bandwagon, right?

Not true. The only tax increase while Curtis was on County Council was the half cent sales tax that the people voted on and he voted against.

The SC GOP establishment hated Sanford. He spent so much time line-item vetoing all their pork barrel deals and old-boy style politics that they couldn’t stand him. I still remember the time he brought two live pigs to the SC House lobby to complain about some spending he was vetoing.

People are lining up behind him now because he’s won repeatedly and he’s well known. But Establishment? Anyone who thinks that is just an outsider who doesn’t know South Carolina.

Just so. Unfortunately, our state has a weak Governor under our Constitution, so his ability to rein in the pork and cronyism and corruption, like Nikki Haley’s, was quite limited. But he kept the spotlight on the legislature, which they hated and still hate.

But the carpetbagging self-declared “Tea Party activists” will support the Establishment’s favored candidate. When I was part of the early TP, it was a grassroots movement against spending, bailouts, cronyism, and corruption and for reform, not some Morality Police Unit ready to stamp out reform efforts.

Nonetheless, we should stand aside and listen to the great Dana Loesch and Stacy McCain because of all the great Tea Party reformers they have helped to elect in Missouri and Maryland, right? Oh, no, wait . . .

There was nothing wrong with supporting Hoffman. The harm was caused by idiotic New York GOP officials and Newt Gingrich acting like a fool. The dems took advantaged of a divided base. The outcome was heartbreaking but the lesson is worth remembering.

The biggest lesson: Never vote in lying crapweasels like Dede Scozzafava as Republicans (who went on to endorse the democrat). The same is true with Mike Castle in Delaware.

While I understand Rove and Preibus’ clever strategy in presuming Sanford’s infidelity and fornication are a powerful draw to Democrats who think Slick Willy and dirty Bob “Short Eyes” Menendez are just ginchy, I remember hearing in the comments following the SC primary that South Carolina has an enormous population of bitterly divorced women, enough to do down Newt Gingrich. So, on that basis, sure I’ll slip Curtis some beer’n’bail money.

Yeah, Dana & Stacy are two of my favorites, but I’m afraid on this one they’re projecting a little and are all wet. Sanford, clearly, is a sinner in his personal life who has addressed his infedility about as much as one could expect without turning into a complete blubbering fool. On his commitment to Tea Party principles on limited government & spending, though, he is a proven star with a record as governor of effectively walking the talk. I think penance is a great thing and am glad he was forced to resign his governorship. But I’ve got no desire to banish for life that rare bird of a principled, effective, true limited government conservative not afraid of our party’s squishes.

It goes beyond character and morality to judgment and common sense. Sanford ain’t got ’em. The man lied to his staff about his location and traveled thousands of miles away from his responsibilities on an insane extramarital affair.

The best way to address his infidelity is to stay out of public life. The man simply has no shame.

I’m a left coaster so SC is about as far away as you can get from me and still be in the USA. But I watched Sandford from afar, and I saw what looked like a pretty good tea party conservative. That’s why the mistress and the whole “hiking the Appalachia Trail” lie was so hard to take. And why it was so damaging to the brand too.

That said, Sandford is toast as a Republican With A Future. This is one measly house seat. Maybe he’ll win it back, but even if he does it’s hard to feature him ever winning a higher office on the federal level. Maybe a SC Senate seat someday, but that’d be it.

Adjoran, yes Sanford was an outsider and a non establishment candidate…who went on to have a bizarre and pathetic mid life crisis for all of us to witness. I am sorry that makes him damaged goods, but that makes him damaged goods.

I do not know enough about these South Carolina candidates to know their full histories and what I have seen of South Carolina politics makes me wonder what is in the water there, but a lot of us are thinking “Please, anyone but Sanford!”

  42. Wombat_socho

I wouldn’t go that far. He’s been around here for too long to fall into that category, I think. He’s just making the common mistake of thinking everybody knows what he does, and anybody who doesn’t is lazy/an idiot.

I am from out of state but am watching this election with great interest. I find it a bit unsettling to think the people of SC would vote in a man to represent them that used THEIR MONEY to fund his adulterous liaisons. Where is the fiancée? Why is she not front and center? Talk about foreign interest whispering into the ear of your candidate, this is the epitome. If this is his soulmate it should give you a very good look into his soul. A.W.Tozer said, “The excellence of steel is strength, the excellence of art is beauty and the excellence of man is moral character.” Do you want excellence, SC? Your choice should be crystal clear!

Give Sanford a break, you would have to know his ex-wife before understanding the whole situation. Bostic could lose to the DRat who is pretty accomplished and has a lot of support.

  46. richard mcenroe
    March 21st, 2013 @ 3:04 pm

I’m talking dereliction of duty here, WS. What would have happened if there had been a major disaster or terrorist event or other crisis while Sanford was doing the lateral mambo on the Planalto or wherever and his staff had no idea where he was? I mean, damn, even with Obama they knew WHICH golf course he was goofing off on.

Profumo in the UK screwed up his career similarly. IMO he more than redeemed himself in later life doing good works. But no one suggested ever returning him to public office.

  47. RichFader
    March 21st, 2013 @ 3:05 pm

Yeah, Sanford has a great record: Longest distance out of the country to bone his girlfriend while leaving his staff to lie to his wife, his family and the public about it. That’s Guinness-worthy. The book, not the beer.

  48. richard mcenroe
    March 21st, 2013 @ 3:05 pm

Hmmm…your reply makes it seem like I’m defending Sandford’s infidelity and lies to his wife and staff. I don’t defend him on those grounds. My point was that as Governor for two terms, Sandford did good things for the state and a lot of voters will remember that over his other peccadilloes. I just think Sandford will probably win on his political record.
