The #Ebola Media Epidemic

It was probably only a matter of time before CNN producers figured out that Ebola is cable-news ratings gold. Today I was babysitting my infant grandson and, on a whim, turned the TV to CNN and left it there all day, while they were wall-to-wall with URGENT BREAKING EBOLA UPDATES the way they do with a major news story — a school shooting, a missing Malaysian commercial jet or a Republican congressman talking about rape and abortion.
You get the idea, really, of a symbiosis between the media and the administration. Personally, I’m not panicked over Ebola, nor do I care to interpret the problem through the warped lens of a political blame game. But the White House and the Democrat-Media Complex? They’re sweating like a whore in church. Ace of Spades nails it cold:
Meanwhile, you know this is now officially serious, because President Golf n’ Fundraise has cancelled planned fundraisers in NJ and Connecticut to actually trouble himself to pretend to do his job for a day.
He’ll be having some briefings on ebola. Not a minute too soon, either.
Just the right time for briefings on ebola.
Any sooner? Premature, and signs of irrational panic.
OMFG. Ebola symptoms are now declared "asymptomatic" for purposes of public reassurance.
— iLoveScienceSexually (@AceofSpadesHQ) October 15, 2014
This Glib Reassurance Machine acknowledges she did have a fever, and then declares her symptoms to be asymptomatic.

MinHealth Announcement: Citizens, Rejoice! Average body temperature has been recalibrated as 99.5. If you're feeling warm, you're healthy!
— iLoveScienceSexually (@AceofSpadesHQ) October 15, 2014
You see, it’s always politics first with this administration. Everything is about polls and perceptions and — given that the Democrat Party just hit a historic low in terms of their popularity rating, three weeks before Election Day — the Competence Test Tag-Team of Ebola and ISIS have inspired . . . Well, DEFCON ONE: “We must look like we know what we’re doing and are busy as hell doing it!”
Relax. The government has determined that this is not a public health problem. It's a public relations problem. @AceofSpadesHQ

Next: Obama will declare #Ebola a "junior varsity" virus.
— Robert Stacy McCain (@rsmccain) October 15, 2014
Sunday: Susan Rice will go on five network talk shows to explain that #Ebola was caused by a YouTube video.

After the election, administration official will testify to Congress about #Ebola deaths: "What difference, at this point, does it make?"
— Robert Stacy McCain (@rsmccain) October 15, 2014
@AceofSpadesHQ @rsmccain If you could defeat #Ebola with bullshit nonsense, this administration would've had it licked on day one.

If you ever wondered what Jimmy Carter's second term would have looked like … #ISIS #Ebola #Obama
— Robert Stacy McCain (@rsmccain) October 15, 2014
Please excuse my sarcasm. I’m not laughing at Ebola, I’m laughing at halfwits who think the most important thing about this deadly virus is its potential impact on the Democrat Party. Also, sarcasm is the only sane reaction to the Left’s “Ebola Racism” meme.

The fact that a liberal hack like Joan Walsh can type the words “cynical turnout strategy” without melting like the Gestapo guy in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is a testimony to her pure, all-encompassing evil.

While I’m not overly worried about being exposed to Ebola when I get my morning coffee, I would note that the response to this and the EV-D68 virus are indicative of bureaucratic lethargy coupled with political correctness. With the latter, it was/is more important to seed illegal alien children all over the place than protect our borders, thereby trying to shore up the Hispanic vote. With the the former, it’s an administration with no one at the helm. It’s not particularly comforting.

[…] The #Ebola Media Epidemic. Ace of Spades and RS McCain nail it. This administration doesn’t care how many people die of Ebola…just how it effects people’s perception of the administration “doing something.” […]

Stacy, just shot you a serious e-mail. Are these guys legit?
October 15th, 2014 @ 5:58 pm
But we started the paperwork…what else do you want from us?
October 15th, 2014 @ 6:27 pm
There is a great old episode of the Simpsons where Milhouse finds a passed out monkey in a basket from Pier 1 Imports that turns out to be infected. Good times. Good times.
October 15th, 2014 @ 6:33 pm
Can you blame CNN for this? Their ratings will soar higher than an Ebola fever spike.
But who did the first Ebola Rule 5?
October 15th, 2014 @ 6:42 pm
I’m told that the Ebola costume is the viral hit this Halloween.

October 15th, 2014 @ 6:53 pm
Hmmm. If I’ve been caring for somebody who just died of ebola, and now I’ve got a fever, should I assume I have strep throat?

R.S. McCain and Ace of Spades: 2 men who have truly elevated pithy comments, distilled down to 140 characters or less, into an art form which I call “Tweetcraft.”

I’m sure you meant CNN rating sores. CNN and soar does not compute.

The sarcasm was high on that comment. BTW, the bitch contest going on right now between Anderson Cooper and Piers Morgan (really it is just a one sided Piers event) is a Schadenfreude fest.

Unless you catch Ebola or EV-D68, or die.

Now renowned scientist Amanda Marcotte has been allowed space in USA Today to tell everybody to calm down, it’s just Republican fear-mongering:

You’re aiming too low. If you really want to oppress efficiently, you need to uphold the oikonormative kyriarchy.
October 15th, 2014 @ 8:35 pm
I ran across a rumor (and I really stress rumor) that the immigration policies that allowed ebola and EV-D68 into the country MAY have been deliberate attempts to provoke a public health crisis so that people will stop opposing Obamacare and demand that The Government Do Something.
Ordinarily I would dismiss it as dross, but this administration has lied about so many things so consistently, how would we know?
October 15th, 2014 @ 8:38 pm
I don’t care either but am really enjoying the spreading of fear on the internets, I have heard that the dem base is terrified of this disease if I can help feed that fear my job will have been done. I understand from some idiot in the dem party that you never let a good crisis go to waste.

The dread Bangèd Beast herself!
October 15th, 2014 @ 9:07 pm
I write with absolutely no hyperbole that political correctness is killing us. Political correctness dictates that it is more important to protect the economies of and try to help save as many of the people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone than protect us. They tell us that our best defense against Ebola here is to halt the outbreak in West Africa rather than canceling all flights, and visas issued to citizens and people passing through those countries. They also claim that if we halted air travel from the infected countries the people there would just walk or drive to a neighboring country and then catch a flight here. This is absolute nonsense, all of the nations surrounding the infected 3 have instituted travel bans, The Cape Verde Islands “prohibited the entry of all North Americans and non-resident foreigners
who had visited the US in the past 30 days.” A travel ban to this country should have been implemented as soon as the reports of the two American doctors hit the news. As it stands right now the only people who’ve been infected with Ebola in this country got it from the Liberian Duncan. There are only four hospitals capable of dealing with this disease and the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas ain’t one of them.
Given who’s in charge of dealing with this in this country I’d put the chances at an explosive out break here at 25%. If that happens we’ll be hunting government officials with dogs.

She’s not the one that’s scared of coffee and elevators, and she’s not the one that damsels to object to damseling tropes. Where do I know her from?

I hasten to add: Educate yourself, lest you be denounced by the Commentariat here for insufficient revolutionary zeal and gross ideological impurity!

That’s kind of sad. Nothing really stands out. So Amanda Marcotte is just famous for being famous, like the Paris Hilton of female chauvinist grifters?

Who know that a degree in Comparative Vaginal Grievance provided the expertise necessary to comment on communicable diseases.

They also claim that if we halted air travel from the infected countries the people there would just walk or drive to a neighboring country and then catch a flight here.
An obviously specious argument. The fact that it is so obviously specious demonstrates what this administration thinks of its constituents. Very, very scary.
October 15th, 2014 @ 9:49 pm
Didn’t the Africans self quarantine themselves back in the day before the money hungry NGO’s and pantywaist liberal claims that we needed to do something for the poor Africans?

Paris Hilton doesn’t suffer from the “pretense of knowledge”, also she doesn’t write that she doesn’t wear underwear in a NYT column.

Paris Hilton was more from the “show, don’t tell” camp. 😉

October 16th, 2014 @ 12:06 am
Some African nations are doing it now.
October 16th, 2014 @ 12:25 am
It could be worse, if CNN ever finds out that that Malaysian Airliner went down because of Ebola then they will never shut up.
October 16th, 2014 @ 12:48 am
I keep seeing a lot of Rand Paul supporters/followers (maybe a few libertarians, whatever) who keep trying to diminish both the ISIS mess and the ebola breakout. It’s totally wierd. Both of them are diseases that kill most of the people who come in contact with it. But for some reason they have been trying to maintain that this is sort of like the SARS scare a few years back.
The irony about that was the CDC and Prominent Democrats were constantly getting the media to tell us all how bad SARS was going to be. Remember that it even got made fun of on South Park?
And now these same Prominent Democrats, media types, and the CDC are trying to tell us ebola is no big deal. Not sure why Libertarians (I don’t mean to imply all Libertarians) are down with that.
This ebola stuff is *not* SARS. It kills most of the people who get it. It’s damn contagious.
October 16th, 2014 @ 12:50 am
“The CDC acted stupidly”.
October 16th, 2014 @ 12:52 am
Uh oh.
I can totally see them trying that. Five years ago it would have been merely a distasteful joke. Now it’s something with a percentage of likelihood that is at least in the double digits.
October 16th, 2014 @ 12:53 am
Beer Summit!
Might suggest they tip a lil’ penicillin in the glass.
